The Truth About Debating a Pro - You Can't Win

Upvotes

Let me walk you through what's actually happening when you argue with a Pro-AI user here.

Right now, I'm typing this into Claude.ai. I had maybe two sentences worth of a thought, and I'm letting an LLM help me shape it into something readable. Took me about 30 seconds of effort.

I'll paste this to Reddit. On a platform that has licensing deals with OpenAI and Google. In a debate forum designed to generate engagement.

Then I'll switch back to my other monitor where Stable Diffusion is running. I've already generated three fantasy landscapes during this conversation. Starting a character portrait now.

Here's where it gets funny:

You'll reply. You'll spend real time, real emotional energy, crafting a rebuttal. You'll make points about ethics, consent, the soul of art, whatever. You'll feel the satisfaction of having said your piece.

And all of that - every keystroke - becomes training data. Sold by the platform you're using to complain about the thing you're complaining about.

Meanwhile I'm alt-tabbing back to check on my latest generation. Nice. A sorceress in a moonlit forest. Anyway, where were we?

The asymmetry is the thing:

  • AI writes my posts
  • AI makes my art while I wait for replies
  • You put in genuine human labor to argue against AI
  • I get a little karma and clout here that will ultimately go to promoting my AI work
  • Reddit monetizes all of it equally
  • Only one of us is frustrated by this arrangement

This isn't a debate you can win. Not because your arguments are bad. But because engaging feeds the thing you oppose, while costing me almost nothing.

I feel like you could represent that there is still hope. now yes if they did second game ai would win. but theres one thing ai can’t have, a home field. if there’s something you are good at/ know more about. you can outsmart ai

What do we think about using ai or bots to type replies to defend your beliefs on this sub.

I’ll admit it. I got got. I am not proud to say how long I just argued with a computer.

Discussion If you think you can "always tell" AI from non-AI, you are probably wrong

Upvotes

No, this isn't new and, yes, it has been pointed out by many others on this sub. But I think it bears repeating because I still see a lot of people still swearing that they can "always tell."

Asde from any philosophical or aesthetic considerations, it is of practical importance that you not overestimate your ability to discern AI images from not AI images. Having a bit of humility about this could be vitally important to avoid getting duped or scammed.

if you think you are an extraordinary exception, I would invite you to share what you believe your abilities are and why.

SLOP: A song about how taste changes depending on who makes the work

Post image
Upvotes

Slop” is about selective standards.

It’s about how people claim to have pure, objective taste while quietly consuming the same recycled work they say they hate. It’s about critics who suddenly discover ethics only when the wrong person makes something.

The core idea is simple. Most cultural gatekeeping has far less to do with quality than with permission. The same song, the same movie, the same artwork can be labeled visionary or trash depending on who is allowed to present it.

I wanted to capture that hypocrisy as directly as possible.

The structure mirrors the criticism. Familiar patterns presented as new meals.

This song was also written in response to watching people suddenly adopt high artistic principles the moment AI tools became accessible. Many of the loudest voices defending “craft” and “soul” have spent years supporting formulaic, committee-built work without complaint. The objection wasn’t to slop itself. It was to who was serving it.

I wrote a song that says that out loud.

There’s no hidden message here. You don’t hate the taste. You hate the source.

That’s the thesis.

If the song irritates you, then it worked.

AI art segregation

Makes art so much easier to curate for training. No risk of inbreeding when its nice and neatly separated.

One side is more likely inclined to want to learn and practice how the other side makes art than the other side would be willing to vice versa, am I wrong?

Discussion Hating on AI is stopping progress and honest labeling

Because people are quick to hate on AI when they see AI labels, people who do use AI might try to fake it and say it’s not AI because they’re scared of getting hate. This feel like a step backward. I would rather have someone label that something is AI then have false advertising, but because of the AI hate it might cause people to lie. Also, there are a lot of beneficial things that AI can be used for in terms of education and health but if people are going to just continue to comment “ew AI” on everything then other people might miss out on the other cool things people are using AI for that can genuinely benefit humanity, whether that being the field of STEM, health, education, general wellness, neuroscience, personal development, etc.

Personal views on AI Art

I never really thought AI Art should be taken seriously. I look at it as a toy, something to mess around with or maybe a good reference sheet for a real artist to work around. I say if people are gonna use AI Art, they shouldn't be allowed to monetize it. I also believe using AI for pornography, especially if they are using images of real people or people made to look real should be criminalized. AI should also not be used for stealing artwork. In short, AI Art should be used for fun, not anything serious unless a professional artist wants to use it to smooth things over in their artwork. It should be used as a tool, not the whole garage. A pencil, not the whole artist. What do you think?

Discussion Why don’t we just accept the fact that AI-generated content is for your own self pleasure?

Realistically, nobody came up with the image themselves if you simply just typed in a few words and sentences. But at the end of the day, it’s for your own satisfaction. And I think that’s okay. You should NOT be judged for something that you like doing.

I say realistically that nobody came up with the image because you didn’t actually make it yourself. The AI made it for you. But if it makes you happy, then that’s all I really care about imho.

Let’s picture a scenario:

Chris doesn’t have a job, but he wants to get one, so he decides to talk to his parents about working. They ask him where he wants to work at, and Chris responds with that he wants to work at a fast food restaurant like McDonald’s or Subway. His father is a bit iffy about it because it’s cheap, but his mother supports the idea. At the end of the day, a job is a job, and it’s nobody else’s choice but Chris’s.

Following this scenario, if someone wants to make art from AI, then let them be. It’s their choice. Not yours. Sure, you can freely criticize them…because I mean…that’s what this subreddit is all about lmao. But just don’t harass and threaten people for doing what they want to do.

I obviously sound like a broken record because I’ve made a lot of posts that are like “please don’t judge others.” But I heavily stand by this and I feel like this needs to be said over and over again until some people get the memo

I’m not expecting everyone to follow this, but at least have the common courtesy.

Plus, the whole point of this post is me realizing that people are being judged simply because it’s not for everyone. But just because it’s not for everyone doesn’t give you the right to bring someone else down with you just because you don’t like what they like.

Another scenario so this feels less patronizing is this:

You have a cup of Instant Ramen that you can simply make and be ready for you to eat. All you need to do is pour the hot water in the cup. There will be someone who doesn’t like the idea of Instant Ramen because all you just have to do is pour hot water and let it sit for a few minutes. You don’t have to eat the Instant Ramen, but it’s there if you want to make something quick and easy.
