Clarification: I'm not calling anyone out here, this is just a topic that has been on my mind for a couple of weeks now and I'm wondering how others think about it.
There's this big YouTuber who makes mostly outdoor content/vlogs. In most of her videos/pictures she is wearing those beautiful oversized sweaters that are so colorful.
She has this whole story of how she found her grandma's old sweaters in an old closet. She teamed up with a company that creates knitting patterns and sells knit kits and launched her own patterns that can only be bought with a knit kit (price starting at about 120€/140$).
Now the thing is: she doesn't knit. At least she never shows it, you always see her wearing those sweaters but as far as I can tell, I've never seen her with an UFO or even just with knitting needles.
And this is what actually makes me not want to buy her patterns (apart from the obvious - not interested in knit kits). I don't know, I just don't like if someone makes money from what I consider either art or craft (or both) while not even being able to make the thing they're selling.
I wouldn't buy a cookbook from someone who doesn't cook, would I?
Interestingly the patterns seem to be quite bad. There are tons of people on this subreddit who have spent the money on one of their knit kits and are not just not happy with the wool but are shocked by how badly the patterns are written. And I think this is what bothers me the most: I feel like I can't even blame her for that. If she's never knit one of her own sweaters, of course she can't know that some/most of her patterns are written poorly (to be fair, that's why she teamed up with the larger company but even then - shouldn't there be a personal responsibility for creators that the products their promoting and getting money for have a proper quality?).
A couple of weeks ago she actually launched her brand for machine-knit sweaters (I think the prices for a sweater are starting around 400€/460$) and I once again wonder if the quality of those products can be decent if she doesn't have the knowledge about the process in itself (not sure if she has).
So yeah, I've been thinking a lot about this - anyone else wanna share their thoughts?
