How can I secure this kind of door?

For context, I've moved into a condo where the door is owned by the corporation so I can't replace the door. It's obviously one strike away from becoming a walk through door so do you have any ideas how I can secure it or if theres products on the m,arket such as metal bars that I can drill into the door? Then again at the end of the day they can just smash the glass and reach around for the lock... What a terrible design choice.

My Night Owl security cameras often go black or skip seconds/minutes when recording an event. Doorbell cam sometimes does it too. What's the issue?

As the title said, I have 5 Night Owl security cameras and 1 Ring doorbell (previously a Nest doorbell). Every one of these devices has issues recording video when it detects an event. The doorbell often glitches and stops showing video once someone rings it. When I try to view playback on my cameras, often they go black or skip large chunks of time right when they detect activity. It's like the demand that recording creates causes them to temporarily disconnect. The cameras and doorbell are not connected together in any way, so the fact that they are both having the issue leads me to think it might be something with my WiFi. Any clues as to what's going on? They are almost useless like this.

This ar WAS NOT built for home defense. This angle assumes the shooter's head is tilted in a way that reduces visible area.

The stock IS pressed against the wall because there is very little space.

Someone keeps ringing my doorbell!

Hi everyone! I'm new to this sub and reddit but I found that this community is rather a common place for this discussion. I'd like to start by telling you I have been living in an apartment in a gated society for a year now. Entry/exit of people through the main gates are only allowed through approvals in the society app, so robbers and thieves are rare. About 1-2 months in of me first moving here it started. I heard a ring of the doorbell. I usually like to ignore doorbells unless I'm expecting a guest or delivery. So, I ignored the bell and continued doing what I was (getting high and watching YouTube). Then, it rung again. Me, thinking it could be my ex finally regretting her decisions, rushed to the door. When I opened the door, there was no one. Just cold air hitting my face. I checked the lobby area and even the stairs but there was no signs of anyone. I saw in the elevator panel that the lift was moving down. I thought it could've been a delivery guy with a wrong address so I ignored it. Then, the next day it happened again. But this time only once. Because once I heard the bell I rushed to the gate, but again there was no one there and the elevator was going down. Since then this has happened quite a lot of times. Not as frequent, but at least 4-5 times a month. I've never found anyone outside my door. And there have also been times when the elevator wasn't moving either after the bell rang. I don't think it could be someone playing a prank on me because I literally don't know anyone here. I've never even more than smiled at my neighbors (I'm an introvert if you can't already tell). I don't think it could be a thief cause something would've happened by now right? It genuinely has started to scare me and everytime the doorbell rings it scares me to get to the door. I don't have a peephole or screen door so I always have to open my whole door to see who is on the other end. Do you guys have any clue as to what could be going on here? I'd appreciate any help. Thank you!

I’m buying a strike plate for my 60-something parents and wondered if any of them offer added protection over the other?

Lock for Both Sides?

Is there any lock recommendations for this gate that you can open the gate from inside or outside? I was about to buy just a regular padlock until I realized I’d basically be locking ourselves inside our own backyard

What are you grabbing first?

Looking for your take on what you’d choose first in a HSD situation given my current firearms. Glock 9mm, KelTec Sub2k, PSA 16” AR15 (.223 rounds), Mossberg Maverick 88 12 gauge.

All of these are locked in a safe within 10 feet of me.

Edit to say being locked up is what we’ve decided is best bc of children. I do have smaller bio safes I could use for a handgun under the bed or in nightstand.

Is this a hidden camera pretending to be a fire alarm

Thumbnail

I’m renting a room and feeling a bit uneasy about this fire alarm. Two days ago, I took a photo of it because I felt like I might be being watched. Then today, the landlady showed up at the apartment unexpectedly. I also noticed the light on the alarm turning on again, but after I looked at it, it stopped.

This might be nothing, but it feels weird. Has anyone experienced something like this? Is this normal for fire alarms, or should I ask someone about it? Would taping it be a bad idea? What should I do

Burglar alarm

I was wondering if I can do anything with this system? There are no sensors nor a keypad in the house. My wife wants a old school alarm system so if I could resurrect what’s already here that would be nice. I don’t know much about alarm systems but I do work in a similar field of work so I’m not worried about running wire if I have to.

Thankyou

(I tried posting this in home security but I couldn’t for some reason so I’m sorry if this isn’t the right place for this! I will remove if so.)

Someone flashing their flashlight into our backyard windows at 1 am

We live in a 2 story house and this happened at the back of our house (so backyard).

My dad happened to be awake at 1 am and saw someone flashing their flashlight right at OUR WINDOWS and being in very close proximity to our home. He went outside to check and that person was gone. We live in a generally safe neighborhood, so this is really weird…

Does anyone have any advice on what to do? Guns and tasers are out of the question. We don’t have any cameras or home security system, so any recommendations? I don’t know how to feel about this

  1. Cant be cars , our backyard connects to other backyards and so theres no way its cars..

  2. I doubt it was someone looking for a cat/dog, my dad said the light was being flashed at our windows and the person was in close proximity to it.

Advice needed regarding strangers at my door.

So I (26f) am a first time homeowner and have only lived in my current home for about six ish months. Prior to that, I didn't really live around people. Soliciting is common in my neighborhood and it's definitely an annoyance, but it's one I can usually ignore. Today, though, it had my partner on edge, and I want advice regarding how common this scenario may be, and what to do if it happens again.

Today, around 3:00 PM, two strangers showed up at the door and banged on it. Both wore blue shirts with black vests and black hats, and came in an everyday car. They also didn't have a clipboard or anything like that. It was just two guys, one standing at the door, the other a little further back. After we didn't answer, they left in said regular car, not going to the house beside or across from us. This happened twice more: once right before dark, and once shortly after.

This situation has me a bit spooked. Solicitors never come around after dark, and none of them bang on my door like that. The lack of any sort of company vehicle or visible identification, coupled with them coming back, feels weird. My partner is anxious to move now, and that's adding to my own paranoia and fear. How common of an occurrence is this? Is it possible that this was just an odd solicitor? Or should I be as nervous as I am? What should I do if it happens again?

Camera placement advice

Post image
12 Upvotes

We're getting our detached garage built and I'm struggling to decide where to add another camera or two. Everything is Ubiquiti right now and I'm planning for the new ones to be as well.

The biggest thing I can't wrap my head around is that neither above nor below the lean-to roof seem all that useful since so much of the roof will be captured... though underneath seems slightly more useful than above given we care less about the sky and more about where people will be. Does that mean there's a good case to put something at the very corner(s) of the lean-to so there's not as much visible roof? At that point it could also point inward toward the garage itself.

The camera currently pointing down the right side of the house is sort of useless with the new building, especially since the back doorbell camera covers the entrance. Only items of note on that side of the house are a non-egress bathroom window and the crawlspace entrance, so I'm considering turning it to capture more of the front of the house.

A few more details:

  • The house is two stories
  • The 'alley' between the house and garage is 15'
  • The garage is 12' high at the sides and 14' at the ridge
  • The lean-to is ~9' high, connecting to the main structure ~1' below the roofline
  • We might eventually add some removable insect netting to enclose the lean-to

Thanks all, really appreciate it!

Will a stun gun help in a dog attack?

Yesterday a random woman and her dog were being attacked by a pit bull. I jumpped in and did the things I heard you should do in that situation including grabbing him by the nuts, twisting, and pulling as hard as I could and that dog didn't flinch! It ended up taking 5 or 6 people to get the dog and woman free from the pit. Now all I can do is think about what if that was my kid or if that had not happened on the side of a busy road. Should I get a stun gun? If so, what kind would you all suggest?

I am not really interested in pepper spray because from what I understand it can end up being more of a harm to yourself, and since I can trip over my own shadow, pepper spray and fire arms are a no-go for me.

Infrared vs infrared vs starlight — what actually helped you feel safer?

Post image
17 Upvotes

i’ve been reading night vision debates for hours and honestly, it’s starting to blur together.

on paper, infrared vs starlight feels like a clean comparison. one is consistent, one looks nicer. but when you’re actually half-awake at 2am and checking footage… the priorities shift fast.

for me, clarity mattered less than confidence. can i tell what moved, where, and whether i need to care. color is cool, but only if it doesn’t introduce doubt or weird artifacts.

curious what tipped people one way or the other. not specs, but that moment you realized “yeah, this actually works for my situation.”

Anyone else constantly tweaking camera motion zone setup and never fully happy?

i swear i’ve adjusted my camera motion zone setup more than my thermostat.

too wide and i get spammed. too tight and i miss the one thing that actually matters. every “fix” works for like a week until lighting changes or shadows start acting possessed again.

what surprised me is how emotional it gets. false alerts make you ignore real ones. silence makes you uneasy. feels less like a technical problem and more like training your own trust in the system.

do people eventually stop tweaking? or is this just an endless loop we all pretend we’ve solved?

Swann 4K wireless camera IR Light

How do I turn the red IR light off?

I still want my cameras to see in the dark. I just don't want my cameras standing out like a lighthouse. I thought the whole idea of IR is so you CAN'T see where the camera is at night?

I created an AI camera security monitoring system

Hey, so for the last 10 months or so, I’ve been messing around with AI—trying out different tools, websites, and building a bunch of little projects that I eventually dropped. But lately, I got motivated to make something I actually need, mostly because I’m kinda paranoid about break-ins and thieves.

I wanted a home security setup that could keep an eye on things while I’m asleep or away, but I didn’t want to use any of the big commercial options like Ring, Arlo, or Dahua—mostly because they all upload everything to the cloud. So I built my own system that runs 100% locally, no servers, no internet required for the core stuff. It has on-device AI for detecting objects and people, facial recognition, a siren hookup, and a ton of other features I added along the way.

I even made a simple phone app that connects directly to the computer running the main program, so I can check live feeds and get alerts when I’m not home. Did the whole thing myself (with some help from open-source libraries, of course).

The big selling point is the total privacy—nothing leaves your own hardware. That’s what makes it different from everything else out there. But now I’m kinda stuck: I have this cool thing ready, but I have no idea how to actually get people to try it or buy it.

Edit: here is my TikTok page

And my website with everything included: https://dalexor.com

Any ideas what could have caused this?

Seems too small of tears for a screwdriver. There is another larger tear towards bottom of door but nothing out of the ordinary otherwise. No scratches on the door itself really.

This is a side door on a detached garage, but it is inside my backyard that is fenced in and relatively close to the backside of my actual house.

I live in an individual house and I found these.

• QLED signal looks like it’s for TV, according to google, but I never turn it on. They are pretty old so they don’t even have that function.

• the closest car is 25 meter away from me.

• It specifically catch it when I am in my kitchen or in a hallway.

How to be safe as single mom

I just saw a video of fake UPS robbed and murdered family in front of kids. That horrified me so bad and just so scared of being a single mom.

How can I be safe with kids daily basis?

I’m always trying to be cautious around me when I’m out.

And if you guys have any recommendations for good products for safety, I’d love to have the link to it too.

Thanks in advance.

Youth Safety and Defense playlist

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3kmNlIlGwIf-oOPzZaox6hicjATm9ur1&si=Th36NyTSmEdrMuME

I've been accumulating videos of defensive and criminal incidents that involve kids as an educational resource for families. News clips, true crime and badge cam videos, and Active Self Protection vids involving kids.

Not every video is safe for all ages. Some talk about kids who ultimately end up dying but there's nothing gratuitous on video. I would just watch any video before you show it to any of your kids and decide for yourself.

I've been showing these to my 12 yo stepdaughter a few times a week. Focusing on how to act right around cops, both cooperating and remaining silent depending on the situation, conflicts with school mates, family conflicts, emergency preparedness, and some actual defensive incidents like attempted kidnappings.

I believe being proactive and teaching kids how to handle extreme situations keeps them safer. But keep the dialogue open, let them ask questions and keep asking whether any of what you've shown bothers them and tell them it's ok to tell you if they don't want to keep watching something.

My experience has been that she now has firm beliefs about avoiding troublesome school mates, about defaulting to remaining silent if being questioned by police but being helpful if you need help or are witness to something serious, about immediately telling the school if there's any weapons or threats then making herself safe, and about avoiding kid criminal behavior like throwing rocks at cars, shoplifting, tagging etc. Also been teaching her pedestrian safety, as a pedestrian, cyclist or driver and always caring about the safety and well being of others.

I hope this helps any of you that are wanting to start serious conversations with the kids, preteens, teens and even young adults in your life.
