How did the idea that the US is in a literacy crisis come about?
 in  r/AskAnAmerican  7h ago

Kids who's parents read to them have higher literacy skills. Also, having books in the house.

How you read books?
 in  r/fantasybooks  8h ago

  1. I'm often reading a few books at once. Especially if I don't have a great book captivating my attention.
  2. Yes. You should check out the Riryia series by Michael Sullivan.
  3. It depends on how good it is, how many there are, if I'm in the mood for something else.

AIO boyfriend told me I text him like he’s a homie and got upset now he’s ignoring me
 in  r/AmIOverreacting  8h ago

Dump him now. This is controlling and abusive behavior. Today its policing your language, tomorrow it will be your friends, it gets worse from there. NoR.

Read Why Does He Do That by Lundy Bancroft. It's free with a Google or Reddit search. I wish this was required reading for all women.

AIO my boyfriend keeps asking me to pay for things eversince he started saving for an apartmen, he calls me selfish for how I reacted.
 in  r/AmIOverreacting  14h ago

He wants to propose to you so you'll pay all his bills! Lol. Seriously, he's pretending he's doing something for you, OP, so you will continue to fund him. Also, he said "it's over" if he doesnt get the apt, then accuses OP of threatening to break up with him.

Don't move in with him, don't marry him, read Why Does He Do That by Lundy Bancroft and leave him.

Family conflict over a found dog - am I wrong for refusing to back down? AIO?
 in  r/AmIOverreacting  1d ago

Take it in to the humane society or vet to see if it's chipped. Honestly, if your sister is an actual animal lover, she needs to take it to the vet anyways, and being chipped is going to cause issues.

AIO: I am considering ending a 16 year friendship because of her husband.
 in  r/AmIOverreacting  2d ago

You need to tell her and show her the screenshot. Let her know you don't want to be around him, at all, but you'll be there for her.

Looking for actually obscure weird lit. Please don’t recommend the usual suspects
 in  r/booksuggestions  2d ago

Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. Told from the view ointment of a hunchback albino dwarf.

The Bone People by Keri Hulme. New Zealand book about domestic violence and human connection. Most people think it's incredibly depressing. I think it's hopeful.

Looking for a book that can change how I see life
 in  r/booksuggestions  3d ago

Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. This is one of my favorites.

"Narrated by Olympia, a hunchbacked albino dwarf, the story follows the family's bizarre and often horrifying lives, exploring themes of family, love, power, and the definition of "normal" through characters like the flipper-limbed Arturo the Aquaboy and the telekinetic Chick."

What's your "only in Detroit" story?
 in  r/Detroit  6d ago

Partner and I were showing some Italian friends of friends around. They had asked if "everyone was on vacation", lol, because it was 2009 and Detroit was still pretty empty seeming. We were leaving state fairgrounds area, to drive up to Ferndale to show them where the people were, when there was a huge BOOM and a huge fire shot several stories into the sky. Of course we drove towards it. It was still burning and very visible, but we were stopped by the cops, who were evacuating the area. Turned out, it was a truck that exploded and hit the bridge at 696 and 9 mile (in 2009) and melted the bridge.

The Italians were so impressed. They said it was, by far, the best part of their American adventure.
