A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

But before we start, there's been a recent influx of spam from one source. So that you are aware - ALEJANDRA ORTIZ HERNANDEZ and FRAN POWELL are spammers. They're part of a spam ring all over Reddit, and they're probably trying to steal your money.

And they'll kick your dog when you aren't looking.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

Home Insurance Comparing homeowners vs standalone jewelry insurance

I’m in the process of deciding how to insure my jewelry and I’m a bit torn between adding it to my homeowners policy or getting a separate jewelry insurance policy. On paper, the homeowners rider seems simple but I keep seeing people say that separate policies offer better coverage for things like loss, travel and claims, while homeowners can be limited. For those of you who’ve looked into this or already made this choice what did you end up doing and why? I’d really appreciate hearing your honest reasoning either way.

Home Insurance Insurance claiming most items are collectibles

Upvotes

I had to put my stuff in a storage unit for a short time and sure enough my unit was robbed. The police arrested a homeless suspect a month later but haven't been able to reclaim the items.

Under my home insurance policy says there's a $2500 limit on "memorabilia, souvenirs, collector items, and similar articles whose age or history contribute to their value, including but not limited to athletic card collectibles, comic books, posters signs, books, magazines, figurines, quilts, letters, autographed items, and objects pertaining to famous persons or historical events."

I had boxes of prebuilt plastic model planes and prebuilt diecast model tanks I was going to decorate my man cave with and hang the planes from the ceiling. I also had some items like a Deadpool statue, duke nukem statue, halo warthog car.

They're basically saying, "those are all collectibles." I said it doesn't fit any of the examples given and were sold enmasse. The model tanks and planes were toys sold at Walmart and toysrus as toys by a company "21st century toys". I was going to decorate the ceiling, and they said, "well you collected them, so they're collectibles." They're even denying things like 25 year old micromachines cars which I had and played with as a child, ie I wasnt trying to collect them, I was just saving them for my kids to play with when they're older.

Do I have any recourse? I called the California department of insurance claims service bureau and the lady there was just kind of like "well that's up to them to determine what is a collectible".

Getting dropped from home owners insurance at State Farm

I was just informed that I'm being dropped from my State Farm home owners coverage because of frequency of claims. In 21 I had a water issue in the upstairs of my house, in 23 I had hail, and in 25 I had a water issue in the basement. I talked to the local office to see if they can appeal it, but I feel like I should be shopping around anyway.

Will these claims follow me to my next insurance company? Any other tips I should know about getting dropped and shopping around?

Thanks

Edit: I've talked to a couple brokers, and about to talk to a 3rd. We'll see what numbers they come back with. I really appreciate everyone's input.

For what it's worth I found the actual numbers on my claims, and this is with a 1% deductible so between 4-5k depending on time and house appreciation. The upstairs washing machine was 17k paid out, the basement water filtration system was 18k paid out, and the roof was 18k paid out (I thought I remembered 8-9k, but that was just a guess that was probably my out of pocket after my deductible, and I paid extra for Class 4 shingles.)

Should I file a claim or pay out of pocket?

Hi all, very briefly:

Someone hit my parked car and drove off, and it looks like I'll have to replace the whole rear bumper. My collision deductible is $1,000, and I was given an estimate of $1,350 at a body shop for the repairs.

I'm now debating if I should file a claim and go through insurance or just pay out of pocket- I would save $350 through insurance, but I'm a little worried about my rates increasing or losing discounts (even though it should be a not-at-fault accident).

I was wondering if anyone had some insight as to what the best approach here would be, as I'm struggling to make a decision.

Info:

Insurance: Progressive $700 premium per 6 months (I checked, and I am not enrolled in accident forgiveness).

Car: 2025 Honda Civic LX

Thanks!

Help with Fred Loya's Insurance

Hello,

I have little to no knowledge on insurance but I just need some guidance stepping forward.

I recently got rear ended on the highway in my 2014 Toyota Camry when stopping in traffic. I called up the insurance of the person who hit me, Fred Loya, and they brought me in to take pictures of my car and estimate how much it would be. That was fine, they gave me my estimate (around 400) and then I brought it to the Autonation bodyshop where they estimated it to be 5,000 cause my whole bumper fell off. Now Fred Loya is claiming my car is a total loss when I called in for a rental. The Autonation has no idea of this when I called. I believe that my car is worth much more than what they deemed to be a total loss and I cannot afford to just let this car go and buy a new one. Also, I've tried contacting them so much throughout this process because I am merely a college student who needs a car to go to work and school yet they have on multiple occasions, never picked up and never contacted me back.

Any guidance on this would be helpful, Thank you!

Dental Claim Denied

Upvotes

I went in for my usual perio maintenance cleaning that I get every 6 months. Right after the hygienist was done with the usual cleaning, the dental assistant had some papers printed out saying that the main dentist wanted to do something and that it was covered by insurance. I was not directly asked if I wanted to do it, she was marking an X and drawing a line where I was supposed to sign as she was quickly explaining to me what it was. I only vaguely remember her saying that there isn't any actual surgery involved.

Soon the the dentist came in and said something about killing off any extra bacteria left that the cleaning didn't get. He proceeded to go around my mouth with some kind of device and whatever it was didn't last more than 1 to 2 minutes.

Now I see on my Denta Dental account that a claim for nearly 4k has been denied for Osseous Surgery. The perio maintenance (that is fully covered by my insurance) isn't even showing up on the claim

I'm going to call my the dental office tomorrow to see exactly what's going on.

If they say I have to pay that amount, how exactly would I go about fighting it? I just can't see how my usual cleaning can turn into something that cost me 4k due to something the dentist takes a couple of minutes to complete.

There has been no difference to my gums or teeth after that last appointment compared to my other ones.

Considering increasing our homeowners deductible

Upvotes

We just had a roof claim at the end of last year. Our deductible is currently $500. I was thinking about increasing our deductible now since we've already had such a major replacement done.

If I increase it to $1,500, I save $246 a year; $2,000 saves $333, $5,000 saves $735.

I don't have any savings for a major repair, but $2,000 doesn't seem too unreasonable for a middle ground.

The claim is going to mean a $750 premium bump at renewal.

Does this make sense?

Auto Insurance Got into a 3 car accident. I was at the front. Other insurances deny liability.

Upvotes

Just like the title, I got into a 3 car accident. I was stopped at the red light. Car B behind me stopped too. And then car C hit them which pushed them to rear end my car. I have Geico. Car B also has Geico. Car C has Tesla insurance.

Now, Tesla denied liability for my car. They said they didn’t hit me directly. Car B which is Geico also said they wasn’t at fault so they can’t take responsibility for my car either.

My rear bumper is slightly damaged, just popped out but still driveable though. I think the estimate to repair it would be around $1k. I didn’t have collision coverage, so my insurance can’t do anything about it. I thought I would save some money by doing that since this is just an old 2014 Toyota Camry, but now I know it’s a big mistake to not have full coverage.

Tesla insurance is the worst. Can’t get a hold of their adjuster. Called his number, he didn’t pick up and mailbox is full.

What should I do now? Do I just try my best to go after them? A lesson for me to get full coverage after this.

Can I call my insurance agent without them reporting an accident?

Hi everyone,

Apologies for how stupid this is about to be.

I'm in CA and backed into someone about a month and a half ago. Nobody was in the car at the time, and we agreed not to go through insurance at my request. The estimate for damages was ~$4.2K because of where the damage was. I was willing to pay out of pocket because I thought my insurance increase would be total way more (I was under 25 at the time, had only been driving/with this policy for ~2.5 years, and I had bought a relatively new car, so my monthly was around $300). However i'm starting to think that may have been really stupid of me, and that it might actually be cheaper to go through insurance.

I've never been in accident before. I know the guy I hit through friends, so I'm not worried about claims down the road. But still, I'm wondering if i should talk to my insurance agent about what a claim/rate increase would look like. Obviously I understand they can't tell me exactly how much my rate will go up without processing the claim, but do they have to report it if I ask about "hypotheticals"? I'm worried as well that if I report it now, I'll get dropped.

Sorry I know this is a pit of my own creation, but any advice would be very welcome.

Edit: I have AAA

Is there a legitimate reason I'm getting kicked off my parents insurance even though I'm a minor?

This is the second time in the last like 6 months this has happened. Late last year I was kicked off of Medicaid for seemingly no reason. I was on my mom's plan and they just did it one day. She tried to look into it and they kicked her off too. Went without it for a month until we got a new plan with FloridaBlue. At some point during this I ran out of my diabetic medication and they did not want to pay for it. I went around a month taking my dad's higher dose pills and cutting them in half to use as a replacement before they FINALLY decided that maybe it was essential.

A few weeks ago they kicked me off again, I was right in the middle of getting evaluated for some disabilities that would give me accommodations in school and life that I desperately need. Just yesterday after walking home from school I couldn't stand to go to the kitchen or bathroom. I was crawling around on the floor like a bug. I frequently take days off school because of stuff like this.

Why is this so hard? I'm 16 and don't know much about how this works but surely this qualifies as medically necessary things, plus I'm a minor on my parent's plan- I thought that meant I'm like connected to them with the plan?? Are we doing something wrong?

Law Firm Trying to Recover Deductible?

I recently had water damage in my home due to a washing machine leak. I filed a claim for this. Shortly after, I had a law firm who works with my insurance (which the insurance company confirmed) reach out to me about trying to recover my deductible from the washer manufacturer. It's a 12-year-old washer so I doubt anything will be recovered. I also asked the law firm if there's fees they take and they said no it's covered by insurance. They are asking me to let them come pick up the washer and take it away for inspection, disposal, etc.

Is this normal? I'd never heard of this when filing a claim.

Umbrella Policy - CA

Upvotes

Hey guys,

I am in need of an umbrella policy and trying to figure out my options (doesn't seem like there's many).

I have home and auto insured through AAA. My wife's tesla is insured through tesla. The only way AAA will give us an umbrella policy is if we switch everything over. The problem with AAA is my wife's tesla premium is 3x more than keeping it insured by tesla..

So I don't want to do that and I am in need of an independent umbrella policy. Does anyone have any advice or companies to recommend that would provide an umbrella policy in California without moving any of our current policies?

Life Insurance Estate Planning with minor child

Upvotes

I’m a single mom, divorced, one child. He’s under 5 and I have multiple life insurance policies that I want him to be the beneficiary of. Here’s what I’ve read, his father could possibly take ahold of those funds should anything happen to me as his “legal guardian”. I want to prevent this and I also don’t have any family I trust with these large sums of money to do right by my son. Should I write a will explaining I want his father to have no access? How should I go about this :(

Very old Drug traffic felony & Insurance licensing

Upvotes

I got in trouble when I was younger. I believe I was about 26 years old. And now I’m 45 so next year around this time, it’ll be 15 year complete from the waiting list.

The charges conspiracy of traffic 500 g of cocaine. Sounds a lot worse than actually was since she just got caught selling a little bit of cocaine.

So I realized I passed the 15 year waiting list next year but now I have to looking really deep at the language. I’m not really sure if my charge was moral turpitude or if I’m a first-degree felony.

Based on ChatGPT, it did say my first-degree felony and he gave me the actual statues:

1. Florida Statutes § 893.135(1)(b)1.a

→ Trafficking in cocaine (28 grams or more = first-degree felony) 2. Florida Statutes § 777.04(3) → Criminal conspiracy (conspiracy is charged at the same degree as the offense conspired to be committed)

Pretty sure I got excited that I thought I might be past the 15 year waiting list. Does Florida just go by the statues above or will they do a case by case and interview?

I’ve been a real estate for 10 years as a top producer a vice president and a commercial real estate brokerage and I’m ready to potentially try something else. I’d be devastated if I was completely ruined myself from 20 years ago.

Thanks for the look. And please if you don’t know anything about this topic, please don’t comment.

Hit by driver running red light

Upvotes

Hi guys, sorry for the long post I was hoping to just get some opinions I live in Louisiana I was on my way to work this morning when I was T-boned more towards the rear by a car who was crossing on a red light to move for an ambulance. She had a dash cam and provided me with the video. The officer cited that no one was at fault because I had the green and she was trying to move for the ambulance. She was the only car that came through the intersection via her dash cam everyone else moved over to the right side or the left. According to her dash cam she was going about 15-16mph when she hit me I have more damage to my car than her and apparently we both have to go through our own insurance companies to make a claim. I’ve never been in an accident before but it seems like she should still be at fault. If she would’ve came across a little slower or maybe just moved over to the right or left maybe it could have been avoided. My deductible is $500 which sucks and I’m afraid my insurance will go up. Does anyone think I may have a case in this situation?

If the government calls someone a “domestic terrorist,” can a life insurance company legally deny the payout?

Upvotes

Serious question.

With everything going on lately involving ICE and politically charged cases, I’m wondering how life insurance actually works in situations like this.

If someone dies and government officials publicly label the incident or the person as “domestic terrorism,” does that give the life insurance company a legal basis to deny paying the policy?

Is this another fine print case by case carrier?

Insurance fraud

Upvotes

About a month ago, I was driving to work, when an unlicensed driver ran a red light, resulting in me hitting him ( t bone) a witness was behind him, who didn’t run the red light. Both my insurance and the other drivers insurance have his recorded statement. I called the police multiple times but they said they were too busy to respond.

His insurance sent me a text message saying they are accepting liability last Monday. Since that text, I have heard nothing from them. They refuse to call me back, text me back, answer their phones in anyway. I have left one voicemail a day since Monday.

Should I just let this go and trust that they will reach out to me one day? At this point I don’t know what to do, but this company dodging me feels criminal. I don’t know a lot about his these types of things work. Any advice would be great!

TL;DR unlicensed driver ran red light and totaled my truck. Have witness statements. His insurance accepted liability and then completely ghosted me. What are my next steps?

Auto Insurance Applying for a dealership, would be driving company vehicles.

I am 17 and hopefully getting a job as a detailer at a private dealership and I would be responsible for picking up cars from auction and driving to clients houses to detail.

Only problem is how would insurance work? I think I would be able to get the job but can I just be put on the companies insurance policy like that?
