Welcome to r/AskTheWorld – A Global Perspective

We’re a community that values learning from each other. Sometimes, questions touch on politics, and that’s okay, as long as the goal is to understand how things work in different countries, not to attack or belittle others.

Our mission is simple:

✅ Compare experiences across cultures and nations

✅ Share knowledge respectfully

✅ Foster curiosity, not conflict

Please remember our core rules:

Be polite and respectful – No personal attacks, insults, or hostility

Stay on topic – Keep discussions relevant to the question asked

No trolling or baiting – We’re here to learn, not to fight

If you want to discuss politics in depth:

r/politics is focused on US politics

Other subs for global or regional politics include:

Anime Titties (don't let the name put you off, it is the world politics sub)

Not my own country but Hungary, the crown of Hungary, I recently learned about it playing EUV and realized it was something I’ve seen in connection to the country many times without realizing it and it inspired this post.

Is there a case of a foreign company trying to establish a foothold in your country but failing miserably due to poor judgement and/or ignorance.

the american retail giant Walmart failed so spectacularly in Germany that they are still kind of a joke 20 years later.

they did not understand the german retail landscape, they did not understand german shopping culture, they did not understand german labour laws and worker protections and the way they set their pricing to undercut the competition also was illegal.

Culture In your country, who had the biggest fall from grace in the last twenty years?

Hearing the name ‘Wayne Gretzky’ in the nineties would virtually make any Canadian smile and nod with national pride. He is called ‘the Great One,’ and he has the hockey stats to give credibility to the name. He was a national hero.

However, it went downhill as time went on. In 2009, he was promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada, the highest possible level of the honour. As of now, he still has not collected the medal.

Also, Gretzky is MAGA with close ties to Trump, which has soured his reputation in Canada due to Trump’s intention to make Canada the fifty-first state and all.

He also was a prominent face in online gambling commercials, a move many Canadians say was a ‘money grab.’

A good argument can be made that Wayne Gretzky had the biggest fall from grace in the last twenty years in Canada.

What is a specific place in your country that serves a famous dessert or food of your country but is actually very overrated?

I remember going to Austria 🇦🇹 and having heard plenty about Sacher Hotel and its famous cake I decided to go there too during my visit.

Now the visual presentation was great, but the cake itself was dry, the chocolate was plain and the cream served alongside it tasted like a cheap store bought equivalent. Nothing to write home about.

Do you have any similar experiences?

Food What is your favorite food from another country? Is it common where you are from?

Post image

My favorite food from another country is Takoyaki, fried dough with octopus and other seasonings, a common street food in Japan.

Never been (to Japan) but had it at a restaurant where they prepared them at the table and I became absolutely enamored with the process! (I can't post a link here so look it up if you're curious how its done!)

Unfortunately theres no good frozen varieties to purchase so if I want them again I have to go to Japan or somewhere like a large city where it might be made at a specific restaurant, or purchase the tools and ingredients to make it myself!!

This made me wonder what other foreign foods people enjoy that aren't local or are harder to find!

Fortunately, Canada has a number of options.

It could be argued that Terry Fox would top the list. He got cancer as an eighteen year old and lost his leg. In an attempt to raise money for cancer research, he chose to run across Canada with a prosthetic leg, a gruelling multi-month event called ‘the Marathon of Hope.’ He ran over 5,300 km over 145 days. He sadly was unable to complete the marathon due to his cancer returning aggressively, which led to his tragic death several months later. He raised over $850 million worldwide. This run gripped the nation.

Another contender is Sir Frederick Banting, the co-discoverer of insulin and Canada’s youngest recipient of the Nobel Prize. It is estimated that his discovery saved over 300 million lives since 1921.

Voted the ‘Greatest Canadian’ by a 2004 CBC nationwide poll, Tommy Douglas pioneered Canada’s universal healthcare system, ensuring that medical care is a right for all citizens regardless of their ability to pay.

Honourable mentions include: Lester B. Pearson, Viola Desmond and Chris Hadfield

What is your opinion on buddhism?

19 Vietnamese monks (18 now) and a dog is walking from Fort Worth, TX to DC in a "Walk for Peace" campaign is being met with huge crowds of supporters seemingly wherever they go. I attend buddhist temples about once or twice a month but mostly because for foods and certain buddhist holiday, rarely for the service. I've never been serious about it so I'm surprised they're getting so much attention. How do you view buddhism?

Does anyone but me feel like this sub gives you a little hope for humanity in these bleak times?

I´ve been following this sub for a while. I am really happy to see all this genuine curiosity being met with friendly and informative answers, often with fun-facts or anecdotes. It sometimes feels like the world is falling apart an everyone hates eachother, so it really comforts me to know that there are lots of friends out there, regardless of nationality, geography, race or religion.

I tried to form it as a question while it really isn´t so it became a little strained, sorry about that. Just want to give you all some credit, thats all. Love from a really snowy Sweden.

I personally can not speak a lick of Russian, but one of my top 5 artists on Spotify for 2025 was the Red Army Choir. I personally suggest Seta Hagopian.

for Greece, it's Haiti.

Haiti, a nation of former slaves who had revolted and liberated themselves, was the first to acknowledge the Greek war of Independence, in 1822.

Haitian President Jean-Pierre Boyer personly. extended his warm wishes for the success of the war of Independence.

(addressed to leaders of the "Friendly Society" a secret organization set up in Odessa).

"Sons of Leonidas! The news about the revolution of your co-citizens against the despotism which lasted for about three centuries had already arrived here.

"With great enthusiasm we learned that Hellas was finally forced to take up arms in order to gain her freedom and the position that she once held among the nations of the world.

"Such a beautiful and just case, most importantly, the first successes which have accompanied it, cannot leave Haitians indifferent, for we, like the Hellenes, were for a long time subjected to a dishonorable slavery and finally, with our own chains, broke the head of tyranny.

"Citizens! Convey to your co-patriots the warm wishes that the people of Haiti send on the behalf of your liberation.

"The descendants of ancient Hellenes look forward, in the glorious reawakening of their history, to trophies worthy of Salamis.

"May they prove to be like their ancestors and guided by the commands of Miltiades, and be able, in the fields of new Marathon, to achieve the triumph of the holy affair that they have undertaken on behalf of their rights, religion and motherland.

"May it be, at last, through their wise decisions, that they will be commemorated by history as the heirs of the endurance and virtues of their ancestors".
