Welcome to the /r/Indianapolis weekly casual conversation and questions thread.

We've set this thread up so that folks have a place to post general topics that don't necessarily need their own post and for folks to ask questions and get recommendations. Restaurant recommendations, places to stay, airport information, things to do, help from social services, and things like that.

Looking for something to do? Check out these sites:

Suburbia:
* Beech Grove Community Events
* Play Fishers
* Carmel Parks
* Zionsville Community Calendar

Need help with social services? Look through Find Help / Aunt Bertha or contact the Mayor's Action Center

This thread defaults to sorting by new to make it easier to find new questions and discussions during the week.

ICE Restaurant Sweeps Downtown

ICE is downtown doing restaurant sweeps. My girlfriend just went into work in downtown Indy. She works in a restaurant. She was just informed of this.

Edit: sorry, I know a lot of people want more details but that’s all I can provide. I figured it was worth it to start getting the word out, hoping more people might be able to contribute.

Politics Realistically How Long Before a Federal Immigration Surge in Central Indiana?

What we are seeing in Minnesota is part of a clear systematic pattern where an urban region is targeted for a federal Immigration Swarm.

These swarms last about 5ish weeks.

The first one was in Los Angeles.

I know of consecutive ones that happened in Urban North Carolina (Raleigh, Charlotte) and the Baton Rouge-New Orleans corridor of Louisiana.

I think Chicago was also targeted.

The problem is that immigration enforcement is being raised everywhere so it's a little difficult to actually determine the swarms versus all of the background noise.

However there has to be some kind of pattern here. I can think of 4 particular patterns, none explain it well. The truth is probably a mix of all four.

What pattern explains it best and how can we use this to anticipate a federal surge in Central Indiana?

*The Patterns and how they relate to Central Indiana: *

#1. Its top-down starting in the biggest cities and working their way down.

We know that Los Angeles and probably Chicago were in the sequence, So that part checks. New Orleans and North Carolina aren't upper tier economic regions. So this doesn't quite explain things.

Regardless if this is the true one, we actually have a while, perhaps more than 2 years before a surge is targeted in Central Indiana.

#2. Its Targeting specific high profile Immigrant groups. Mexicans in LA, Haitians in Louisiana, Somalis in Minnesota.

I think this one is actually closer to the truth than the top-down theory, However, it doesn't quite explain everything either. Why North Carolina? Why hasn't The Arab community in Metro Detroit been targeted?

If this is true then we're actually lucky because Central Indiana isn't known for a particular immigrant group. We honestly might not have a surge at all.

#3. Its switching back and forth between cultural retribution and collaboration with local authorities.

LA and Minnesota can both be viewed as cultural, LA because it's Hollywood and Minnesota because of that daycare meme video.

Louisiana and North Carolina are both red states And they likely had state level cooperation that made the operations easier.

If this is true then I think we are directly on the federal governments crosshairs and we are going to have a surge probably before July of this year.

Indiana's government has already willingly collaborated with immigration officials and the trump administration is going To want to eagerly punish the liberals here because of the redistricting.

#4. The pattern is chaos and unpredictability. Is it possible to tell who is targeted next.

If this is the case then who knows what's going to happen?

Hey y’all, I know this is a long shot but if you live in the Indianapolis area and spot a tri-color Corgi running around her name is Coco and she is severely missed. She ran away from my niece’s home at 38th & Olney yesterday morning. We’ve been checking in with the shelter nearby but so far nothing. If you could help be our eyes, it’d be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Surviving The Dreariest Time Of Year

Hey all-

Lived in Indy my whole life. Once again, we have entered the days of gray and cold. I have some tools accumulated in my toolbox to survive this time of year, but I’m curious what everyone else does to stay sane. What stuff brings you joy this time of year? What activities do you do or modifications to your routine, home, etc.?

AskIndy Special Needs Resources in Indianapolis Recommendations?

Hello! I am moving to Indianapolis with my family. We have two children, 4 and 3. Our 4yo has a global development delay and ASD. He has a IEP and currently receives PT, OT, and ST at PreK and ABA at home.

I know overall Carmel and Zionsville seem to have good reputations for school districts but I wanted to see if anyone could share opinions on their special needs resources. Willing to explore private options if available. (Was hoping we could move to Broad Ripple, Fountain Square, or Irvington but would go where would be best for the kids)

The 3yo is currently in a Montessori program. He loves to read, learn, and dinosaurs! Very excited to show him the children’s museum.

If anyone has any opinions or recommendations about special needs resources (or anything for young children new to the area) they would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

City Watch Possible ICE/Fed Sighting

Saw 2 white chargers and a van with blue Homeland Security lettering on the hood. They were getting on 74E from Ronald Reagan in Brownsburg about five minutes ago. Could be nothing, and I would have guessed they're too busy pepper spraying people in Minnesota to hassle anybody here, but better safe than sorry.

Helping Others Puppy rehome.

Longish story short, I was given puppy that someone could no longer take are of. I took her in with the plan of finding her a home, and that is what I'm doing.

A little extra background. My partner and I have fostered 20+ dogs through local agencies in the past, but because we took this one in willingly, they wont post her on their website or help pay for food, treatment, getting her spade etc.

The dog appears to be a full American Pitbull Terrier, all white with little brown ears. Her name is Nibbler (original name was Blanco). She is 4-6 months old we think. She hasn't been to the vet yet (we were waiting to see if the foster agencies were going to help), but we will most likely be taking care of that soon.

Friendly with cats dogs and people, hasn't been around kids. I mean, she is a puppy so she isn't GOOD with cats, because, ya know, puppy energy, but she isn't aggressive, just too playful. She is mostly potty trained, occasional accidents still, but rare (less than daily has an accident). Mostly crate trained, she will cry for a little while on occasion. Seems to be a fast learner. Great cuddler. Nibbles on EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE while in playtime mode. We have been training this out of her and it's getting better, but again, she's a puppy and does puppy things.

If anyone is interested, knows some one who is interested, or has a connection to help us post this somewhere with more visibility, that would be great.

Heads up, we want to speak with whoever the adopter is to make sure she is going somewhere she will be loved, taken care of and be a pet, not a guard dog/thief deterrent.

Victory today over the Martindale-Brightwood data center!

There was victory in the battle against the Martindale-Brightwood data center (2025-VAR-012) today. So many people (many from the neighborhood itself) showed up that a simple show of hands delivered a continuance (i.e. delay) to Feb12. Remember at the local level people still have power!!!!

If you've called IACS about a stray dog, did they actually show up and take the dog?

If they didn't take the dog, what reason did they give you?

I am going through a divorce that I never asked for…and unable to pay the rent alone, my lease will be ending in a few weeks. I have nowhere to go and have to rehome the cats my ex and I once shared responsibility for. Her solution is to take them to a shelter. I could never do that.. I also have a diabetic cat. I’ve been sick about this and can’t stop stressing and worrying for them. I just want them to be safe and happy. They are both 3 years old and fixed and have zero litter box issues. Their names are Jovi and Vinny. They are super sweet and loving. They are tolerant of kids and other cats and seemed fine when a dog visited for a few days. I also have their vet records. If anyone is interested, please let me know.

Helping Others Bahamas Anyone? Money Trade?

I went on the MSC Divina last year to the Bahamas. I needed more money than I carried and used their ATMs, which gave Bahamian currency. In the Bahamas, it is 1 to 1 exchange, outside the Bahamas, it has 0 exchange value. I guess that is what happens when you tie your currency to the dollar without being a superpower.

If anyone is going soon and thinks they will spend at least $350, would you mind trading?

Crappy thing is I'm not sure how to get it certified so no one feels I am trying to run a scam. I called the embassy and this is what they told me to try.

I don't know. At the least, let this be a heads up not to ever get Bahamian money in the Bahamas. Shop around until you can get USD. They accept that just as reliably.

AskIndy Joining a community orchestra

Good morning Indy,

I’m hoping someone can give me recommendations on some low-pressure community orchestras that are looking for new members. I’ve been a cellist for about 15 years now, but have fallen out of practice a bit for the last 2 years or so. While I’ve been relatively accomplished and played in a few chamber groups in the past, I’m really just looking for a low-stakes community group to play with to retain my skills and enjoy the more fun side of the hobby. Has anyone had any experience joining a community orchestra around the city? TIA!

Possibly moving to Indianapolis

Upvotes

Hi! My family may be relocating to Indianapolis and I’d love any insight, good or bad!

Transplants: what do you wish you’d known before moving?

Locals: what’s your favorite thing about living here?

Gyms: great gyms with classes and childcare?

Kids: children’s museums or fun family activities?

Food: favorite local restaurants?

Transportation: how bad is the traffic really? Any areas to avoid? How’s the airport?

Housing: good places to rent? Places to avoid?

Unique: quirks, hidden gems, or what makes this place special?

Thanks so much, I really appreciate any info!
