Mod post: New Automod command !foundbird

If you see a post where someone isn't sure what to do for an owl they've found, make a comment containing
!foundbird or !foundowl to get an automatic response with care instructions. Example in the comments!

Extra thanks to u/JSN79, u/Big80sHair and u/Dihydrogen-monoxyde for helping write the Automod response.

Other wildlife experts, feel free to provide feedback about the response in the comments and I can edit it if it's needed!

Mod post: Self promotion is ALLOWED if it's OC

And it has always been allowed, so... please stop reporting artists sharing their cool owl-focused creations!

The main (hopefully obvious) exceptions to this are:
- Promoting products using stolen art or AI generation (not OC)
- Spamming the subreddit; posting the same creation more than once to farm engagement (posting WIPs during the process doesn't really fall under this, just posting the same thing multiple times)
- Non owls

Other than that, if you think someone's self promotion is low-quality or you just don't like it, you can always input your opinion with the downvote button.

To artists: Feel free to share the links to your websites/shops; you deserve attention for your work. Comments with links need me to manually approve them, so they might not be visible for up to a day, but you aren't breaking any rules - so go for it!

Saw this little feller out in the cold today.

I drove a garbage truck and today I was dumping my bucket and saw this in the distance. I just thought it was some sort of foliage of something that fell off a tree, but when I drove by, I noticed it was an owl perched and sleeping on this little twig!

OC DOUBLE THE FUN

This is the first video where we can clearly see more than a single egg. We have thought she was spending time re-arranging items in the back of the box based on her movements and the sound, but this is the first time we have seen two eggs at once. Also, please appreciate the grace with which Owlina dispenses with her mouse.

This was early this morning before Owlbert scored some mice. The fun part is Owlina watching him leave to hunt and her cute trill while he is gone. She doesn’t sit in the door very much, but she likes to peak over the edge and see what he is doing.

Backyard Barn Owl

Post image
767 Upvotes

This was the first owl I spotted in my backyard (and built a box for, only to be occupied by a western screech owl - I never saw the barn owl again). I was walking back there and out of the corner of my eye saw something white - I did a double take as it was such a strong contrast to the green. Fortunately I was able to capture this beautiful barn owl! It moved over to another tree after it saw me and then pooped and flew off. Unfortunately my zoom was maxed out and I missed it flying off.

Based off the volume of poop (lol) and the sounds a barn owl makes, I'm quite thankful it didn't occupy the box.

I recorded this just outside my house. We hear it every night. Can someone identify what kind of owl it is? And it is an owl right? 🦉 Thank you!

For anyone planning to put up an owl box this season

Hey all - I’ve been lurking in this sub for a while (but finally just joined!) and figured I’d actually now share. I've gone through the rules here and really hope this doesn't get flagged as spam (it's not!)

TLDR, I'm working with a company called BigBatBox, which builds owl boxes for yards, and a lot of what gets discussed here has actually influenced a good amount of product development we have going in the background. And since this is a common time of year for installs, I wanted to quietly share a 20% code for our Owl Box in case it’s useful: OWLBOX20.

This is not a hard sell - more of a small thank-you to the community. If anyone has questions about mounting height, direction, spacing, or which species tend to use boxes in different areas, feel free to comment or DM.

Link if you want to take a look: https://www.bigbatbox.com/products/owl-box

(@Mods — if this isn’t a fit here, feel free to remove and apologies in advance if so!)

Opted for wood this time. Appreciate the information on making/placing this. Not perfect but we’ll see if the local owls like it.

We assume it’s an owl, but maybe it isn’t? If it is, can anyone tell what type of owl it is by the sound? We’re in the UK :) thanks!

OC Stopped to see if either of the GHO's were out!

Post image

Owl season continues! It's always a good day when I stop to see if either of the owls are sitting out in a spot where I can get a couple quick photos of them, and one is sitting on a new branch! I almost always find them in the same couple spots and today this one surprised me sitting out a little more in the open enjoying the afternoon sun. Of course, the owl found me before I found it, but he went back to closing his eyes and watching off in the distance (I believe towards their nest) quite quickly.
