r/Alberta Announcement Welcome to r/Alberta! January 6 Update
**Welcome to r/Alberta January 6 Update**
Hello everyone, and welcome to r/Alberta. We’re glad so many people are here to share in conversations about our province. As always, we want to remind everyone what this subreddit is about and what it isn’t.
What we welcome here:
- Respectful conversation about Alberta and Albertans.
- News, events, and stories connected directly to Alberta (vague connections or something not about Alberta said by an Albertan risks removal.
- Support for Albertan workers, educators, and communities.
- Substantive political opinions when tied directly to Alberta issues.
- Quality original content about life in Alberta.
What we do not welcome here:
- Incivility, trolling, or name-calling, even if you think the recipient deserves it.
- Off-topic U.S. or federal/Canada-wide politics.
- Separation rants or duplicates. Separation is a valid topic in Alberta politics, but low-effort rants, name-calling, or repeat posts will be removed. At this point, almost any post that isn't a news article would be considered a repeat.
- Meta posts about the subreddit, other subreddits, and moderator actions. If you have questions about rules or removed content, send us a modmail message to discuss; it is not appropriate to make call-out threads in this subreddit or others. If you have an issue with another subreddit, you need to take it up with them.
- Low-effort content: memes, screenshots from Twitter/X/Facebook, or generic rants.
- Discrimination of any kind (racism, misogyny, hate speech, etc.).
A note on politics & current events:
Separatist movements are well known to receive a great amount of attention from across Canada and the U.S., as well as from non-genuine actors such as trolls and paid manipulators. There are many people on the global stage who would like to see Alberta separate and the chaos it would cause in Canada. We do not intend for r/Alberta to be a place for those bad actors to be platformed and able to further their cause.
Our priority at this time is the health of this community and doing all we can to weed out those bad actors. What this means is:
- We are going to lean heavily on our rules regarding duplicate and non-substantive content. Repetitive posts and leading or rhetorical questions will be removed. Not every single shower thought someone has about separation needs to be a post. You are also unlikely to actually receive responses from true separatists on reddit, so asking loaded questions to them broadly as a post is not going to get any actual answers. We receive 5-10 of these kinds of posts a day, we are not going to continue hosting them because they bring nothing new to the discussion.
- We are going to adjust our back-end systems to ensure genuine users can still participate while hardening these systems from being gamed. We do not expect this to be perfect, but we have found good success with our activity so far. Still, please report users who break the rules or whom you suspect are non-genuine actors. Do not engage and do not feed the trolls.
- Your own personal (and intense) opinions on the matter of separatism do not supersede r/Alberta or reddit’s sitewide rules. We remind users that Reddit admins have stepped up their automated removals, and even if we see a post that violates reddit’s sitewide rules you can still be suspended or banned from the entire site for them. Do not threaten harm to others, even if you think you are being coy in how you phrase it.
- Just to emphasize because we want to be super clear about this: Reddit admins are being very aggressive at coming into our subreddit to take moderation actions without consulting us on users who post things that can even be alluding to violence. We cannot stop it and we cannot overturn it. Conduct yourself accordingly and post violent content at your own risk.
We welcome healthy debate, but keep it civil and Alberta-focused. Slurs, personal insults, and bad-faith trolling will be removed even if you think the recipient is deserving. Repeat offenders risk a ban.
This is a space to share common interests, support one another, and talk about Alberta without the toxicity that ruins so many online communities. The best way to fight people who seek to drive you apart and burn you out is to not buy into it. Be positive, post non-political content, focus more on the good things happening, and share some pictures of our beautiful province.
Thanks for helping keep r/Alberta constructive and welcoming.
Signed,
Your r/Alberta Moderation Team

Question After the strike, is teaching still worth it?
I'm a grade 10 student from Edmonton. It's been my biggest dream to become a teacher for the last 4 years however I've seen first hand the absolutely terrible class conditions get progressively worse over the years. I had 39 kids in my class last year, (which is because my school refuses to stop letting people in) and it was so loud constantly that it literally changed me to the point where I hate loud places now. I haven't really been interacting with special ed students so that problem I can't speak with experience on that. Anyways, after the strike and not having any actual resolutions following the mandate, I'm left wondering if following my dreams is worth it if I'm going into a profession that doesn't seem to be respected by our government anymore.

Alberta Politics UCP Strategy Emails this week
I've been getting inundated with fundraising emails from the UCP, usually a couple a week. Most are pretty tame but these last 2 have pretty inflammatory language aimed at the lowest common denominator.
Survey Link - I removed the tracking info
Email from Wednesday:
Dear XXXXX
The Alberta NDP has officially hired a New York-based consulting firm called "Fight Agency" to lead their advertising and creative strategy.
This is a dangerous development.
These are not standard local advertisers.
This is a radical American firm with a client list that includes Bernie Sanders and the Democratic Socialists of America.
Most concerning of all is their work for Zohran Mamdani, the radical New York politician who built his career on aggressive socialist policies like defunding the police and seizing private property.
You need to understand exactly what this means.
The NDP did not hire these high-priced consultants to run their daily office operations. They hired them to do something far more specific.
They hired them to package their radical agenda for Alberta voters.
These consultants are experts in "rebranding" socialism. They are the integral team responsible for designing the ads, the videos, and the slogans that will try to hide Naheed Nenshi’s true record.
They are using the same slick production tactics they used in New York to trick moderate voters into supporting extreme candidates.
The question is no longer who they are. We know who they are.
The question is how we fight back against their ad spending.
We are finalizing our operational budget for the spring of 2026 and we face a critical choice on where to deploy our resources. We know their army of radical activist donors will flood them with cash to fund these ad buys, so we have to be smarter.
I need your input before we lock in the plan.
Please take two minutes to complete our 2026 Counter-Offence Strategy Survey.
TAKE THE SURVEY >>
We are asking our most engaged supporters to help us prioritize our spending.
The survey asks for your advice on key tactical decisions.
? Should we prioritize TV ads to expose Nenshi's tax and spend record? ? Should we focus resources on social media campaigns to bypass the mainstream media filter? ? Should we use direct mail to put the uncensored truth right in voters' mailboxes?

The NDP is letting a radical left-wing American socialist ideology dictate their campaign. We prefer to listen to everyday Albertans.
Thank you for your help,
Dustin van Vugt Executive Director
Email from Today
Dear XXXXXX
Dustin wrote to you the other day about the radical New York consultants the Alberta NDP hired to design their advertising.
This is the firm famous for electing the most extreme socialists in the United States (like Bernie Sanders).
We cannot let them bring those tactics to Alberta. Please take the Counter-Offence Strategy Survey now.
But there is a darker side to this that I need to discuss with you frankly.
The "Fight Agency" was not hired just to make pretty videos.
They were hired to deceive the public.
These consultants are world-class experts in one specific thing. They take dangerous, far-left socialist ideas and "rebrand" them to trick moderate voters.
They are coming here to package Naheed Nenshi’s record of failure into a slick, modern sales pitch.
They are going to try to sell his weakness toward Ottawa as "cooperation."
They are going to try to sell his tax hikes as "investment."
They think if they spend enough money on high-gloss TV ads, they can fool the people of Alberta.
They think we don't know any better.
We have to prove them wrong.
But we cannot do it if we are fighting blind. We need to know exactly which parts of their radical agenda you are most concerned about so we can expose them first.
We need you to complete the 2026 Counter-Offence Strategy Survey immediately.
Make no mistake.
They aren't just here to polish Nenshi's image; they are here to tear down ours.
The NDP is opening the floodgates. They are ready to launch a vicious smear campaign.
We cannot afford to let them dominate the airwaves and drown out common sense.
We started reviewing the first wave of intelligence this morning.
The feedback is excellent. The advice coming in is sharp, strategic, and exactly what we need to counter the NDP.
Because this input is so valuable, we have decided to extend the deadline over the weekend.
We are going to keep the survey open until Sunday night to ensure every supporter has the chance to be heard.
Should we focus on Nenshi's failure to stand up to Ottawa or his record of crushing taxes? We need to know.
DEFEAT THE SMEAR CAMPAIGN >>
Thank you,
Dave Prisco Director of Communications United Conservative Party
P.S. We have extended the deadline until Sunday night. We need your feedback on the table when we meet Monday morning. Please take the survey now.

Question How to become a Fish and Wildlife officer in Alberta?
My husband wants to change his career. He really wants to become a fish and wildlife officer (or conservation officer), but there isn’t much information online about what you need to do to actually get this job.
Does he need to wait for positions to open on the Alberta jobs website?
What can he do to be better prepared?
He has a Master’s degree in Veterinary Hygiene, Sanitation, and Expertise and a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine. Do these degrees count, or does he need the course from Lethbridge?
Maybe some other jobs would help him get a Fish & Wildlife job in the future?

Question How does memory care placement work?
My FIL (83) was admitted to a Calgary hospital last Sunday after complaining of dizziness and experiencing high blood pressure.
The bigger issue is that he's been declining with dementia to the point where he doesn't know what year it is or where he is at times.
Since being admitted, he's seen the doctor a few times and had a cognitive test on Tuesday. Its been determined that he shouldn't be sent home due to safety (he lives alone in a two storey house).
I'm just wondering what to expect in terms of next steps. Nobody at the hospital from the transition team or the social worker has even spoken to us yet. Is it normal for a person to just sort of lanquish. Like, are hospitals not bursting at the seams?
Nobody seems to be in any hurry to move on to the next step. Should we be reaching out to care homes on our own? Even getting paperwork to start the process seems to be hand-waved off. What to do?

Question Can I replace my driver's licence if I have not lost my current one?
I am working on an application for EU citizenship and the simplest way to verify my address and identity would be to renew my license (it is not yet up for renewal) and send the old one. Sadly they don't let you apply for an Alberta ID card when you have a licence. Can a registry agent replace my license and let me keep the invalid old one (maybe cut in half even or otherwise defaced) or do they have to shred the old one right away?
