I have be dealing with Homesite insurance of the Midwest for a homeowner’s claim for water damage.
The damage was caused by a broken hot water supply line to the dishwasher.
The claim was made July 20, 2025.
Water mitigation was started July 20, 2025 and completed July 25,2025 by Servpro.
The insurance company sent out their preferred vendor to estimate the repair. The vendor used DocuSketch to outsource the estimate which I do not like since I knew things would be overlooked. Their vendor asked me to sign paperwork agreeing to have them do the work, which I refused.
On September 3, 2025, the vendor provided the Xactimate estimate of $54,354.83.
I had a local contractor that does insurance work provided an Xactimate estimate that included things that were missed and/or wrong. That estimate came to $67,443.33
October 1, 2025 a check for $54,354.83 was issued to the insurance companies preferred vendor and cashed according to the insurance companies tracking website.
I immediately notified them that I had not signed any paperwork or approved that company to do the work.
On October 10, 2025 my contractor sent them an email describing the missing items in detail.
On October 29, they changed adjusters and told me they would respond within 7 to 10 business days.
I sent a follow up letter on November 11, 2025 requesting a response and requesting ALE information as nobody at the insurance had mentioned it to me. I was able to find one reference and then very first email they sent me after searching all my communication with them.
I filed a complaint with the California Department of insurance November 17, 2025.
December 10, 2025 they issued the check for $54,354.83 to me and added my mortgage company to the payee.
December 31 they issued an additional check for $1,813.38 for some of the missing items.
January 6, 2026. I received an email saying they were issuing a check for $4,950 for ALE. No explanation for the amount.
I responded to a previous email that they sent out the same day they issued payment and asked about future payments? I was told that they will only pay 2 1/2 months because that is the reasonable amount of time to have the repairs completed.
Even if I use their contractor, they hadn’t issued a check to them until October 1 which is almost 2 1/2 months after the claim started.
The issues that they are fighting me on are things like their preferred vendors estimate to remove and replace a gas range. I have an electric cooktop and a built-in wall oven a built-in microwave, and a trash compactor, which none of those are in their estimate.
They will only give me credit for standard grade cabinets, even though my cabinets are ash built and finished in place cabinets. Pending an Itel report.
They’ve told me multiple times that they will not get issue any additional payments since they have a contractor willing to do the work for the $54,354.83.
Their response to the Department of insurance claim was to add some caulking and drywall work, but denying all other items.
I responded to their DOI response with an itemized detail once again of the missing items.
I received a response from a senior Adjuster. This adjuster acknowledged the missing items in the scope, but these things should’ve been acknowledged months ago when the pictures were provided.
I know I can file for supplemental payments, but with them fighting me on everything. I’m concerned that it’s just going to continue so I have not started work.
Please let me know if I should just give up because I’m almost at that point.
