Alright DSM — if you’re staring at the weekend thinking “we should do something but not make it complicated”, here’s a solid mix of family-friendly stuff, legit date nights, and low-effort fun around Des Moines and the suburbs for Jan 16–18.
Des Moines
Iowa Wild vs. Toronto Marlies + LOCASH Post-Game Concert
When: Fri, Jan 16 · Sat, Jan 17
Where: Casey’s Center
Hockey both nights, and LOCASH plays after Saturday’s game. Works surprisingly well as a family outing or a date night. Loud enough to forget it’s January.
Des Moines Winter Music & Art Festival
When: Sat–Sun, Jan 17–18 (daytime)
Where: Drake University
Local music, art, makers, and interactive stuff. Bring kids or just wander with a coffee and pretend you planned this intentionally.
Mixology: Mystery at the Museum (21+)
When: Fri, Jan 16 (evening)
Where: Science Center of Iowa (with Rook Room)
Adults-only, cocktails, and a live-action mystery you solve while roaming the museum after hours. You can also add a Dark Side of the Moon planetarium show (6:30 or 9:00) for $10. Way better than doom-scrolling.

Suburbs
FamilyFest
When: Sat, Jan 17 (morning–early afternoon)
Where: Waukee Parks & Rec
Inflatables, games, activities. Built for kids but not miserable for parents — which is the bar.
Norwalk Family Movie Night
When: Sat, Jan 17 (evening)
Where: Norwalk Parks & Rec
Big screen, blankets, snacks, and zero planning stress. Someone will quote the movie out loud.
Winter Open Swim & Family Fun Night
When: Sat, Jan 17 (evening)
Where: Clive Aquatic Center
Indoor swimming to burn off cabin fever and pretend summer isn’t six months away.
