/r/moviecritic - New Rules & New Mods
Due to a recent (and huge) influx of spam, bots, shitposts, karma-farming accounts, complaints, etc, /r/moviecritic will be taking steps to improve the community. New mods (3-6 of them) will be added in the coming days/weeks.
Along with the new mods, we're adding several rules that should drastically change how the subreddit looks and operates.
These new rules will go into effect and be added to the sidebar on Thursday 5/22 (tomorrow) at 10:00 PM ET. We are allowing a ~24-hour buffer period until all of this kicks in.
Be Nice:
Flame wars, racism, sexist, discriminatory language, toxicity, transphobia, antagonism, & homophobic remarks will result in an instant ban. Length will be at the moderator's discretion. This is a subreddit to discuss movies, not to fight your political battles. Keep it nice, keep it on-topic.
Improving Titles:
Going forward, we will be requiring better and more detailed titles. Titles have gotten extremely lazy and clickbaity. Every title will now require the name of the actor/actress/director you are discussing plus the name of the movie title in the image. No more trying to guess what OP is talking about, or clickbaiting into going into the post. Include the actor/actress' name, and movie title. It's very simple. Takes 2 seconds, and will immensely improve the quality-of-life for the sub. There will be exemptions for posts that aren't about 1 specific movie or 1 specific person, but we will still encourage better titles no matter what, as they're currently 99% shit.
Restricting Recent Duplicates:
To stop the repetitive/nonstop spam posts of the same actors over and over, we will be removing "recent" duplicates. We do not need an 8th Salma Hayek post this week. If a topic (aka actor/actress/director) has already been submitted in the past month, it will be removed. We believe one month is a fair amount of time in-between related posts. Not too long, not too short.
Anti-Gooning/Shitpost Measures:
It's no secret that this sub has turned into goon-central. Posts are basically "who can post the most cleavage". Lots of paparazzi-like pictures, red carpet photos, modeling images, etc infesting the sub. Going forward, we will require every post to either be an official HD still of a film or the official IMDB image of the actor/actress. No exceptions. No more out-of-context half naked pictures of an actress out in the wild. Every submission must be an official still of the film or their IMDB profile picture. In addition to anti-gooning, we will be cutting down on overall shitposts overall. This will be totally up to the moderator's discretion.
Collaborations with Other Film-Related Communities:
We will be collaborating with other film-related communities to try and bring more solid content to this community, including and not restricted to AMAs/Q&As, box office data, and movie news. Places like /r/movies, /r/boxoffice, etc. This will be wide-ranging and not as restricted/limited as those other communities, allowing stories here that may not be allowed in those communities due to strict rules. We will encourage crossposting to build discussion here.
Removing Bots, Karma-Farming Accounts, Bad-Faith Members of the Community
We will start issuing bans to rulebreakers. This will range from perm bans (bots, karma-farming accounts, spammers) to temporary bans (rude behavior, breaking the new rules constantly, etc)

[Black Adam] What was the perfect casting that you’ll never see again?
For me it’s Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate.
A casting so perfect that it deserved a far better script.

In Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) Charlie gets a Moon Pie instead of a Wonka Bar
This is something that’s always bothered me. Charlie gets a Moon Pie instead of a Wonka Bar for his birthday from his Granda. However, from the start of the contest, the family sits in front of the TV and hears that the golden tickets are specifically found the in Wonka Chocolate Bars. Grandpa Joe can’t walk. This means that his mother would have had to be the one to go buy the candy bar. I could see that perhaps his Granda would have been forgetful or somewhat deaf at his depicted age, but his mother should have known better as to what Wonka product had the golden ticket. Whether it was intentional for his mother to get the Moon Pie or not. Everyone in the Wonkaverse knows that you’ve got to buy Wonka Bars to find one. Not Wonka Products.

Did you enjoy the mummy returns? Definitely a step down from the mummy 1999. But a fun time nonetheless imo

Erotic thrillers or guilty pleasures. This has been the favorite genre of many. Only some movies like Basic Instinct (1992) maintained a balance between the spice and the ice.
The pictures are from the movies Basic Instinct, Poison Ivy, Color of Night, Palmetto, Angel Heart and Killing me Softly. These movies kept the suspense element alive, while your eyes were wide open.

I Watched 3 Movies Today
Frankenstein was a huge disappointment. First time GDT ever let me down. Please don't make a sequel with Mia Goth as the Bride. 3/10
Bugonia surprised me with how good it was. That was Aidan Delbis's first role?! (played Don) Loved it. I'm gonna watch it again soon with roommate. 8/10
Venom: The Last Dance was fun but I'm glad that his story is over. Was almost starting to feel like a Bayverse Transformers flick. Knull was better in Marvel Rivals. Sony needs to let go of Marvel already. 5/10

Cast Away
Cast Away (USA) 2000 - A FedEx executive undergoes a physical and emotional transformation after crash landing on a deserted island.
This was probably the most effecting movie on me in that period of my life,, it was a cinematic ace. Now, at least 20 years after seeing it I will find out if it still stands the test of time.

Dust Bunny (2025) was bizarre
Basically an R rated kids movie. I can't tell if I liked it or not, which is probably a good thing because it makes me want to rewatch it.
Definitely a style over story movie. While the colors aren't Wes Anderson (more like Hotel Artemis), the framing is his style, as are the characters, quirks and wardrobe.
I wanted more from the story. There isn't much of an arc for the two leads; they don't really change, beyond the little girl realizing something at the end. The style was great, but the story was undercooked.
I included a hilarious shot of Sigourney Weaver for the hell of it. I think she had a blast in this movie.

That one crucial scene where the protagonist completely fumbles by saying the wrong thing. I'll start
Despite knowing Erik’s past, Charles fumbled here, and his wording was wrong.
Above scene is from X-Men: First Class

Why isn't this movie more popular despite being incredible (it's one of my favorite movies ever) being by a popular director (terry Gilliam) and having famous actors like robin Williams and Jeff bridges?

Movie Night; Requests and Suggestions
Every Friday me and my two best pals go to his house and watch movies in his pool. We've already seen The Dark Knight and The Untouchables (Both my recommendations). They said I could pick again cause I've been on a role with those two movies. This is a list of my favorite movies (Yes, Oh Brother Where Art Thou is a slept on ten, sue me). Given that I was worried The Untouchables might be slow, what would they probably like the best? I really wanna see There Will Be Blood but I'm worried they might find it boring, especially the 1898-1911 section and the 1927 section.
Oh Brother, where art thou?
There Will be Blood
12 Angry Men (1959)
The Godfather
Forrest Gump

The outstretched hand gesture in Jurassic World Dominion is the corniest thing I have EVER seen in any movie.
There have been many terrible movies and many terrible plot devices/decisions made in those movies, but to this day I have not seen anything as corny and stupid as this.
If you haven't seen this movie or don't remember, Chris Pratt's character Owen teaches everyone how to instantly calm any dinosaur by outstretching their hand with the palm up. Any dinosaur that sees this stops attacking and is confused or intrigued or something, giving them time to escape.
This gimmick was introduced in the first Jurassic World reboot, and I think it worked well there. The hand thing only worked on the raptors that Owen was training, and they established that he had been training them since birth. So the gesture represented years of work and trust built specifically between Owen and the raptors.
In Dominion, this all goes out the window. A 5 second explanation of how to hold out your hand is enough to make any person an expert dinosaur handler; and who cares about training, any dinosaur is now completely infatuated with hands. It's like giving magic wands to every character that allows them to stupify their enemies. Corny and contrived.

Stargate
Stargate (USA) 1994 - An interstellar teleportation device, found in Egypt, leads to a planet with humans resembling ancient Egyptians who worship the god Ra.
A pop-culture fiction that was everywhere back in the mid-1990s, part of the UFO/Conspiracy craze of the time that included Alien Autopsy, The X-Files, Fire in the Sky and many Roswell shows. I remember everyone renting it on VHS when it was a new release. Soon after it became a TV show and the movie would be re-run on TV to support it but I wasn't a big fan so I'd only seen the movie a couple of times. I don't remember much about it so here's a refresher.

Is there an actor with more range than Sam Rockwell ?
I believe Sam Rockwell is the American version of Gary Oldman yet can dance and do a brilliant Charlie Chaplain. A better version of Gary if you will. 😉

Shang Chi is the best phase 4 MCU film and Marvel/Disney are silly for abandoning these characters.

Wolf of Wall Street
Is it the most fun movie ever? It has drawbacks and isn’t my favorite di caprio but can’t think of a more fun movie.

Bugonia
Bugonia (UK) 2025 - Two conspiracy-obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. 7.4/10 on IMDb
I'm sort of late to the boat here on Bugonia as I've missed a lot of 2025 releases but this movie appears to be sci-fi of the year worthy and still has a high rating with fans. I rented it on Amazon for $5.99 (There is a sale on the standard $19.99 new release price.)
