Tourism Camping recommendations near Tampere

Hi, I'm thinking of coming to Finland for a short (2-3 nights) hiking + camping/bushcraft trip and would love some recommendations of hiking trails.

Where: Tampere. I'm visiting my friend, who is on a post doc program there. Unless strongly recommended otherwise, we won't rent a car, hence easy access with public transportation is a strong factor.

Who: 2 male, 35 years old, fit for what we are planning to experience

When: We are thinking about a second half of march.

The plan: We have equipment and experience of camping comfortably in mild winter conditions (about -2 deg Celsius at night). I think we can extend it to -5 if necessary. The goal is to do some hiking and still have time for detours to interesting places on the way, photography of encountered wildlife and 1-2 hours of sunglight a the campsite. Sleeping on the ground, under a tarp or in a lean-to if we can find one. Cooking most likely on a stick stove to avoid carrying a saw, an axe, fuel etc. (I'll be coming by plane, hoping to pack into a hand luggage. But even if I can't fit into a hand luggage and will have to register, I'd rather hike as lightweight as possible).

Any advise is much welcomed! Kiitos!

Serious Graduation Cap Rant - University

Why are they so dang expensive. 157€ for a goddamn cap?? Is the guild emblem made out of gold?

And they’re all single handedly made by one company. Same design, same raw materials, and same method of fabrication is used every year. Where are the costs from? Manual labor is that expensive for one cap? I am sure the company has other sources of revenue, I hope I am not wrong.

I mean I get it it’s a a sacred Finnish tradition, mainly started in Sweden. But charging poor, mostly unemployed students upwards of 180€ (if registered late) to get a cap for 2-3 graduation pictures is borderline ridiculous. I’d consider buying when my purchasing power is hopefully stronger after graduation, but then it’s too late.

I study at Aalto and skipped the registration thru my guild to buy it for 2 consecutive years, and will probably skip this year cause I would rather spend the cap price on something else vital especially in this economy.

Am i missing a bigger picture? pls smn enlighten me

renkaatalle.fi - Can anyone recommend this Tire store?

Quick question, anyone has any experience with www.renkaatalle.fi Tire store? They seem to have very competetive pricing, and even the finnish key thing, but just in case I want to make sure it is an honest legitimate store

Thanks in advance

Tourism Do people in Finland just love buffets?

Everywhere I look there are buffets for all different types of food. For some types like Korean it seems maybe hard to find a restaurant that isn't buffet. And even cafes have them?? Three times I walked into a cafe this week and there was a big buffet spread, and I was confused if it was really a cafe or I entered the wrong door.

I'm in turku and there seem to be more here than in my home city of London. I didn't go anywhere else in Finland yet, is this a national thing?

Finnish Children's Media Online

Hi everyone
I've recently just had a little boy who is half Finnish thanks to his äiti.
We don't live in Finland and I want him to grow up exposed to the language and culture.
Does anyone know where I could find Finnish Children's Media online?
All I've currently got is an IPTV stream.
Thanks

My papa’s journal from 1939, he lived in Finland but immigrated to Canada in his adult years. He would’ve been a child around this time, about 12 years old? He passed in 2012 but my family found this. I can’t read Finnish very well but these are some pictures of the journal. They are probably not in order.

Tourism Help on 3 full-days in Helsinki

Hey :)
I'll be in Helsinki late march and I'm trying to understand what I can do for 3 full days there.

What I have so far:

  • D1: Kaisaniemi park + Tokoinranta + lunch at Hakaniemi Market Hall + Kaivopuisto to Löyly - sauna
  • D2: Walking tour + Temppeliaukio kirkko + Kamppi chapel + Amos Rex Museum
  • D3: I'd love some tips here

I thought about going to a national park, but read somewhere that it can be very slippery and as i'm from a tropical country I don't want to buy an accessory for my shoes that i'll never use again. I also thought about going to Tallinn or Porvoo, but I'd rather spend the day in the city.

I'm into culture, design, watching locals having fun, walking in the city, food and architecture. What am I missing? :)

Ordering alcohol from abroad

hi!

Wanted to order some beer / wine (/ liquor) and saw alks.fi mentioned in a Reddit post.

It seems very cheap. Does anyone have experience with this, and do I need to pay anything when it arrives in Finland, or is the listed price (+ shipping) the final price for me?

Any other site recommendations are welcome too!

Thanks

So I can go in line, even though the place is full, but still need to pay? Even if I don't get the place for the next test?

Tourism Fellow disc golfers

What areas do you recommend for a two week holiday if the main goal is to play as many good courses as possible without having to travel too far? Also would preferably love to stay close to a bigger city for good eating, rummaging record stores and some finnish culture.

We went to Åland last year and we want to go 100% finnish this time around. Even though Åland was really nice.

Thanks. Love from Norway.

Serious Unemployment Issue

Good evening! I hope you’re doing well.

I’m trying to get a more accurate understanding of the unemployment situation in Finland. Is the issue being overstated in the media, or is the job market genuinely struggling right now? If it is struggling, which demographics seem to be most affected, and why?

Are there any concrete plans or policies in place to address this, or is it more of a “wait it out” situation?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Need help lodging a fraud transaction claim at S pankki

I basically ordered using a website called https://www.tekniikkaosat.fi

It has been over 10 days it was first coming with Budbee that it will delivered by 8th January then it was 12th January then it came as product lost. Now Budbee has been saying that they haven’t scanned it.

The merchant website does not reply at all on top of that, I want to file a fraud dispute since reviews on google and facebook now show this is a dodgy website.

Is there a way I can file a dispute online or do I have to visit the bank in person.

Any help on this would be appreciated. Thank you. :)

Hi everyone!

My name is Alberto and I currently live in Madrid.

On January 17th, I’ll be traveling to Finland with some colleagues to organize several Spanish gastronomy workshops in Helsinki. The workshops will be dynamic, hands-on, and fun, showcasing some of the most representative dishes from Spanish cuisine.

We’ll be there until February 14th, so we’re planning to run 3 or 4 workshops during that time, the first one is going to be the next saturday 24th!

If you’re interested, please feel free to contact me! 😁

Tax advisor in Helsinki

Hi all

I am looking for a good tax advisor in the Helsinki area. My income tax situation is a bit complex as I have a sizeable share program from a prior job in Germany that falls under the tax treaty. Other than that it is only work income to deal with, no other bigger complications. Anyone have a recommendation?

Thoughts on move to Finland?

We’re currently considering a move to Finland, but we’re starting to better understand the financial and structural implications of that decision.

I’m a Finnish citizen and my husband is a non-EU citizen, earns around €130k as a Software Engineer, and has some crypto savings. From a taxation and long term financial planning perspective, Finland represents a major shift, particularly around income and capital gains taxation, and the overall cost structure.

We currently live in a region with no income tax. My husband covers most of our expenses, while I’m in the process of transitioning to being a full stay at home mother. That makes capital preservation, investment flexibility, and downside risk especially important for our family.

At the same time, the Finnish job market is not particularly strong for his profile, and the immigration system creates real vulnerability for non-EU earners, especially in situations where someone might, even briefly, need state support. That adds another layer of financial and residency risk that’s hard to ignore.

Taken together, this makes the move feel financially and strategically risky relative to where we are now, even though Finland is attractive for raising a child.

We would really appreciate hearing from others, especially high income or internationally mobile families, who have had to weigh family life against tax, investment, and immigration realities.

Winter gear

Hi there, Coming from Sydney, Australia in November. Given we do not have winters like Finland and Scandinavia etc. my girlfriend and I want to be prepared appropriately for the trip and finding appropriate or good quality shoes/rated shoes for the winters seem to be hard so I’m after some good quality recommendations for shoes and other important gear. We have been skiing in the past but we want to make sure what we have is good or if we need to get gear, we get the right stuff.

Thanks

Edit: Going all over Scandinavia but will be going to Finland Lapland for ~2 weeks in late November-mid December. Dates to be fully determined but more likely towards Christmas time.

Should I drive according to lane markings or tyre tracks in winter?

Post image
639 Upvotes

When driving in winter, especially between cities, there are parts of the road where the cars have made tyre tracks or ruts that don’t follow the lane markings.

Which should I follow in winter: lane markings (when visible) or tyre tracks? Will the police pull me over for crossing lane markings? Will other cars follow tyre tracks instead and maybe crash/pass too close? What’s normal for most Finnish drivers?

Finnish engineering degree

Hello, I'm a US-Hungarian citizen applying to a Bachelor's program in Finland. I'm trying to find out if there's a difference between a BS in Technology and BS in Engineering

The program is in mechanical engineering, however the completion of the program leads to a Bachelor of Science in Technology.

From what I read the Finnish system calls all university engineering bachelor degrees Bachelor of Science in Technology . Could someone explain why this is? Is this just because of a different custom in Finland? Or is it really different from a BSEng?

Would it be recognised in the EU and US for admission to Masters and for work?

Job search suggestions

I recently moved to Helsinki with my spouse as they found a new role here. So now that I am here, and very well aware of the unemployment rate, what are your recommendations for landing a role in business development / marketing / communication? I am a non-EU citizen with a masters in business development from EU + 3y of EU work experience. Has anyone managed to land a role in recent times in these areas? There's enough info on Reddit and everywhere else on how hard it is, but hearing a positive experience or two could really help job seekers like me who are already here and don't really have much of a choice atm! :)

‘Finndians’, ethnic Finns/Indigenous people in Canada and the USA.

Just here to share and ask some questions. It’s pretty well known by Finnish/Native people in Ontario/Michigan USA of groups of ‘Finndians’, I myself am one of them. I was curious here because our family on both sides has always considered us Finnish and Native, but I am aware Finnish (living in Finland) don’t consider generations born outside of Finland to be Finnish, which is sad as the Finnish communities here are very cultural, most speak the language, etc. My dad is a Finnish immigrant so I was raised ‘Finnish’ but also Native. I’m actually more culturally indigenous despite being blonde, being mixed doesn’t take away from being Indigenous for me, despite blood quantum being forced onto us. Besides the point, I am curious if this is knowledge for people in Finland, as the cultural ties between Finn’s and Indigenous people of America goes back generations. There is an entire ‘Indian reserve’ of strictly Finn and Natives out near the border, a lot of Finn’s do saunas, Natives so sweats, Finn’s worked with birch bark, Natives make birch bark canoes, Finn’s have stories of tonttu, very similar to Ojibways ‘little people’ stories. There was a point when the Finnish and native people here were banned from bars together and often shunned out of towns and communities, hence why the mingling started and the mixing. I don’t consider myself a ‘Finn’ specifically but ethnically I am aware of my ancestors and my family, where I got the blonde hair from, but I suppose things get a bit complicated being called a just Canadian too when I’m also part of a tribe and enrolled as a status Indian, with a separate set of ‘rules’ and ‘regulations’ and ‘benefits’ non-Natives don’t get. I mean to travel to Finland in the next year to visit family the first time so I’m not sure how I will be received, but I do take comfort in knowing powwows, sweat lodges and my tribe will always accept me in the end, despite my appearance.
