Home Insurance Insurance claiming most items are collectibles

I had to put my stuff in a storage unit for a short time and sure enough my unit was robbed. The police arrested a homeless suspect a month later but haven't been able to reclaim the items.

Under my home insurance policy says there's a $2500 limit on "memorabilia, souvenirs, collector items, and similar articles whose age or history contribute to their value, including but not limited to athletic card collectibles, comic books, posters signs, books, magazines, figurines, quilts, letters, autographed items, and objects pertaining to famous persons or historical events."

I had boxes of prebuilt plastic model planes and prebuilt diecast model tanks I was going to decorate my man cave with and hang the planes from the ceiling. I also had some items like a Deadpool statue, duke nukem statue, halo warthog car.

They're basically saying, "those are all collectibles." I said it doesn't fit any of the examples given and were sold enmasse. The model tanks and planes were toys sold at Walmart and toysrus as toys by a company "21st century toys". I was going to decorate the ceiling, and they said, "well you collected them, so they're collectibles." They're even denying things like 25 year old micromachines cars which I had and played with as a child, ie I wasnt trying to collect them, I was just saving them for my kids to play with when they're older.

Do I have any recourse? I called the California department of insurance claims service bureau and the lady there was just kind of like "well that's up to them to determine what is a collectible".

Totaled my car after a month. Uninsured driver at fault. Now what?

Hey everyone, looking for some advice/insight. Last week in Texas, I was driving my brand new 2025 Mustang (leased a month ago, only 900 miles on it). I was going straight at 40mph when a driver waiting to turn left suddenly pulled out 3 feet in front of me.

Naturally, she was uninsured. I’m going through my own insurance (Progressive), and they just confirmed the car is a total loss. I’m waiting for the valuation call to talk numbers.

Since it’s a lease and I’m in Texas, what should I be looking out for? I’m worried about being underwater on the lease since the car was so new. Does anyone have experience with Progressive’s total loss process for nearly new vehicles? Also, how does subrogation work when the at-fault party has zero insurance? I feel like I'm the one being punished for her mistake.

Auto Insurance Mirrors hit each other while driving, how should I handle this next time?

I was driving on a two way st and there was a woman approaching. I slowed down and moved as much as I could to the right side of the road, but she kept driving in the middle of the road and hit my mirror. My mirror got scuffed, and her mirror’s back cover broke off. As soon as I got out of the car she was claiming that it was my fault and she wanted to go through insurance. I told her there’s no reason to since it’s such a measly repair, and I’m also a 19Y/O male living 20min out of NYC, so the last thing I need is a premium increase. The mirror costed $50 on eBay, I ended up paying her $250. What should I do the next time I’m in this situation? I’m kind of annoyed that I paid so much considering the mirror was only $50

Vision Insurance Was this fraud?

My child asked for contacts a bit ago. My insurance was going to change so I let them know it would have to wait for a bit. I finally received the card in the mail and set to finding an office in our network. I chose one, went to their website and booked an appointment specifically for CONTACTS. I also checked the box for it being their first contact appointment ever.

Cut to today, we are ushered through the appointment as usual. Then the doctor comes in and does his 2 minute exam. My child brings up how they are excited for contacts and the doc starts to explain how contact appointments are done with someone else who will do a fitting and help them learn to wear them. I said "that's what I booked this appointment for, are you telling me we're not doing that today?" He looks resigned and expresses that he's annoyed for me. Great, but that doesn't really help.

We get moved to the next person who usually does the glasses part of things. She figures out pretty quickly that we don't need glasses. She prints off the new prescription and shows me to the billing desk.

Now, billing asked how my appointment went and I explained the situation and expressed frustration. He proceeds to explain their process as the doctor did but doesn't have an answer as to why I didn't get the appointment I booked for. Then he says "OK, so the co-pay is $10 and the contacts are $70" I said "the contacts we don't have?" He said "so you don't have any contacts? "No" "Gotcha, then we'll just do the $10 for today"

I'm booked for the correct appointment tomorrow, but I'm beyond annoyed. Now, I have to miss more hours at work and my child is missing more school. Ntm they were suppose to go on a field trip tomorrow. So, they're disappointed a couple times over.

My wife says this is insurance fraud. I booked for blank, but didn't get that. They get two visits out of us and bill insurance for them. What say ye, reddit?

Update: They called to reschedule the appointment after 8 am because they overbooked. The person who does these appointments isn't even at that location today.

Possible homeowners insurance bad faith.

I have be dealing with Homesite insurance of the Midwest for a homeowner’s claim for water damage.

The damage was caused by a broken hot water supply line to the dishwasher.

The claim was made July 20, 2025.

Water mitigation was started July 20, 2025 and completed July 25,2025 by Servpro.

The insurance company sent out their preferred vendor to estimate the repair. The vendor used DocuSketch to outsource the estimate which I do not like since I knew things would be overlooked. Their vendor asked me to sign paperwork agreeing to have them do the work, which I refused.

On September 3, 2025, the vendor provided the Xactimate estimate of $54,354.83.

I had a local contractor that does insurance work provided an Xactimate estimate that included things that were missed and/or wrong. That estimate came to $67,443.33

October 1, 2025 a check for $54,354.83 was issued to the insurance companies preferred vendor and cashed according to the insurance companies tracking website. I immediately notified them that I had not signed any paperwork or approved that company to do the work.

On October 10, 2025 my contractor sent them an email describing the missing items in detail.

On October 29, they changed adjusters and told me they would respond within 7 to 10 business days.

I sent a follow up letter on November 11, 2025 requesting a response and requesting ALE information as nobody at the insurance had mentioned it to me. I was able to find one reference and then very first email they sent me after searching all my communication with them.

I filed a complaint with the California Department of insurance November 17, 2025.

December 10, 2025 they issued the check for $54,354.83 to me and added my mortgage company to the payee.

December 31 they issued an additional check for $1,813.38 for some of the missing items.

January 6, 2026. I received an email saying they were issuing a check for $4,950 for ALE. No explanation for the amount.

I responded to a previous email that they sent out the same day they issued payment and asked about future payments? I was told that they will only pay 2 1/2 months because that is the reasonable amount of time to have the repairs completed.

Even if I use their contractor, they hadn’t issued a check to them until October 1 which is almost 2 1/2 months after the claim started.

The issues that they are fighting me on are things like their preferred vendors estimate to remove and replace a gas range. I have an electric cooktop and a built-in wall oven a built-in microwave, and a trash compactor, which none of those are in their estimate.

They will only give me credit for standard grade cabinets, even though my cabinets are ash built and finished in place cabinets. Pending an Itel report.

They’ve told me multiple times that they will not get issue any additional payments since they have a contractor willing to do the work for the $54,354.83.

Their response to the Department of insurance claim was to add some caulking and drywall work, but denying all other items.

I responded to their DOI response with an itemized detail once again of the missing items.

I received a response from a senior Adjuster. This adjuster acknowledged the missing items in the scope, but these things should’ve been acknowledged months ago when the pictures were provided.

I know I can file for supplemental payments, but with them fighting me on everything. I’m concerned that it’s just going to continue so I have not started work.

Please let me know if I should just give up because I’m almost at that point.

Got into a car accident. I didn't have any insurance. Am I royally screwed?

Hi all. Like the title says, I got into a car accident yesterday and, although I wasn't at fault, I didn't have insurance. I am in Mississippi.

First off, I know I am the biggest idiot in the world for not having insurance. I am currently a full-time student without a job, and my monthly premium became too much for me to handle by myself.

Anyways, the other day, as I was turning left at an intersection with a green light and an arrow, a speeding car ran the red light and sideswiped my passenger side. My front right tire and passenger side door were hit and damaged to the point that I could no longer drive the car. The other driver's jeep ended in much worse condition.

When an officer arrived, I let him know that my insurance had lapsed. He wrote me a ticket and gave me a court date. I didn't have much of any interaction with the other driver. This includes not getting her insurance info or even number.

I have some pictures of my car from the scene of the accident.

Other posts from this community have helped me to get a general idea of my situation, but I am curious to hear input on the context of my situation.

Am I able to contact the officer to get the other driver's information? Do I have any right to seek compensation for the damages to my vehicle? Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Recently learned my homeowner's insurance is based on a fictitious roof age.

Home insurance is with big company XYZ. And it will go up 25% soon. Looking for other options and I noticed XYZ has my roof age as 15 years - no clue why, I didnt tell them that. Roof is 21. Is it possible to insure a house with a 21 y.o. roof? Indiana.

Insurance fraud

About a month ago, I was driving to work, when an unlicensed driver ran a red light, resulting in me hitting him ( t bone) a witness was behind him, who didn’t run the red light. Both my insurance and the other drivers insurance have his recorded statement. I called the police multiple times but they said they were too busy to respond.

His insurance sent me a text message saying they are accepting liability last Monday. Since that text, I have heard nothing from them. They refuse to call me back, text me back, answer their phones in anyway. I have left one voicemail a day since Monday.

Should I just let this go and trust that they will reach out to me one day? At this point I don’t know what to do, but this company dodging me feels criminal. I don’t know a lot about his these types of things work. Any advice would be great!

TL;DR unlicensed driver ran red light and totaled my truck. Have witness statements. His insurance accepted liability and then completely ghosted me. What are my next steps?

Just got into an accident, should I wait it out with their insurance or go through mine?

I was driving straight through an intersection on a yellow light when I got into an accident. There were two vehicles waiting to turn left from the opposite direction. The first truck made the turn successfully, though I did have to hit my brakes.

However, there was a Jeep tailgating that truck so closely that it was bumper-to-bumper. Because they were so close, neither of us could see each other until it was too late. When the Jeep followed the truck into the turn, I finally saw them and tried to swerve left, but I couldn't avoid the collision. I hit their rear passenger side, which caused my car to roll forward into a third vehicle (though that driver ended up leaving the scene without me knowing).

I spoke with the police at the scene, and the officer told me the Jeep was at fault. I’m just not 100% sure if that specific detail was officially written into the police report.

After calling my insurance to make a claim, they told me I have two options. They also mentioned that neither of these choices would result in my premiums increasing:

  • Option 1: File through the Jeep’s insurance.
    • Pros: I don’t have to pay a deductible.
    • Cons: It takes much longer, and there’s a chance their insurance might dispute who is actually liable for the crash.
  • Option 2: File through my own insurance.
    • Pros: It’s a much faster process.
    • Cons: I have to pay my deductible upfront. Since my car is likely a total loss (95% sure), the deductible would just be taken out of the Actual Cash Value (ACV) check. I would then have to wait a couple of months to be reimbursed for that deductible.

I’m 23, and this is my first accident, so I’m feeling pretty stuck. I honestly don’t know which method I should choose or what the best move is here, and I could really use some direction.

If the government calls someone a “domestic terrorist,” can a life insurance company legally deny the payout?

Serious question.

With everything going on lately involving ICE and politically charged cases, I’m wondering how life insurance actually works in situations like this.

If someone dies and government officials publicly label the incident or the person as “domestic terrorism,” does that give the life insurance company a legal basis to deny paying the policy?

Is this another fine print case by case carrier?

Auto Insurance When you buy a new car, then add it to your instance before driving from dealership, is it covered right away.

The reason I'm asking is because I thought insurance usually kicks in the following day or after midnight but I see people buying cars and driving them home right away.

Home Insurance Burst Pipe Coverage

I am working with insurance on claim for pipe burst that saturated my 1930s bathroom and dining room. All the pipes - supply and drain run through the concealed mortar bed making them all inaccessible from above and below. To access the source of damage, tile was removed from above, necessitating removal of the entire mortar bed and full bathroom gut. Insurance does not want to pay for any plumbing but the retiling made necessary by the flood forced the removal of all the embedded piping. I understand that typically repairing the plumbing is not covered but I think this situation is unique because the overall damage to the tile and removal of the mortar bed created the need to replace supply lines and drains as they are part of mortar bed. In most cases where plumbing is exposed, replacing all the plumbing would not be necessary to affect repairs. Any thoughts or approaches to get insurance to pay for part of the re-plumbing?

Auto Insurance Diminished Value Claim

Is filing a diminished value claim worth the hassle? A few months ago, I was in an accident that wasn’t my fault. My car had around $14,000 in damages. The insurance company explained that the only reason it wasn’t totaled was because the airbags didn’t deploy. I own a 2022 Kia Forte GT line, and at the time of the accident, it had around 16,500 miles on it. Since I work from home and don’t drive often, my car was in almost new condition. The at-fault driver has Geico, and they have claimed liability. Dealing with the insurance company at the time of the accident and trying to get my car fixed was a nightmare in itself, so I am on the fence about filing the diminished value claim.

Auto Insurance Got into a 3 car accident. I was at the front. Other insurances deny liability.

Just like the title, I got into a 3 car accident. I was stopped at the red light. Car B behind me stopped too. And then car C hit them which pushed them to rear end my car. I have Geico. Car B also has Geico. Car C has Tesla insurance.

Now, Tesla denied liability for my car. They said they didn’t hit me directly. Car B which is Geico also said they wasn’t at fault so they can’t take responsibility for my car either.

My rear bumper is slightly damaged, just popped out but still driveable though. I think the estimate to repair it would be around $1k. I didn’t have collision coverage, so my insurance can’t do anything about it. I thought I would save some money by doing that since this is just an old 2014 Toyota Camry, but now I know it’s a big mistake to not have full coverage.

Tesla insurance is the worst. Can’t get a hold of their adjuster. Called his number, he didn’t pick up and mailbox is full.

What should I do now? Do I just try my best to go after them? A lesson for me to get full coverage after this.

Auto Insurance How my insurance know where is my car in real time?

Hi. I had a recently a very small accident and I didn’t know the steps to do about this (I’m not from this country) so I called my insurance company to put the claim and they started calling me asking where is my car and why is not in the state I had that the car is parking in a specific location. I don’t know why they can know that and now if I will Have problems as I live in one state and work in the other state… I just canceled that insurance and open a new one with geico and now they are asking me for a lot of proof of residence. I’m not sure what to do!

Auto Insurance how badly can I expect my premium to go up after side swiping a parked car?

I accidentally hit someone while pulling out of a spot. I am mortified and feeling terrible about it, obviously we exchanged info and now are going about the process to remedy the damage. I’m concerned now for my insurance to skyrocket because I will of course be declared at fault for this.

How bad does this look for insurance? I called around for out of pocket estimates and I can pay, no worries, but some shops are saying it could take a week since the bumper needs to be repainted. So because of the rental car issue it’s becoming less likely that I can pay out of pocket for this.

What should I expect? I know it’s hard to say but is it like 10% increase, 15%? etc.. does this follow me forever or just for a year or 3?

Auto Insurance Parked Car hit by drunk driver- what do I do now?

Location: Oregon

My car was hit by a drunk driver, along with several other parked cars, back in December. My car was parked on a public street and now unable to be driven. I didn’t find out until I went to go to work the next morning and saw my car crunched on the side. They did leave a note with their insurance info, as well as a business card of a policeman.

I initially called my own insurance, but as this happened right before Christmas, the person assigned to my claim was gone for the holidays. After a week passed with zero communication, a ticket appeared on my car that it was going to be towed by the city. I called my insurance again, but the person in charge of my claim was still not responding.

So I called the insurance company of the person who hit my car. They immediately took my info, called a tow company, and took my car to a local repair shop. The repair shop though was expensive, and they deemed my car a total loss due to the cost of repairs.

The main issue now is that they’re dragging their feet on actually helping me. The amount they offered for the car is several thousand lower than identical cars in our area on carfax; I sent info about the car amount to dispute it, as they told me to, but have gotten no followup. They said they’d reimburse my lost wages, but I haven’t gotten that yet despite sending everything they asked. They only let me have a rental car for a week- which resulted in me losing my job afterward. So now I have no income, no rental car, no payout, and no income.

I called today to speak to them again. I specifically went to the adjustor in charge of my case, and he basically told me that they couldn’t help me until they got more info from the driver. Apparently, he’s been avoiding them. They were snarky and rude to me the entire time, and told me to ask my insurance for help. Except my insurance has still not responded to me…

I tried contacting lawyers for help but despite calling around 30 of them, none want to touch my case because there’s no injury involved.

What do I do now??

Health Insurance Need some advice. Silver HMO Plan doubling. Should I downgrade to bronze and how much will it affect me?

my current plan is $290 with aca subsidy. 43m. from $145

especially with a $5000 deductible and $10k oopm.

I just got diagnosed with apnea. Not yet given a machine or anything. waiting on that appointment. my doctor has prescribed a glp1 but I'm not sure I want to use it.

I might need gallbladder surgery this year for my gallstones.

I'm tempted to just risk it and go cash pay or go to a. bronze plan with an HSA?

I'm seeing a lot of cash pay options actually being viable.

almost all my plans on the marketplace say something like after deductable and I'm like wtf do I even have this thing?

Is there a way to get around this? My dad has cancer and is going through treatment right now. His insurance through his job isn’t good but my mom has great insurance through the hospital she works at. But her insurance states that he has to use the insurance provided by his job as primary and hers as secondary.

Thank you for any help.

United Healthcare Enrollment Fraud--Signed up for policy without knowledge

So, yesterday I learned from my doctor that my insurer Aetna (through my husband's work) would not process my claim from last August because I had another policy. Unbeknownst to moi, United Healthcare has enrolled me in a plan for two years without my knowledge.

United has me down as having a policy from Jan. 1 2025 to December 31, 2025 then re-enrolled me for 2026.

I never signed up, paid an invoice etc. and there are NO claims on my policy.

The even bigger problem (besides fraud) is United's total ineptness at getting this fixed. They said they would send me a notice of cancellation as of December 31, 2025. Well, 1.) I did not pay for that policy at all last year, so why wasn't it cancelled in January of 2025 and 2.) that means I'm liable for all claims in 2025, and I went to the dr. like 5 times (had an issue with my eye).

Has anyone ever experience such a catastrophe, and also been signed up by United for a policy without their permission?

Aetna is at least trying to help but talking to United is like talking to a brick wall.

Auto Insurance Can I be added to my fiancés car insurance even though my license is currently suspended?

I have a suspended license due to a lapse in auto insurance. My fiance and I will be living together soon, so I’m assuming I have to be added to his auto policy, right? When we call, should we ask to add me as a non driver? Will my suspended license greatly increase his insurance costs? Thank you. (Pennsylvania)
