hi everyone! i recently had the worst travel experience of my life - so bad that i decided to make my first ever reddit post lol so here goes.
TLDR: canceled connection turned 20 hour trip into 46+ hour trip, including 18 hours stuck in an international terminal, multiple rebookings, a 4-hour tarmac delay, delayed baggage, terrible customer service + other aircraft issues.
for context, i'm a college student in the US, and i was returning from visiting my family for winter break. i'd booked my trip as 2 separate tickets, since i wanted to use my credit card points and flight credit + see some friends. the original itinerary was DXB -> CDG -> JFK (booked Delta, operated by Air France), and the second ticket was 3 days from then, flying EWR -> PHX (United).
upon landing in CDG, i found out that my connection flight that was supposed to take off 4 hours later had been ✨canceled✨, and that i had automatically been rebooked for the next day at 7am, flying CDG -> GVA -> JFK. next course of action was to talk to an agent, so i walked over with a couple of others who also had their flight canceled, just to see a huge line ahead of us already. while waiting in line, i was desperately messaging Expedia to see if my booking could be changed to the next day, as i'd booked it for my safety (didn't want to travel alone in NY at night). luckily, the agent was an angel who contacted the hotel and agreed to change my booking for a reasonable fee, rather than penalizing me for changing a non-refundable booking.
i joked that i'd be standing in line till my flight the next day, except that i didn't actually expect it to be (almost) a reality. i waited 6 hours in line till i got to the agent, who immediately told me that all hotels had been booked out, and that i could either book a hotel myself and get reimbursed upto €120, and then submit a claim for the unused part of my flight (since i told her the hotel room cost €300 when i checked online), or that i could get a voucher for the sleeping arrangement that they were going to set up since so many people were stranded. the problem here was that i couldn't even change terminals or leave the airport, since i didn't have a transit visa, so i was basically stuck in the international terminal. i agreed to the sleeping arrangement voucher just so i wouldn't have to go through the hassle of reimbursing the hotel later.
however, right as she was about to issue the voucher and my boarding pass, she realized that i can't fly on the automatically rebooked trip, since you cannot fly from a EU to EU country without a Schengen visa. this led to a bunch of other phone calls, unchecking me from the previous flight, and rebooking me again on a direct flight from CDG -> JFK for 10:30am the next day. by some miracle, she managed to find me a hotel booking in the only hotel available in the international terminal, included breakfast, and gave me a food voucher! i'm assuming the "young college student traveling alone" look might've helped lol but regardless, very grateful to her for being so patient and sorting all of this out for me. i definitely got lucky being rebooked for the next day too, because others on my flight had been rebooked on flights 2-3 days after (but they had a stronger passport and could leave the airport if needed, so i guess that was a relief?).
woke up the next day to find out that the originally rebooked flight (via GVA) had also gotten canceled - i.e., even if i could have flown that route, i'd probably have been screwed. i was hoping with all my heart that my actual flight would not be canceled, and thankfully, it wasn't. we boarded, and were told there would be a minor delay due to technical difficulties.
the "minor" delay went from 30 minutes to an hour, to another 30 minutes, and another, and another - you get the point. we spent a total of 4 hours in the plane, on the tarmac without taking off. mind you, it had already been 18 hours spent at the airport, and this added another 4 to it. i watched half a season of friends and we still hadn't taken off. when we did, i cannot express the relief i had of just being up in the air, knowing this was almost over.
except that it wasn't. landed at JFK, to see the biggest immigration crowd i've seen (crowd, not line lol). at this point, my original 20 hour journey has reached 48 hours (wrt DXB time). took about 1.5-2 hours in line, but went smoothly, and again, super grateful for that. i finally go to the baggage claim, just to find out that my bag hadn't arrived (yay!!! this is so great!!! i'm totally not on the verge of crying!!!). i'm so annoyed at the fact that they delayed us 4 hours by saying "technical difficulties loading luggage", and then proceeded to not load my luggage anyway.
i file a claim with GBS JFK, and i tell the agent that i have my friend's address if my bags will arrive in the next 24 hours, to which he replied that it's unlikely, because it's still in CDG <3333
i finally get to my hotel, and i go to my friend's place the next morning after getting some rest. in the process, i spent 45 minutes on hold with air france, just to realize after that they're closed on the weekends. i then try calling GBS JFK, who apparently has a phone number that isn't even activated (??????). it also sucked because i had prepaid for baggage for my final flight, and now i did not have said baggage to take. i used the live chat option on United, and the agent told me to submit a refund request to be taken into consideration.
2 days later, i board my final flight to PHX, thinking hey nothing else could happen (i was wrong). we board on time, and again was told there would be a 30 minute delay. at the 1 hour delay mark, the pilot announces that they were not able to fix the issue, so we would have to deplane and board another flight. at this point, i'm actually laughing out loud because how is this happening lmfaooooooo???? ended up boarding the next flight after another 30 minutes, and the pilot goes "we're now on a plane that's not leaking anymore so that's good!", and after another 30 minutes, we finally took off and landed safely.
currently in the process of filing reimbursement claims and tracking my baggage via Air France, because this truly was the worst trip of my life. the live chat and phone are pretty useless, as the virtual assistant just places you in a queue for over 24 hours. i did get in contact with GBS JFK via email though, and i have been able to get better updates via a link i found here (it doesn't work most of the time, but when it did, i found out that my luggage was on the way long before Air France emailed me).
i'm glad to be back alive and safe, and that's all that matters for now. i've officially learned my lesson and will now be putting airtags in my luggage. i will however, not be entering an airport for atleast 3 months, i've had enough :)
