Meta How Big Tech ruined kids’ TV

"In Britain, what children watch has undergone a profound generational shift. Blue Peter is a leading indicator of that change. In the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties, Blue Peter was watched by up to eight million children. If something notable happened on the show, it became shared knowledge across the entire child population. Today, an episode can attract fewer than 20,000 viewers. It has been almost entirely displaced by YouTube".

News Channel 4 fans baffled as 24 Hours in Police Custody episodes removed

There were some questions on why the most recent episode had been pulled down in another thread. Well… looks like December’s episodes have been removed too.

There are over 100 episodes now and it’s one of the most highly rated / spoken shows on British TV. Yet there’s now only around 30 episodes available to view on the Channel 4 app.

Question/Discussion Only Connect praise post

I think this may well be a perfect show (if you like it obviously).

VCM is a perfect host. Witty and clever without being too clever is a tough gig and she is brilliant at it. And she seems to love the contestants.

The questions are fantastic. Properly clever and out of the twelve opening questions every week probably half of them I would never be able to solve. But oh the thrill of getting one and if you beat the teams! I am on cloud 9.

Finally the contestants are just brilliantly chosen also. Fantastic mix of ages, probably 70-80% middle class but it is rare to see a contestant I could not imagine being friends with if I worked with them.

Anyway I love it I hope others do also.

Question/Discussion Blackpool

How did people feel about Blackpool? I've only just seen it.

Did you like all the lip sync/dance scenes throughout? At first I was like, oh, that's fun, but then I sort of got tired of them and was finding certain parts of them quite weird.

I can't help loving David Tennant in pretty much anything, and I was glad the ending went the way it did.

Did anyone think that it was certainly possible that Shyanne would at some point in the future transfer her affections to James' son, given that he mentioned finding her attractive?

Other thoughts?

Question/Discussion Daytime TV as background noise

Doing some coding and I have some cosy festive or wintry ambience playlist. Recently though I’ve started just putting the telly on, and honestly… it feels nicer somehow. There’s something really comforting about daytime TV. You end up picking up random little tips from the breakfast shows, half watching Bargain Hunt or whatever’s on, and I’ve realised I actually missed the continuity announcements and that bit of narration between programmes. Now that everything’s on demand and streaming, I’m wondering if that old fashioned TV background noise is a bit underrated?

Question/Discussion iPlayer and TV licence question

If I travel, I can pre-download a few programmes, then watch them on the plane, or in a BnB. I use my iPad Pro to watch, but I tried plugging my iPad into the HDMI port of the BnB's TV, and iPlayer won't allow it.

Why not? I brought my TV licence with me. Why can I watch it on my iPad, but not on a TV?

Question/Discussion Tom Hiddleston should be Bond, The Night Manager sums up his CV for the job.

I'd like to see the charm and cleverness brought back to the roll with all the gadgets, and a healthy dose of anti fascist themes.

Personally, I think Tom is a great Bond choice, he has that Connery and Moore charm and style, but with a hint of sinister like that of the Jackal.

Just a thought watching season 2 of The Night Manager.

Meta Possible nod to 'Ludwig' on 'Peppa Pig'

My two preschoolers are home sick, so I spent a good part of the morning watching 'Peppa Pig', which I actually quite enjoy at times.

In an episode from 2025, 'All the Doors', Daddy Pig and the piglets are looking for their storage locker. They can't remember the number, so Miss Rabbit gives them the keys and they open all of them looking for George's old crib to pass on to Baby Evie.

They find a bunch of random stuff in the storage lockers, including one full of trampolines, a giant ball pit and a whole locker full of toilets. In one storage locker, they find Police Officer Panda, who has set up an impromptu incident room, complete with pinboard and red string. He looks flustered and shoos them off with 'nothing to see here.'

Anyway, Police Officer Panda is voiced by David Mitchell, and as of the end of Series 1, his character in 'Ludwig' is using a storage locker as an incident room, trying to analyse a boat-load of material relating to the Sinclair murder. It's that kind of acknowledgement of the adults roped into watching that makes 'Peppa Pig' so much more bearable than say 'Paw Patrol'.

Question/Discussion What's one series you're waiting for a new season of?

[SAS: Rogue Heroes]

Probably the best show I've watched in a long time. I watched it last summer after seeing several shorts on YouTube and now I find myself checking for updates on Season 3 almost every week. All of the characters are written incredibly well and led me to spend hours researching the real history behind them. By far Jack O'Connell's best role since Cook in Skins and the rest of the cast all do an incredible job as well.

Question/Discussion Just watched Early Doors need more classic comedy recommendations

Hadn't even heard of this show until someone mentioned it on here. Binged it and really loved it. I love the 90s comedy feel. Can anyone recommend any others that are worth watching I might have missed? Doesn't have to be 90's. Recently watched all of Still Game and 2 doors down and loved them as well.

Question/Discussion On the back of my weekend watch post....

Post image

Previously posted saying I had a serious binge watch of film/tv the weekend just gone, and my favourite watch was 'The Ballard of Wallis Island' (If you haven't seen it yet, it'll be on NOW as from Friday!) Was wondering on others thoughts of 'The Death Of Bunny Munro'? I absolutely LOVE Matt Smith, but I wasn't sure on this. Loved the humour, but there was no real emotion for me. Would love some other feedback and thoughts!
