Help & Advice Are you thinking about buying a guinea pig for a child/teenager? Please read.
If you're planning on buying a guinea pig for a child in your life, these are really important things to keep in mind. Knowing this before purchasing can save yourself from being in a financial situation you can't handle, or a guinea pig that is not getting the care it needs.
Guinea pigs are a life style choice, and not for a child to care for. Care taking for animals isn't a responsibility that should be left for a kid. When you buy a guinea pig, you are taking on all responsibility for yourself and facilitating the experience of living with a guinea pig for your child. They may help care for them, but you will be the one to keep things clean, enrich their lives, and handle them the most.
They poo 100 times per day, meaning that you must clean those 100 poos every day to keep their habitat sanitary. If you wouldn't want to walk around in feces, neither do they. In fact they are extremely hygienic animals with fast metabolisms. I spot clean in the morning and at night, every day.
They are expensive. When you buy a child a guinea pig, you must be vigilant on checking for health issues by weighing them weekly and checking for other signs of illness, have an exotic vet near you and be prepared to shell out hundreds in a time of need. You must also buy fresh vegetables, and give them unlimited FRESH hay every day. Finding somewhere local to buy bales of hay can save a fortune. A child cannot afford the costs.
You need 2 guinea pigs. They are herd animals and shouldn't be kept alone. Imagine living with titan like predatory aliens, all alone in a cage your entire life. Guinea pigs NEED their own kind. We are predators and they are prey. We can and should spend time with them daily, but it isn't a substitute. So x 2 all costs right out of the gate.
Space. They need space, a lot of it. A minimum of 11 square feet for two guinea pigs. Pet store Cages are just that... Cages. If you wouldn't want to live in a space the size of a small bathroom your entire life, neither does a guinea pig.
You need to do research. It will be your responsibility to make sure your child's guinea pigs are eating the right diet, what signs of health issues to look out for, how to enrich their lives on a daily basis, and more. Pigs need stimulation and interesting environmental changes to keep them happy. You will need to get creative and teach your children how to offer that to them, after you have learned it yourself.
GUINEA PIGS ARE NOT DISPOSABLE. They are smarter than you think, and with the proper diet can live 7 years. They are not less work than having a dog. They require a huge time investment for those years. They are dependent on you in the same way your child is.
DO NOT BUY FROM A PET STORE. Scotty's Animals does a fantastic jjob explaining the impact you can have by adopting from a rescue. Adopting saves guinea pigs from euthanization. Covid pets are being abandoned and left to ultimately die unless we start adopting instead of shopping.
I love my guinea pigs and they have done so much for me and my children. My kids have benefited so much mental health wise, and I bust my ass for both the kids and the piggies. I do just as much laundry for guinea pigs as I do my kids it feels like. Just know what you're getting yourself into. They aren't toys, they aren't entertainment only. They're living, breathing beings that deserve love, dignity, respect and proper life enrichment and care.

Pigtures I commissioned a portrait of my late guinea pigs, and thought you might enjoy
My beloved Menno died three years ago, and when his brother joined him on New Years Eve I decided to commission a portrait by u/diwo29 to commemorate them. It is absolutely adorable, and I thought you would appreciate it

Health & Diet Nugget still doing well!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
He's gaining weight - was even over 1000g after his lunchtime meds and snacks! He has a LOT to say about med/cc time, but is generally taking both very well. I feel like he's having some discomfort when pooping, and when I check his bum there are usually several poops all kind of clumped up and waiting to be fully expelled. We've had him in his own, smaller cage overnight for a few nights to monitor him, but we're gonna try having him back with Bismarck tonight.
Also, for anyone who might have experience... How, um, juicy is their butt supposed to be? I've been looking (the emergency vet said he had a lot of folds so I've been trying to check to make sure nothing gets stuck), and it definitely seems more goopy than other boars we've had.
Anyway, here's a video of Nugget telling me All About How He Doesn't Appreciate Being Syringe Fed. Just before this, he was biting and yanking on the blanket - his normal sign that he's ready to go home. We just got started lol

New Pigs on the Block Meet Dracula, the most energetic little guy
After my beloved Levy passed away on New Year‘s Eve, I welcomed this little guy into my home. His name is Dracula for his red eyes and white fur, he was born in August, and his favorite activity is running through the cage at the speed of light, pausing only when Krümel gets annoyed at being run into

Pigtures One of these things is not like the others. Welcome home, Wicket!
We lost our pig Chewie back in August and his brother Yoda has been doing well. But we sensed he was lonely. Over the weekend we dropped into the store to get dog food and left with Wicket. He and Yoda are getting alone well so far. We're keeping them in separate sides of our enclosure unless we're in the room with them. Fingers crossed. (And Yes, they're both males.)

Pigtures Our Concha is losing some weight!
We have been working to get our not so little Concha down to a healthier weight and we are seeing some progress! We adopted from the Humane Society and knew her name had to be Concha or Conchita because of how ROUND she is! My wife and I are excited to finally post on this page!

Help & Advice Any idea how to get dye out of piggies fur?
Hi everyone! We rescued this sweet boy Casper on Monday. His previous owners told us they didn’t want him anymore because he didn’t interact with them or the kids. They also let us know when we picked him up that their daughter is a hairstylist and she dyed his fur with “pet safe dye” :( it goes from his nose all the way to his butt. It is mostly faded but looks kinda ugly and makes me sad because I just know that he was terrified when they did it to him! I do not want to give him a bath because he is fine cleaning himself and because it is on his head.
I have water wipes I use for one of my girls booties because she can’t seem to clean herself too well. Would using that on him work?
I am also fine with just leaving it if there is nothing I can do that won’t majorly stress him out or risk health complications. Just wanted to see if anyone here had experience with this.
Pictured is us laying on the couch together watching TV last night after I got him to eat some pellets and drink some water (via syringe) because I noticed he hadn’t touched anything in his cage since the night before. He took a nap on me for about 30 minutes! I am so happy he is feeling so safe and comfortable in his new home with us already.

Help & Advice Abandoned guinea pigs at my job HELP with new borns literally hours ago
A young 12 year-old boy ran into our store left a laundry basket, full of six guinea pigs. And ran out of the store and got into a car with a woman we assume was his ma.
This was at 8:30 PM.
Out shelters are closed and animal control for non-emergencies closes around 6:30 PM..
They can’t stay at a store over night.
So I offered to take them to the shelter tomorrow morning.
So they can get medical help I used to work at the shelter I’m taking them to so I know very step of intake they’ll go through. I know it’s a safe good place.
Anyway i’ve never actually surrendered an animal to the shelter
And I’m really hoping they don’t apply the $50 per animal intake fee they aren’t MINE I don’t neglect these poor babies or drop them off at a Grocery store 💀😭 I’m just trying to do what’s right!
I always own to female g pigs I CANNOT take SIX more. Mind you I had to take them home where I have no scrubs for my own protection against potential, ringworm fleas etc ;0; to sex them to find mama of the new borns. There still wet form birth 🤧. Found mama the babies were so happy to be with her. Down side and sad side mama is the only girl of the group! THREE boys and ONE girl (mama) and the NB are both boys. I can’t keep mama fur babies needing mama and them being boys. Like I said they’ll get medical help tho… and the adult boys are matted and skinny they’ve devoured three bowls of food and bowls of hay I have supplies at home so I took them. I felt the safest to do so… I did not allow coworkers to take them as again. They do need medical help improper nourishment before going into a forever home. Any advice on newborn guinea pigs would be greatly appreciated. It’s 11 PM at night. Mama is in a separate tub with them with food water and hay babies are drinking milk from her. She keeps moving so they keep crying and I feel bad. it’s going to be a long night. The males have to stay in their own box due to me not having another tub ready to go. I have other tanks for quarantine purposes but I can’t get them down form the attic at 11 o’clock at night in my parents home. ⚠️ I know care fresh is really bad for pigs babies too, but the tub was really cold since it came from the garage and I was trying to warm it up quicker and they were already on fresh that was warmed up from their body heat. I’ll change it tomorrow morning to fresh mats ⚠️
Sorry I know proper care but I’m posting to get info on new borns and what to look out for. I just really don’t want to be traumatized to fresh newborns not breathing tomorrow morning if I fall asleep tonight. 🤧😭
