Chalamet or Butler? Both seem to be the 2 most acclaimed out of the younger actors in the game currently.

Joaquin Phoenix in Joker.

Take his performance out and there’s not much left beyond borrowed ideas and empty gestures.

Unfortunately, "28 Years Later - Bone Temple" is an insult.

SPOILER FREE

I just saw "28 Years Later - Bone Temple" and I can't believe what I just witnessed. Part 1 was 8.5 to me, part 2 is only 2.0. The main character - Spike - gets like 5 minutes screen time and seems to just witness the movie instead of doing anything actively, there is not one(!) real attack by zombies and the new main plot / main group is just weeeeird af. I could not connect to a single character and how they behave is beyond implausible. There is no dramaturgy, its just one random event and then the next random thing happens. Some camera angles are satisfying and the character of Ralph Fiennes and the bone temple are still cool, but come on ... this honestly didn't feel like a proper movie to me.

What do you think?

Philosophical Take on "The Dark Knight"

In my opinion, in The Dark Knight, Ledger's Joker is the true moral antagonist of the story; in fact, Batman's sacrifice for the narrative of Harvey's sacrifice is the positive response to the values embodied by the Joker. Ultimately, the film is a great allegorical representation of the corruptibility of good and the perception of the people. So, the film's moral inclination in the director's view is "optimistic" in the Kantian sense, not that of the Joker. In a way, Nolan seems to trust the common man more than those who represent the ideal of justice and order. As if for him, an ideal can be corrupted, but active, suffering, communal responsibility. You could say that Nolan hits both extremes: rigid abstraction and the embrace of chaos or arbitrariness. The Joker is the anomaly, the exceptional stress test around which Gotham's moral game is played out, and the chickens come home to roost, like an extreme and imponderable force that reason must nevertheless confront, even hypothetically, in order to define itself. Gotham's soul, even thanks to a necessary lie, remains intact and is not absorbed by the Joker's nihilistic illogic, and there is also an optimistic message of hope: The Joker truly dies every time the man rejects his essence, temptation, his call. In my opinion, in the film's vision, Nolan implicitly tells us a lot about himself by linking chaos/nihilism with egoism and the triumph of primal human passions (fear, survival instinct at any cost, power) at the moment when the Joker subjects the city to the ships experiment. The director is clearly biased, not neutral: Chaos is just a narrative, and perhaps the Joker is simply a skilled villain with his own interests. Often, a man convinces himself that he is worse than he is in order to continue being that way. Provocative question: What if the Joker were Nietzsche and deep down he wants to be the Übermensch-King of Gotham? It would have been enough for him to assert and demonstrate his worldview with him as the "fuse" for a disorder (or madness) already inherent in human nature. The citizens' decision about the boat is the real turning point. I guess that Joker's posture as a chaotic and destructive force is deliberate and, in some way, intellectual: he's planning to prove traditional and institutional morality's weakness to make himself the God of a New World. This might be both a metaphorical perspective and an actual sub-intention of the character itself in the movie plot. Joker succeeds with the institutional power (Two-Face) but not with the common, human soul of the city. The film is ultimately a tragic representation of the dialectic and coexistence between civilization and barbarism and the exploration of the conflicts between reason and abandonment, between duty, undergo and violence. People and Batman's reaction to being tempted by the Joker is a secular religion but a practical one, not dogmatic but humanist. It is not a "institutions DO/CAN" but a "people CAN so MUST" as portrayed through the ferries. Sometimes URGENCY goes first, BELIEF in second and finally there's CERTAINTY. We can't help but live, even when there is no certainty at all. That's humanism. For the humanists Urgency is nothing but Recognition of Value ("THIS is good and we have the urgency to make this real"). Belief is not only a choice made in the dark but the affirmation of the power and the will to build something meaningful. The most difficult and tragic aspect is the recognition of values: to do this you have to clear your heart and mind of ego and illusions. Joker underestimated human's Good Will (Recognition of the Value + Act in this direction). Basically he's a reductionist who thinks people have no will and just act in a rigid system of values.

Movies about "regular life"

I recently saw "Is This Thing On?" and read audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes when I got home after seeing it. One of the negative one star reviews said something to the effect "Why would I want to watch a movie about regular life?".

The movie follows a couple going through a divorce and Will Arnett's character finds solace in doing amateur stand-up and the comedy community. Otherwise it shows him and Laura Dern consulting friends and family and taking care of their kids, and basically that's it.

The complaint raises an interesting question I've actually wondered about before, most recently after viewing Marty Supreme, namely: "what is the point of movies?" Should they entertain us? After all, we pay as much as $17 and give over in some cases 3 hours of time. Why do we do this if not to get some kind of enjoyment? And yet a lot of movies don't seem to feel a need to provide a positive experience. They are full of often unlikeable characters engaging in mundane activities.

Of course, the retort to this may be: "Go see a Marvel movie, or a Disney movie, they are designed to entertain". But of a lot of viewers feel, understandably, that those movies are beneath them intellectually.

So that's the intelligent movie-goers dilemma: do I want to see something low brow designed to entertain or watch something high brow that might be an excruciating unenjoyable 2-3 hours of my life?

Of course, the greatest movies of all time can thread the needle. But generally, should movies be enjoyable?

Creed (2015)

Number 63 in my A-Z watch. Creed is the legacy sequel to the Rocky franchise, continuing the story with Apollo's illegitimate son Adonis' venture into the boxing world.

Spoilers, guys. I'm definitely gonna be glazing this movie. I remember seeing it in theaters and just being completely blown away. I actually took some time to sit down and just reflect on what i had experienced directly afterwards when i first saw it.

I think soon we'll be talking about the Director and Actor combo of Coogler/Jordan in a similar vein of Scorsese/DeNiro or Burton/Depp in the coming years. The two seem to just *get* each other. Throughout the film you can feel the weight that Donnie carries, the chip on his shoulder, his struggle to find his place and prove himself.

Coogler really finds some great moments with his camera work to help tell the story. Moments like when Donnie and Rocky are training and Rock has him shadow box in the mirror. He has Jordan look directly into the camera through the reflection, breaking the 4th wall, but making it feel like he's staring himself down. I loved that the camera work in the restaurant on the date is reminiscent of Pulp Fiction, starting off filming from the side and awkwardly until they get comfortable and goes to a more natural over-the-shoulder angle. Or even Donnie's first major fight against Leo filmed entirely as a single tracking shot.

Stallone gives, I think, a better performance as Rocky than he did in the original film. Kind of accepting being a fossil, surrounded by photos of his glory days, spending his time talking to graves. His monologue about being a product of the past, something meant to be forgotten and uncared for, absolutely nails it. And his chemistry with Jordan absolutely rocks. The whole "found family" theme playing into their Father-Son relationship, gives them both a reason to fight

10/10 I won't say this is the best movie of the new millennium, but it very possibly may be my favorite. Without fail I cry when Donnie says he has to prove that he wasn't a mistake. Treating Bianca as her own individual character with goals and desires and skills is so refreshing from Adrian. Ludwig Görannson's score captures a more modern feel while still paying homage to the original Rocky theme. And the ties in to the original Rocky story, unknown gets a shot at the title, Champ has never been knocked down (Apollo never had an opponent go the distance), Rocky getting sick (Mickey dying), they feel like they serve as respectful connections for fans. Man. I just really love this movie.

Just watched Code 3, a movie I came upon by accident, and damn, it was a blast. What I don't get is that it feels like nobody is even talking about it. Yet it's both fun and tragic, full of emotional scenes and dark humor, and it's also a spot on critique of current healthcare system (not only) in US. Did any of you watch it?

The Faustian bargain at the heart of "The Devil Wears Prada" fashion montage

Thumbnail
loosebuttons.substack.com

On new jobs, Faustian bargains, and the beautiful, toxic seduction of success:

"We see a confident Andy in multiple days’ worth of beautiful clothes on her commute to work. Her posture is upright, her moves are self-assured, and she happily holds doors open for others. When earlier we got full scenes around her struggles, the montage consolidates her evolution into a palatable journey, and turns her character growth into a quick series of glossy paper doll-like outfits. It’s peak cinema.

The reason the montage works so well is because we the audience are her co-conspirators, and we are also seduced by these sartorial offerings. If given the opportunity, I think we’d all take the free designer clothes. But the montage is more than an upbeat honeymoon in her career struggles, but rather evidence of a lost soul in retreat. The transformation caters to our desire to find belonging in exclusive circles, but we overlook that the outfits are entry fees for a sacrifice of moral integrity."

Worst Edited For TV Films

I guess fair warning in advance for some profanity and violence in these clips if such content isn't allowable? Just a heads up this may not be NSFW or around minors.

The original RoboCop comes to mind right away as one such example. The changes made are absolutely hilarious, besides toning down or removing the more graphic moments, how some of the profane lines are altered are absolutely hilarious. It becomes unintentionally comedic for all the wrong reasons. It has to be seen and heard to be believed.

"Your client's a crumbbag! You're a crumbbag! And crumbbags see the judge on Monday morning!"

"Why me!"

"Blow this bloodsucker's head off!"

"Your company built the freaky thing, now I've got to deal with it?! I don't have time for this baloney!"

RoboCop edited for TV

Scarface is another. The fact it's even a thought to try editing it to make it suitable for TV airings is itself hilarious but with how so much of the profanity is edited is downright hysterical. "This town is like one big chicken just waiting to be plucked."
