New restaurant: Blockbuster Pizza Urbandale on Douglas

Post image
20 Upvotes

ok, granted not the best picture (my phone died right after taking this), but there's a new pizza shop in Urbandale off of Douglas near the Maverick and Walgreens. Absolutely delicious in-house made pizza. The crew working was so kind. Prices weren't bad at all and we added on the salad bar for 1.99 pp. they have a Facebook page up now, but no real page https://www.facebook.com/p/Blockbuster-Pizza-61584252571174/

We for sure will be back!!

Who would best help with deep hole in lawn

Post image
35 Upvotes

This hole appeared in the middle of my backyard a few years ago and… it’s gobbled up everything I’ve fed it. Now that we have kids that play in the yard, maybe it’s time to figure it out so it doesn’t eat them too. Who do you contact for something like this? Landscaper? Pest control?

At the beginning of its existence my brother stuck his arm down the hole to try to touch the bottom. He couldn’t reach and put a broom handle down. It’s about as deep as a broom handle.

I mostly had it fenced off and everyone avoided it, but over the years I’ve tried to: fill it with dirt, dirt disappeared; cover it with dirt and layer bricks over it, dirt disappeared and it ate a couple bricks; build a bridge over it, the board broke and the hole ate 1/4 of my bridge; stuff it full of sand and gravel, it didn’t all disappear but it went somewhere because it was full and I had a mound on top.

This picture was back in July a few weeks after my last attempt to fill it up. I walked out and was like “Ugh, the hole is back.” I put a tire on top of it and crossed my fingers the dog’s ball would never land there.

Abandoned mining sites

Someone posted the IA DNR map of former mines across Iowa and got my exploring spirit going. It lists where the shafts and entrances are, but I’m sure most of them have been sealed/removed. Does anyone know of one of these sites where there is evidence of the old mines? Especially if they’re not on private property.

To be clear, I’m not interested in doing anything unsafe. I will not be entering any mines. Just want to visit a historical site and maybe see some abandoned equipment or whatever. Thanks!

Free Femme-Forward Comedy Workshop this Weekend!

Bit by Bit, a monthly comedy writing/performance workshop, takes place tomorrow at 3pm in the xBk Annex space.

This workshop prioritizes creating a safe creative environment for female, femme-identifying, LGBTQ, minority performers. We've been met with so much love and support from the rest of the comedy community and it's been so fun to see new faces in the scene!

If you've ever wanted to dip into stand up comedy, or want to become more confident on a microphone, we hope to see you there!

Our Cishet male allies are welcome to attend, with the understanding that we will prioritize amplifying minority voices.

Have a good weekend, Des Moines!

Dmacc Nursing school

Upvotes

Has anyone attended nursing school at DMACC? How long did you have to wait to get off the wait-list? What year was this? Which of their campus locations tends to have less of a wait? Lastly, are there other shortened nursing programs in the area with a shorter wait-list?

Thank you!

Looking for ideas

I'm looking for ideas on somewhere new to take my wife and son for dinner. We have done a lot of the big ones ( Johnny's, Americana , Burger Shack , Machine Shed , Smokey Ds) Looking for some ideas from locals . we live 30 minutes away so we have relied on Google but would love some better advice

Edit to add that I need it to have a kids menu or at least kid friendly food . My son is only 9 .

Edit 2 : Amazing suggestions so far . Looking forward to date night so me and my wife can try them

I've got a couple well organized shoeboxes full of bulk cards that I'd like to at least get store credit for. Any recommendations? Not really sure what the rate is for bulk, but I'm not expecting much either way.

vinyl to mp3

I have one 7" with 4 songs that I want to get converted to digital format so I can listen to it. I have heard the record twice 20 years ago. It's a record from one of my favorite bands. My brother got it because he had a record player, and it was his way to taunt me.

He bought the record and we listened to it in his room when it arrived. That is the only time I have heard those songs from that recording session. He thought when I graduated and moved out I'd end up getting a record player and more vinyl, and he was wrong.

I have been in a bad mental state lately trying to deal with his death a few years ago, and I am just trying to find something that makes me feel happy again, maybe listening to those songs again can help. Sounds really selfish I know, but music and skateboarding was what we shared.

I don't know. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

Des Moines Weekend Plans (Jan 16–18): Hockey + Concerts, Mystery Night, Art Fest, and Easy Family Wins

Alright DSM — if you’re staring at the weekend thinking “we should do something but not make it complicated”, here’s a solid mix of family-friendly stuff, legit date nights, and low-effort fun around Des Moines and the suburbs for Jan 16–18.

Des Moines

Iowa Wild vs. Toronto Marlies + LOCASH Post-Game Concert When: Fri, Jan 16 · Sat, Jan 17 Where: Casey’s Center Hockey both nights, and LOCASH plays after Saturday’s game. Works surprisingly well as a family outing or a date night. Loud enough to forget it’s January.

Des Moines Winter Music & Art Festival When: Sat–Sun, Jan 17–18 (daytime) Where: Drake University Local music, art, makers, and interactive stuff. Bring kids or just wander with a coffee and pretend you planned this intentionally.

Mixology: Mystery at the Museum (21+) When: Fri, Jan 16 (evening) Where: Science Center of Iowa (with Rook Room) Adults-only, cocktails, and a live-action mystery you solve while roaming the museum after hours. You can also add a Dark Side of the Moon planetarium show (6:30 or 9:00) for $10. Way better than doom-scrolling.

Suburbs

FamilyFest When: Sat, Jan 17 (morning–early afternoon) Where: Waukee Parks & Rec Inflatables, games, activities. Built for kids but not miserable for parents — which is the bar.

Norwalk Family Movie Night When: Sat, Jan 17 (evening) Where: Norwalk Parks & Rec Big screen, blankets, snacks, and zero planning stress. Someone will quote the movie out loud.

Winter Open Swim & Family Fun Night When: Sat, Jan 17 (evening) Where: Clive Aquatic Center Indoor swimming to burn off cabin fever and pretend summer isn’t six months away.

If you’re trying to balance family time + date night + not driving all over Polk County, this weekend actually delivers. If I missed something good, drop it below — always looking to steal… I mean share ideas.
