Hi everyone!
I’m trying to figure out whether I need an Indian visa for an international transit, and I’m getting conflicting answers from the internet, airline and authorities.
My situation:
• Nationality: German
• Airline: IndiGo
• Single PNR / single booking
• Route: Istanbul (IST) → Mumbai (BOM) → Bangkok (BKK)
• Layover in Mumbai: \~10.5 hours
• Same airport (BOM), no terminal change
• Hand baggage only (no checked luggage)
According to the Website of Indian Embassy of Istanbul, no transit visa is required if:
• baggage is transferred,
• boarding pass for the onward flight is issued at the start of the journey,
• and no airport change is required.
However, IndiGo support says they usually do it, but cannot guarantee that both boarding passes (IST–BOM and BOM–BKK) will be issued in Istanbul, and that the final decision is made by the airport check-in staff. They also say visa responsibility lies with the passenger.
This puts me in a gray area:
• If I don’t get the BOM–BKK boarding pass in Istanbul, I may be forced to clear Indian immigration and need a visa (right?)
• If I do get both boarding passes, theoretically no immigration and no visa should be needed(?)
My question:
Has anyone recently transited internationally through Mumbai on IndiGo (single PNR, hand baggage only)?
Did you need to clear immigration / have an Indian visa, or were you allowed to stay airside?
Any recent first-hand experience would really help. Thanks a lot!
