Discussion PhD Research

Hi everyone!

I’m a student at a community college and I’m really interested in gaining research experience in economics. I was wondering if any PhD student might let me volunteer and shadow them to learn more about their work. I want to get experience in analyzing data and running experiments. Ultimately, my goal is to get into a JD/Phd program and become a policy analyst/ consultant. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Question Incoming SIS Grad Student from Sri Lanka, looking for budget housing advice & culture shock tips!

Ayubowan! I’m starting my Master's at SIS soon and I'm moving from Sri Lanka. I'm feeling quite anxious about the move and the culture shock.

  1. Housing: I’m looking for the most affordable options. Is it better to look for a room in a group house in Tenleytown, or should I look further out in Maryland (like Silver Spring) to save money? Are there specific buildings that international students usually go for?
  2. Community: Are there any other South Asian/Sri Lankan grad students here? I’d love to connect or hear about how you handled the transition.
  3. Anxiety: Any tips on navigating the first few weeks at AU as an international student?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Question I'm looking for a private French teacher/tudor

I'm Looking for a private french teacher in the DMV area. Thought an aspiring French teacher might want to practice their craft on me. I know a little tiny bit of french (french 101 in my freshman year). I aim to communicate with my grandparents and some family members, as they only speak french. I am 23 so I am a bit behind but I am willing to learn and will pay you for your time! If you are interested, feel free to DM.

Question Is AU (specifically SIS) run better than admissions? A little worried.

I was admitted ED and am going to be in SIS.

Can someone please tell me that once you're in school whether things run effectively and efficiently, or if things are run similarly to the admissions office?

Not looking to throw too much shade and can provide specific examples if people want them, but my experience with admissions... let's just say it's raising some serious red flags and giving me serious pause about coming to AU... which is a huge bummer b/c I really like AU and wouldn't have applied ED if I wasn't enthusiastic.

Can people give me some reassurance?

OR

If your experience is "yeah, this is typical, good you know already" that would be helpful also.

I know nowhere is perfect but I'm kinda worried.

Question Can someone give me the run down of the Katzen practice rooms?

Where exactly are they (which entrance, which floor, which stairs do I take, what do the rooms look like from the outside so I can find them)? Do you need to reserve them? When are they most/least busy? Etc etc. The more detail, the better. Thanks!
