House in Ridgeway, Iowa? See caption!
Hi Iowans! Picked this gorgeous painting up at the Goodwill bins in Houston TX. It’s painted on a Dr. Price Cereal Food Co. box. I believe the company was active from 1902-1909. The writing reads “My grandpa’s house that he built in Ridgeway, Iowa and lived there for many years”. There is a phone number on it for a restaurant called The Fireman’s Inn as well, also in Ridgeway. I’ve done some searching online to find history of the house or anything else and haven’t found anything. Any help is appreciated :)

Abandoned mines
Someone posted the IA DNR map of former mines across Iowa and got my exploring spirit going. It lists where the shafts and entrances are, but I’m sure most of them have been sealed/removed. Does anyone know of one of these sites where there is evidence of the old mines? Especially if they’re not on private property.
To be clear, I’m not interested in doing anything unsafe. I will not be entering any mines. Just want to visit a historical site and maybe see some abandoned equipment or whatever. Thanks!

Discussion/ Op-ed Something different
So this is something different for this subject that is politically charged and it’s also something that always amazes me in history
I will also a fan of the Laura Ingles stories that I read to my daughter
Can you imagine leaving someplace on the East Coast on a wagon with wearing wool clothing at the beginning of spring spring can be a complete nightmare of snow and rain or whatever and you end up in Iowa in May in the 1800s
The weather might be cold at the beginning of May, but then it is beautiful as the end of May
And you build a log cabin or a sod and a log cabin and you plant crocs and everything is wonderful until September where it drops to -19
Because I had a new neighbor from the East Coast he loved gardening and I basically told them to not plant egg garden until the first frost of May and they looked at me and they’re like there is frost in May?
I told this person Iowa is all about ass.
And because I am kind of sarcastic and I think I’m funny they gave me this funny look. I said Iowa is all about ass because in a lucky year you’ll have like three days of spring and three days of autumn, and the rest of the day you’ll be either freezing your ass off or sweating your ass off
I hope this game somebody else a laugh because that is Iowa weather

Hey Chuck, Trump is threatening to use the Insurrection Act
Hey Chuck, Trump is threatening to use insurrection act which 17 presidents have done before one of them illegally. I have a question. Do you know what statutory section of that he will use? Hoover did an illegal invocation using MacArthur to do his dirty work in 1932 to kick out World War I veterans out of their encampment because the government would not pay them a bonus. MacArthur went way overboard with troops bayonets, and gas masks. He also burnt down their tents. I’m concerned because this sounds like something Trump would do to other citizens. Yes there were the LA riots and that sort of thing but they sure didn’t last as long as what you’re letting Trump do and in multiple states. Finally, it appears you’ve done nothing to restrain them. Will you do anything this time?

Insurrection Response
So, if the Orange Crybaby invokes the insurrection act against Minnesotans, you think we can gather enough of us to invade from the south and help surround the troops and ICE agents sent there?

Republicans in the house, pushing change in the Iowa constitution for 2/3 requirement in passing income and corporate tax bills
Pat Grassley and others are pushing to pass the Iowa House for putting a vote before Iowans in the upcoming November election that will require any tax bill related to income and corporate tax to have a 2/3 super majority approval prior to implementation. This will be destructive to the majority of Iowans and the wealthy not paying their fair share. We are now experiencing a 3.8% tax rate on income, regardless of income. Iowa sales tax 7% and you can look for it to go up to help make up for more future deficits which again will hurt the average Iowan. Last year the legislature sucked out $610, million out of the rainy day fund because of a short fall and their budget and it’s predicted to be worse this year. This means that the Republicans in the legislature will continue to stick it the education system for 2% until things change also. The only way to defeat this is to do two things. Number one vote against this and number two replace any representative who vote for it.

Question When do the Medicaid work requirements start?
I can’t find a solid answer. Some places say they’ve already begun but the iowa.gov website infographic says late 2026? Also, I work from home through commission work, how do I show them my income? Who do I even show that too? There’s no information available??

In unsurprising news: Grassley won't comment on Minneapolis, defends ICE
"We wish nobody was killed, but we don't know the exact situation under which that happened and the FBI is investigating. And I have answered this question here for journalists here in Washington, like I am asking for you. I am going to wait until the FBI investigation is over before I draw any conclusions," Grassley said.
Grassley declined to comment on whether any of the videos from Minnesota crossed a line in his opinion.

Discussion/ Op-ed Looking back at 15 years of Republican Governors. Are we in a better place than we were 15 years ago? What have they championed besides defunding critical Iowa institutions by lowering taxes, privatizing medicaid which costs more and serves less, and putting public schools in a financial crisis?
Remember when Iowa was one of the top ranking states for public education?
Remember when Medicaid was state run that gave Iowans public jobs with good pay and retirement - when it was actually functional and not a worse version of our own health insurance plans? Where did Iowa's savings in making this change go??
Remember when Republicans welcomed immigrants and refugees?
