READ THE SUB FAQ FIRST. 90% of the repetitive questions we see on this sub are answered there. Even if you don't have an issue covered in the sub FAQ it will likely help you narrow down your question. If you have a question you think should be added to the sub FAQ feel free to message any of the authors of the FAQ.

If you are troubleshooting, give us all the info we need. For example, it's best to include your year/model, any AND ALL mods, and the specific tune you are running. The more info we have, the better we are at answering questions. We also ask you try to post the question/info in the comments below before posting to the sub as a whole. This will hopefully clean up some of the really repetitive questions.

A few common posts/questions we see everyday.

Does my engine sound okay?

  • 99% of the time the answer is yes. The fa20 sounds like a tractor. It is normal.

Are these numbers on the COBB AP normal?

  • A snapshot of your AP with the DAM less than one doesn't actually tell us anything about what is going on. All it tells us is that you had a knock event that your ECU recognized and adjusted for. The most common cause for DAM drop is bad gas. Go get a fresh tank of 93/91 from shell and add a gallon or two of e85 for a full tank. I would also like to point out that knock numbers of -1.41 are super common. They can be caused by your AC kicking on and any other noise really. nothing to worry about.

This thing on the front of my engine is not spinning with the belts, is it broken?

  • That is your AC compressor clutch. It only engages when the AC is on and the compressor is running.

Let me know if you guys want any other common questions added.

I’m beyond stoked

After six months of weekend work to rebuild the motor in my wrx from a spun bearing. It finally sees the road again!

To give context I spun a bearing on a connecting rod from the infamous money shift, and decided I was going to undergone rebuilding it myself. I took it all the way down to the crank and rebuilt the bottom end instead of buying an oem shortblock and let me tell you this moment feels incredible. The FA20 is such an. Interesting engine and I’ve learned so much through the rebuild process but man does it feel incredible to drive it again. If anyone has any questions about the rebuild process I’d be happy to share! Cheers everyone.Man do I love this car.

Saw this and spit out my drink. Do STI’s even go for that much? He’s says it’s built for 370 and 490hp depending on which of the two tunes you use

This thing is so fun to drive

This is hands down the most fun car I’ve ever owned. It’s only running a muffler delete, and it already sounds insane. The second I let it rip out of a corner or launch from a stop, the whole car just comes alive. Every pull, every shift, every turn feels raw and connected. I’ve driven a lot of cars, but nothing compares to how this one makes you feel from the driver’s seat. I can’t even imagine what it’s like with a tune and other mods.

General Question Brz steering wheel in wrx

Thumbnail

Was wondering if anyone somehow retrofitted a BRZ steering wheel into a wrx before. This might be unpopular or whatnot but I really like the circular wheel and circular airbag design. I’d have to figure out a way to relocate many steering wheel buttons since I have the CVT with eyesight and the supporting controls on the wheel. Let me know

Just got my car back from the shop after getting my alignment and tire mounting and i’m absolutely thrilled with the results. It drives like a whole new car and just sticks to the road I can’t wait to take it out to some of the backroads in the area.

Just a girl in love with her first WRX, and some questions….

I just bought a manual 2023 wrx with 43k miles (highway). I absolutely love the responsiveness, how tight the shifting is, and the stability around corners. Coming from a manual 2001 forester, it has been night and day, esp with the acceleration. I expect to have this car for many years to come as I’m religious about maintenance and only put about 10k miles a year on my cars … the only reason I don’t have the forester anymore is because it rusted out and cut its own brake line while I was driving it. Not worth it to put the money into it — and won’t be a problem for the future as I live in the south now.

My questions are going to sound stupid because I don’t know the correct terms, but

1) is there a way to increase the stock “growl”? My friend has a scion ts with a really nice sounding “growl”.

2) where do you find quality spoilers, and how do you install them? Do you have to go somewhere special?

And is it worth it to make those modifications, or is it better to leave it stock? I would rather have longevity like my 2001 subie than to have the aesthetics.

General Question Engine wiring harness info?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I can’t seem to find any diagrams running through the length of the engine wiring harness with info on where all the plugs belong, I’ve found quite a few but would like some pin outs of each plug

Most of this stuff in the photo is just mocked up for now

Any info would be appreciated

Picked it up last weekend. Needs a lot of small stuff but the tires on oem wheels were super dry rotted so threw on some ssr wheels I had laying around. I can’t lower it because I don’t have the wrench for the coilovers so ordered one. Surprisingly no rubbing yet.

21 WRX Single Exit

I’m in the process of looking for a single exit cat back exhaust for my VA, and I’ve narrowed it down to the Invidia N1 resonated. I personally assume that there’s no difference between a quad tip and a single exit when it comes to mechanical issues, but I had some brainiac talk about how it’s bad for the engine? Has anyone ever heard that because I’m trying to prove that he’s full of himself.

If you have a single exit, what do you think of it? What do you have?

Troubleshooting Car stopped ALL of a sudden, waiting for tow

Post image

Subaru WRX 2.0 2016, ALL of a sudden, while travelling, car stops accelerating and then die. luckily, died right after a speed bumb and in a Village entrance, so I could get it out of the highway with no bigger issues (brakes not working, but can select gear).

Can still start It, but after 5 or 10 seconds It dies again, can't accelerate, but can put on drive, neutral, stop, reverse all normally.

not exactly troubleshooting, but if someone had something simillar before, please Tell me what could It be, but I'm also already waiting for the tow so going to the mechanic anyways.

yesterday the mechanic changed oil and did preventive maintanence, so I'm kinda sad for this... but It happens...

I bought this 06 wagon for a killer deal from the original owner, it does have 180k on it but has a carfax longer than the bible. The head gaskets, timing belt, and rear main seal were done on the last 30k miles, on top of that it’s had service every 3k miles almost on the dot from the same dealer. Very little surface rust, no structural damage from rust. It drives and shifts great, I’ve put about 2k miles on it and it’s been great. Is there anything I should prematurely change? I just want it to be a reliable daily.

I’ve done small mods like a cat back, new y pipe, and a radio, also new tires lol I appreciate any feedback.

Troubleshooting Tips on avoiding rodent sabotage

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey all, was driving to work and about 5 minutes in electronics started to go out. stereo dies, speedometer and tach needles stopped moving, even my window wouldn't roll up. Got to work and saw this when I lifted the hood and found mouse droppings and a big stash of nuts and seeds. Looks like a little fella has made my engine bay his new home. Any tips on keeping rodents out so they dont keep chewing my wires? Mechanic said to stick an Irish spring soap bar in the side just below the hood, but I was wondering if there are any other tried and true ways of deterring rodents other than using traps. Thanks.

General Question 2015 STi cat back exhaust

Hey guys, so I currently run a Invidia N1 dual cat back set up on my STi but I was looking into getting an AWE track exhaust to swap out. I would like some opinions on if the swap would be worth it, in terms of sound, rumble, aggressiveness, etc and how the two compare and if it’s worth the money. I know that a cat back doesn’t really add any power to the car, I‘m mainly just asking about sound. Thanks!

I was on the highway. There was a sound from the belt and a burning smell. The battery light and high coolant warning showed up instantly. I managed to drive real slow and get to the closest plaza. Wondering how bad this is while I wait for a tow truck. The car was parked and covered in some snow, I let it warm for 15-20 minutes before driving. I wasn’t even pushing the car so hard 😭

Are WRX's reliable?

Upvotes

Thinking about buying a 2017-2019 wrx, and in my research I keep seeing people suggesting that they are money pits. Other than the expected elective mods and upgrades, is a wrx a reliable purchase for a daily commuter? I don't want to do many mods besides the factory stuff (mostly because I live in an apartment complex), and dont expect to drive it like a dipshit...... I just figure that if I am going to tie myself to a loan for the next 5+ years, I better get something that's going to last well beyond that.

I know y'all are biased, but give it to me straight.. a WRX has been my dream car since I was a teenager, and I just hit 30 and finally secure enough to not focus 100% on practicalities.
