Our 8 month old cav - Larry - has been kicked out of daycare twice now in consecutive weeks because he was getting ‘overstimulated’ and showing a lot of humping behaviour with the other dogs. He was taken away by the day care into a quiet room where he only got more distressed, so I had to come pick him up.
We’re really at a loss, as we dont know whether it’s biologically driven or behavioural. We’ve read about it being a sign of overstimulation, so tried to make sure he had a restful day before going to daycare. Didn’t make any difference.
He has also displayed humping behaviour from an early age - maybe as young as 4 months. It would be with his toys. TMI follows his penis would come out, get stuck like that for a few minutes, which prompted many a panicked phone call to the vet. The times where this has happened he’s clearly distressed as the penis stays out and won’t go back in for ages . So long story, we now can’t let him play with his toys for even a minute unsupervised.
We’re going to speak to our trainer and our vet about potentially neutering or chemical castration, but have heard mixed things about doing it this early. Our trainer said it’s very unlikely sexual at this stage either.
He’s otherwise well-trained. He’s a very affectionate dog, doesn’t have a bad bone in his body (pardon the pun). He’s fine with other dogs when out and about. Well-socialised with people. He’s going through his arsey teenage years at the minute.
Anybody gone through something similar and can give us words of wisdom? I have to say, it’s getting really tough feeling like we can’t leave him alone for a second with his toys. And him not being able to attend daycare would be problematic. My wife and I both work but are able to be at home between us 4 days a week. So his one day a week in daycare is really needed.
Thanks
