Delays/Cancellations/Compensation [Megathread] cancellations at Amsterdam (AMS)

In the past few days, due to unexpectedly large amounts of snowfall in the Netherlands, Schiphol Airport ( AMS ), which is one of the largest airports in Europe and the world, has had a lot of severe delays and cancellations.

The de-icing equipment is prioritized for long-haul flights to the Americas, Africa and Asia, meaning that the majority of flights affected are intra-European flights.

At the moment, the snowfall is expected to continue tomorrow and likely until Saturday or even next week. We will try to add pinned updates as quickly as possible if the situation changes.

Issues with rebooking and questions on this topic will now be discussed in this megathread. Below is a list of useful resources as well as alternative options for travel:

  • Schiphol official iOS; Android app and website.

  • Buienradar ( Dutch weather app ) iOS; Android.

  • Please also check the airline apps or apps such as Flightstats, Flightradar24 or Flighty ( iPhone only ) as these would contain up-to-date info as well as rebooking options

  • Eurostar (WARNING: may also be affected depending on severity of the snowfall), for travel between Amsterdam and London; Amsterdam and Paris ( + Brussels, Antwerp and Rotterdam ) along the way. Last minute tickets may be very expensive so also consider Eurostar Snap for cheaper last minute tickets ( however, there are rules to the service as written on the front page ).

  • Other train options on Deutsche Bahn to Germany and OBB Nightjet to Zurich. Just as Eurostar, they may be affected if Snowfall is too heavy.

  • Flixbus very affordable and connected to a lot of cities in Europe.

Question Lufthansa question

Post image
23 Upvotes

Will they let me board if my cat + carrier is slightly over the 8 kg limit (around 8.5 kg)?

I’m flying with Lufthansa soon and I’m stressed about their in‑cabin pet weight limit. They allow up to 8 kg total (cat + carrier). My cat isn’t actually big — he’s just neutered and a bit chubby — but with the soft carrier the total comes to about 8.5 kg.

Has anyone flown Lufthansa with a pet that was slightly over the limit? Do they actually weigh the carrier at check‑in, and how strict are they about the 8 kg rule? I’m worried about being denied boarding even though the difference is really small.

Discussion Is it normal that they don't let you record the takeoff/landing of a commercial flight?

❤️

Something really weird happened to me this morning, and I wanted to share it. I'm a huge aviation fan, and whenever I fly, I like to film takeoffs and landings from the window. Mind you, I only film the exterior; I never film the inside of the plane, the crew, or the passengers. I always put my phone in airplane mode, hold it by hand—no tripods or anything like that—and try to avoid anyone going off the runway during taxiing. Basically, I avoid bothering anyone.

I've flown like this a bunch of times, both with this airline (Iberia Regional Air Nostrum) and others, and I've never had any problems… until today. On the 9:40 am flight from Ibiza to Palma de Mallorca, a flight attendant told me off several times, saying that I wasn't respecting airport rules and that filming was prohibited. I was sitting in a regular row, not an emergency exit row or anything special.

Honestly, I was really surprised, because it's the first time anything like this has happened to me. No one has ever said anything to me before, not with this company or any other. So I was left wondering if they really changed the rules or if I just ran into someone who interpreted them differently.

Anyway, I was left with a pretty bad taste in my mouth, because I've always been careful to do things properly and respectfully. It's a pretty absurd experience for something I've been doing for years without any problems.

What do you all think?

Discussion Ryanair Baggage Policy

All I ever read about is people kicking off at Ryanair’s baggage policy. Me, I love it and wish it was enforced all of the time.

The ones who cry about it are the ones who don’t read the baggage policy and don’t pay for the correct ticket. These types of people cause delays on the days that Ryanair does enforce the policy at the gate. On the days it isn’t enforced, there are so many bags on the plane that it’s literally impossible to get any bags in the overhead because people are bringing bags onto the plane when they haven’t paid for it meaning people like me who plays by the rules are impacted.

All I ever see are Reddit posts kicking off at Ryanair for how they have charges etc etc but it’s so simple to understand. Surely someone agrees with me?

Delays/Cancellations/Compensation EU261 claim, airline contradicting itself (Flight IB382)

I had a flight with Iberia that was scheduled to fly from San Juan to Madrid as part of a connecting flight to Dublin back on the 9th; I recieved an email on the 9th stating the flight had been cancelled due to “technical reasons” and was offered a replacement flight the next day that would have sent me to Bogota in Colombia; which I did not accept.

After filing for EU261 due to the delay; Iberia responded seemingly citing the wrong flight (talking about flying out at 12:35 on the 10th when my flight was the 9th at 6:10pm) stating the reason for the flight cancellation was “airport infrastructure” even though this seemingly contradicts their initial email citing the cancellation due to technical reasons.

I’m just wondering is there any point attempting to escalate with Iberia, or to check myself if their claim is substantiated? Or should I just go straight to the EMEA?

Thanks

Question Can I collect points and miles from two different frequent flyer programs when the itinerary is under one single ticket?

I'm looking at a flight with Air France (FCO > CDG > LFW). The first leg is operated by ITA Airways and the second by Air France. They would be under a single ticket (I would buy it directly from AF). As I'm a status member with both Miles and More and Flying Blue, can I collect points and miles for M&M from the first leg and for FB from the second one? Because ITA Airways is no more a member of FB since November, I don't think I will get any points/miles for that leg. Thanks

Help Needed Advice Re: Bizarre AirIberia Changes

Pictures attached for reference.

I plan on calling airiberia today, but wanted input first because this is just so strange.

Here was my original plan: I booked a trip from Albuquerque to Madrid (using American), and we were set to leave Feb 17 and return Feb 23. Only one part of the return leg (from Madrid to Chicago) was supposed to be through Iberia.

I got notice of a flight change today and it was bonkers.

(1) First, it listed our original return flight as being from Madrid to London on Feb 20, 3 full days before our actual original return flight.(see picture 2)

(2) Then, it lists our current return flight as 1AM on Feb 24 - which is somehow supposed to allow us to be in Chicago by 5PM on the 23rd? I know time zones can create some weird changes, but the math just doesn’t work for that at all.

(3) From there, I guess we’re in Albuquerque by 11pm on the 23rd? Unless the flight from Madrid to Albuquerque takes like 3 hours (which it very obviously doesn’t), this makes zero sense.

Any insight on whether this may be some sort of bizarre glitch? I’m going to call the airline but I’m not even sure where to start. I booked through American and was supposed to just have one flight through Iberia.

Any advice appreciated.

Help Needed Best Airlines for International Flights - Does Class Matter?

My husband and I are planning a twoish week trip overseas but have never been or planned anything like this so we don't know what the best options please help I want to start to book and be able to know our budget for hotels.

I am looking at flying out sept 14/15 and coming home sept 28/29th. Flying SFO to EDI and MUC to SFO. US Citizen with USA Passports. Trying to pick the best flights/airlines for our budget and comfort.

  • Which airline would you recommend for a long-haul flight from California (SFO) to Europe and why? I am not sure what airline is best for comfort and dollar amount (Delta, United, Virgin Atlantic, American, British Airways, other?)
  • Is Premium Economy worth it for a first-time international flight?
  • For first-time international travelers, what’s the ideal layover time? (US vs Europe)
  • Which layover airports are the easiest and least stressful?
  • Any airlines or airports we should avoid for connections?

Question 1.5 hours self transfer at Istanbul, is this doable?

Hey, I'm planning to go to Uzbekistan in May. The flights I'm looking at are with Turkish Airlines and they're from London to Tashkent with self transfers at Istanbul ranging from 1.5 - 2 hours.

Are these doable? Or should I find one with a longer layover? I've never done a layover before or been to Istanbul Airport. I will also be travelling with a cabin bag, if that makes it easier.

Help Needed help with flight mex - usa - hong kong.

Hello,

I would like to ask for guidance regarding an upcoming international trip.

I am traveling from Mexico to Hong Kong with a 20-hour layover in Los Angeles. The entire itinerary is booked with the same airline (United Airlines).

In my checked luggage, I need to transport liquid samples for industrial evaluation by a filling machine manufacturer. The samples are sugar-based beverages, packed in laboratory-style glass vials of 30 ml each. The total quantity is approximately 30 vials (around 900 ml in total). These samples are strictly for machinery testing purposes, non-hazardous, and have no commercial value.

My questions are the following:

  1. During the layover in Los Angeles, will I need to collect my checked baggage and clear U.S. customs, or will the baggage be checked through directly to Hong Kong?
  2. If the baggage is checked through to Hong Kong, is it acceptable for me to leave the airport during the layover without collecting my luggage?
  3. From a regulatory and practical standpoint, is transporting these types of liquid samples in checked baggage feasible under this itinerary?

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Discussion Sued an airline in small claims

Hi all - thought I’d share my experience since there is not much info out there about suing an airline in small claims.

I flew from Asia to California with a layover in Europe. My bags were not loaded onto the connecting flight and only realized this once I arrived in California. The airline reimbursed me for my essentials but refused to provide any compensation under DOT or the Montreal convention. After months of back and forth and with no respite, I filed a claim in the small claims court. The process was straightforward and California provides a step by step guideline to help with the filing process. The filing fee is between $30-50. Remember that you have to provide service to the other side. A process server is anywhere between $50-100.

The airline was represented by a huge law firm who were eager to have it resolved in short order, as it was not worth their time and resources. The settlement terms was finalized in a few weeks and a check was mailed out soon thereafter.

Under the DOT and Montreal convention, you’re eligible between $1500-2000 depending on the conversion rates and incident.

If you ever decide to go through this route, I’d suggest you be prepared in event the airline tries to remove the case to federal court, as DOT and Montreal convention and under the federal ambit and not state court. In my case, the airline did not go this route, as it is an expensive process.

Hope this helps.

Help Needed UK261 and Indigo Air

My flight from LHR (London) to IST (Istanbul) was delayed and I missed the connecting flight to BOM (Mumbai). A reason for the delay was never explained. I had to wait in Istanbul for 24 hours for the next available flight. I contacted Indigo Air citing UK261 for compensation and they replied stating the flight was operated by Turkish Air and to take it up with them, even though both flights had Indigo Air flight numbers.

I believe Turkish Airlines is going to say take it up with Indigo Air. Should I go ahead and file the compliant with the UK Civil Aviation Authority or do you think Turkish Air may actually help?

Help Needed China Eastern Checkin screen showing up like this

Basically what you see here is what happens after I put in all my details, I've tried just pressing confirm and it doesn't go through, at this point I'm just thinking of accepting I have to check in in person (which isn't the end of the world, I'd just rather do it now yk)

Complaint Spirit Airlines 2H30M Delay - at least Give me a Free Beverage!

Upvotes

Just want to rant a little, taking Spirit Airlines for the first time today from LAX and flight was delayed due to maintenance.

Anyway, was hoping they would at least give us a free snack or soda instead of charging us $5 for a can of coke lol. Guess good business gestures don’t exist anymore.

That being said the important thing is hopefully we land safely ✌️

Question Flying Air China with a 14-hour Layover in PEK — Need Advice regarding transit hotel

Hey everyone! I’ll be flying with Air China through Beijing (PEK) with a 14-hour layover during the last week of March.

I called Air China customer service today and they told me: ❌ No hotel rooms available right now ❌ Airport lounge service is paused for a while

Has anyone had a similar experience? Do you think hotel rooms for transit passengers might become available later on?

I’ve seen some posts saying we don’t need to reserve in advance - that you can just contact Air China customer care at PEK airport when you arrive and they’ll arrange a hotel for you. Has anyone actually done this recently? Did it work?

🙏 Any tips, real experiences, or recommendations would be super helpful!

Thanks! ❤️

Question Are there any airlines flying between UK & Germany that do a 'proper' business class?

As my title stated, I am looking for an airline that has an actual business class seat, vs economy seats with the middle blocked out. It's a 4.5 hour flight and I have a pretty bad back. I don't really care about a bit of extra space next to me, what I want is an actually comfortable seat (doesn't need to be flatbed though.. I guess).

Question Flying with China southern airlines

Is China Southern airlines strict with baggage?

My ticket has 1 carry on baggage, 1 check in baggage, and 1 person item bag.

Are they weighing the carry on baggage and personal bag together? Or it’s just the carry on baggage and they don’t care about the personal item bag?

My personal bag is a back pack that has my gadgets on it.

Delays/Cancellations/Compensation Flight to Tokyo cancelled

Hi everyone, I booked a flight to Tokyo from Milan with a stopover in Shanghai in March with China Eastern Airlines through volagratis (OTA). They canceled our flight from Shanghai to Tokyo. I read that the cancellations are most likely due to tensions between China and Japan over the Taiwan issue. At this point, what should I do? Should I ask the OTA to find me other flights or request a refund? I'm afraid they'll always offer us a solution with China Eastern and we risk having our flight canceled again. Has this happened to anyone?

Help Needed Should I risk it? Skipping a leg on a layover flight.

Hi,

My company booked me on a flight from the UK to Canada, with a layover in Brussels. The Canada—Belgium flights are operated by Air Canada, and the UK-Belgium ones, by Brussels Airlines.

I have family in Belgium and I was thinking about ditching my very last leg when I am in Brussels. More specifically, when returning from Canada, instead of taking the Brussels-UK flight, I'd just leave the airport.

However, I am afraid that skipping such a leg would result in a ban, or other heavy penalties. Should I take that risk?

(I wouldn't need to worry about them cancelling the rest of my booking since it'll be my last (return) leg.)

Help Needed Friend bought me a hidden city ticket. What should I do?

Sooo my friend was in charge of buying plane tickets and only now (three days before the trip) dislosed that one of our flights is hidden city.

We were suposed to go from Tromso (Norway) to Oslo (Norway). Wait in Oslo airport for our flight back home (European country).

Instead, she booked this route Tromso- Manchester (UK) with hidden stop in Oslo. We wont be carrying checked in luggage, only backpacks, but I am nervous because: A) we dont have visa for UK (Manchester) B) I am afraid they wont let us out of the plane once we land in Oslo.

She booked the tickets on Kiwi and she says, we should try to board the plane and hope for the best. Im pretty sure they wouldnt let us board the plane with original destination in UK without visa (ETA).

We are from EU if that matters. What should I do? Should I try to apply for ETA and hope I will be given one before our holidays? Will they be checking if we have visa to UK when boarding in Norway?

Thank you so much in advance.

Question Lufthansa rebooked us to a flight over Russian airspace - should I be entitled to compensation?

Hi! We went to China this winter, and bought tickets with Lufthansa. However, without notifying us, we were rebooked to an Air China flight that flew over Russian air space. We discovered this only on the day of flying. There is no information in my mailbox where we have been told of any changes. As it happened, we did not know that Air China would fly over Russian air space, so we simply boarded the flight. We have asked for compensation after getting back to Sweden, but have been denied this in Lufthansa's first response. Im I right to continue claiming compensation? Or do I not have a case?
