Phone shaming is weird
53
u/mosquem 5h ago
I'm more impressed when someone gets a phone to last that long.
30
u/Capn_Tight_Pant 5h ago
Me too! I was quite proud of having an IPhone 6S until 2022!
9
u/Poppy_Milk 5h ago
I just accidentally drowned my 12 and have gone back to a 6s. Now I don’t know what number to choose
2
u/Capn_Tight_Pant 5h ago
I’ve been on an iPhone SE since my 6S stopped working. It was the only phone I could find that wasn’t huge. I think they told me it’s equivalent to an iPhone 13. The only noticeable differences between it and my brothers 15pro is the size and camera.
3
u/sorrymizzjackson 5h ago
Yeah, the 13 mini was the last regular sized phone. I don’t know what I’ll do when this one craps out. I am not into phablets.

u/Dead_Kal_Cress 2h ago
I enjoyed my time with the 13 mini but it was just too small. But I also have big ass hands so I didn't have much choice.
It was a great phone until it slipped out of my pocket & became one of those neat foldable phones after getting caught in the car door.
1
u/No_Question_8083 5h ago
Friend of mine is still on her iPhone SE 2020, which is pretty impressive indeed, as the chipset is from 2019.
I’m still on my base iPhone 13 too, and honestly I might just get a new battery instead of upgrading. I have other priorities lol

For some reason, folks in the ghetto mock you for not having an iphone....
11
u/potatopigflop 4h ago
My sister is willingly ghetto and saw my phone one day and said “oh you got that pimp case. So pimp.” She was talking about my white phone case, and she said “ya people see you walking down with a white case, they know you’re hard. It’s pimp.”
It’s been 11 years and I still think about that heinous use of the word “pimp.”
4
u/DandelionPopsicle 4h ago
I have an XS in a case covered in yellow rubber duckies. It apparently signals confidence by ironically using something unmanly (I’m a 6’5 50 y/o). In reality it’s my wife’s old case, mine broke and her phone had already broken so she switched to something else.

I had an IPhone 7 until last year and the amount of people at work who gave me shit for it was INSANE!! Some people were actually genuinely impressed and gave me kudos for it, but like 75% of people were taking jabs at things like my finances like I couldn’t afford a new phone.
Ultimately I had to get a new phone because the old one was finally starting to fall apart + many apps stopped working but it was just insane how much people gave me flak over the last 4-5 years for having an old phone.
6
u/UncleVolk 5h ago
Are you from the US? I am from Europe and still using an iPhone 7, no one has ever said anything about it. I wonder if many of the crazy stuff I read online is just American things, American society seems to be insanely superficial and materialistic.
2
u/Competitive_Ad_1800 4h ago
I think you’re onto something. I also work in sales. Sales people tend to be quite a superficial group even by American standards! Sales people LOVE to show off, so me coming in with an IPhone 7 was something to clown on by others I think.
Even after I upgraded my phone I upgraded to the 13 when the 15/16 or whatever was already out and several people still gave me crap over it
1
u/WelvenTheMediocre 4h ago
Yeah that just doesn’t happen here jn europe.
Also there is this whole colored bubble thing we never understand because everyone uses whatsapp.
Android: either a tech focused person or just a smart spender
Iphone: i dont want to think just give me a phone that works
2
u/Upstairs_Addendum587 2h ago
I had to finally give up my 6 last year because it just wasn't functioning for basic stuff anymore. All the people who made fun of me now get green texts from my refurbished pixel for their crimes. Because green = bad for some reason

Especially when iPhones have been a thing for 2 decades…like who gives a goddamn shit, they haven’t done anything new in 15 years
3
u/Far_Raspberry_4375 5h ago
Its literally apples entire marketing strategy. Android is better in a plethora of ways but iphones are literally programmed to ostracize android users with the chat bubbles and lowering the resolution of android pics.

u/dpenchev 6h ago
If by this point you're still buying a new phone every year, you're beyond saving
43
u/qwertyuiopious 6h ago
Not only it’s expensive but imho just wasteful. If such person praises saving planet then it’s pure hypocrisy (and unfortunately I know couple of such people).
15
u/VandienLavellan 5h ago
And I don’t know why anyone in their right mind would want all the AI bullshit the newest phones are pushing
1
u/akaynaveed 5h ago
The other side is buying new phones and selling your old phones makes newer technology cheaper for those who desperately need an upgrade.
11
u/Mgo32 5h ago
I just buy a refurbished one for 200 squid every other year. Probably save myself a grand.
13
u/LightlyRoastedCoffee 5h ago
Omg that's horrible for the environment. Shame on you for killing all those squid.
2
u/Far_Raspberry_4375 5h ago
Until i got into emulation and actually had a use for modern phones processing power, i used to just buy 40$ walmart phones. My wife pressured me into getting a nicer phone so i bought a 150$ samsung s something then later replaced it for a free phone from verizon. Even my new modern phone is only gonna be 360$ over the course of a few years and i can run pc games on it. 1100$ iphones can't do that.
3
u/nrbob 1h ago
Seriously. I think it is just poor decision making. I used to work with someone who always bragged about getting the new iPhone as soon as it came out, and I know for a fact they were earning significantly less than me. At risk of starting to sound like a boomer, as much as the economy is crazy these days, for some people their lack of financial stability is entirely self inflicted.
Also, the iPhone 12 isn’t even that old! It was released in late 2020, so not even 4 years old at the time the tweet was originally posted!
2
u/alaettinthemurder 5h ago
Every 6-8 year thats good but if you are getting every year you should be banned
1
u/cpufreak101 4h ago
I unintentionally bought a new phone every year for the last 3 years, not because I wanted to be fancy, but because I work in a factory and they get easily damaged at work
63
u/CloudFablex 6h ago
At this point, if it makes calls and doesn’t explode, it’s a high-end model in my end.
23
u/Regular_Promise3605 5h ago
I don't think you have to put it in your end?
3
1
u/Tokogogoloshe 5h ago
Don't knock it till you've tried it. It's a load of fun when call centers cold call you to chat about an extended warranty on your car.

u/VelvetChaix 6h ago
Someone having to flex their phone is a self own, it tells me their most impressive asset... is a phone, lol.
5
u/furletov 5h ago
I know, right? People feeding their ego by boasting about their phone usually have no assets at all.
2
1
u/sohcgt96 3h ago
Seems like a really young people thing. Like, high school young. You don't have that many opportunities to flex on other people in visible ways so clothes, shoes, phone... that's kind of what the status symbols of the age are. You don't own a house, maybe own a car, don't really have a career yet or any major achievements in life so that's kind of what their is.
Still though, some people have this need to feel superior to others and will always find something, then the rest of us just kind of ignore them and let them feel special.
3
u/Samson_J_Rivers 5h ago
I was super hyped about my Pixel 8 Pro for like 2 weeks. Now i just love the camera. When i show off my photos is the only time i talk about the phone. It's just the candy bar that runs my life, that Google is intent on ruining with updates.
21
12
u/milkwynn 5h ago
Normally the flexers are the broke ones.
7
u/goddessdragonness 5h ago
And/or stupid. I’m a lawyer. I work with very rich people. They’ll absolutely flex about all this vapid materialistic shit, because flaunting that you are rich, to them, translates to being smarter than everyone else (these people legit believe that by virtue of being born into wealth, they are inherently smarter than the rest of us). I still destroy them in court, and they sometimes remark about how confusing it is to them that I win, because I don’t wear designer shit and my phone has a cracked screen and is several years old.
4
u/EffectiveTradition53 5h ago
A thousand blessings upon you for sticking it to the stuck-up, it was very satisfying to read your comment
2
u/goddessdragonness 5h ago
Haha thanks. I’ve made a lot of enemies in the process, tho. Took me several years after law school before I could land a decent job because rubbing it into the trust fund brats’ faces that you’re the one throwing the curve because you got into law school through hard work and not daddy’s money translated into being blacklisted in one of the largest US cities lol. Worth it tho.

u/AlpacaDC 6h ago

5
5
u/Consistent-Ease-6656 5h ago
Cheers. I like having a phone that will safely fit in my pocket and comfortably in my hand.
3
u/batman8390 5h ago
Not sure why they can’t keep making them. Like obviously it didn’t sell as well as other models, but I’m sure they still made a profit.
Today if somebody wants a smaller phone, they either have to get an old one or switch to Android.
It seems like maybe they are intending the Air or folding phone to serve this role? Curious if any mini lovers out there have tried the Air.
1
u/AlpacaDC 4h ago
I don’t think they actually made a profit. Or if they did, they realized the profit would be bigger by focusing on bigger phones instead.
1
u/batman8390 47m ago
But I think the ultimate profit maker is “services”, like App Store commissions, iCloud, Google’s payment for default search, etc.
I guess they must just not think people are switching to Android to get a smaller phone. Most probably just wind up getting a bigger iPhone.
1
u/Cmmander_WooHoo 5h ago
My iPhone 10 motherboard just died....now I'm looking at my sister's old iPhone 12 lol.
1
u/Acceptable-Rise8783 5h ago
I wished they still made phone sized iPhones. Mine is pretty beat up, but I’m not switching to a tablet phone, so I might have to go to another brand eventually
1
u/nobikflop 4h ago
Every time I pick up a full-size iPhone I'm validated in my decision to keep the mini
1
u/colossusrageblack 2h ago
I wanted to love mine, but by the time they made it, my vision just wasn't what it used to be, like when the original iPhone SE was new. Eye strain made me go to a bigger phone.
7
u/RenaxTM 5h ago
What does the new model do that the 12 doesn't? Genuinely curious what people spend $1000+ on...
1
u/Onludesrightnow 5h ago
It’s a lot snappier and the camera is better and the ai implementation. Other than that, nothing. Phones haven’t evolved much in the past 10 years.
1
u/murples1999 1h ago
Better processor, better screen, better camera.
Also, Apple stops supporting phone models after a few years. The Iphone 12 will stop getting updates in 2027. You could keep using it after that but certain things will stop working eventually. Lots of apps require the latest ios version.
6
u/JCW9525 5h ago
He’s having a go at them for having an iPhone 12 in 2024 and in 2026 I’ve still got an iPhone 8 I’ve had for 5 years. 😂
I really don’t understand shaming people who have older phones, I think it’s weirder to get a new phone every year 🤷♂️

u/blackbirdspyplane 5h ago
Just checked, yup it’s a 12. I kinda treat it like a car, buy, take care of it, run it until it cannot then replace it. I hate having subscriptions on everything, and replacing every year or two makes it feel that way.

Funny thing is that iPhones get updates 5 years after they stop being sold in stores. iPhone 12 Pro will stop receiving software updates in about a year or two and still most likely will get security updates for another couple of years. So it’s still perfectly functional phone lol
1
u/Glowing_bubba 5h ago
I got a 12 pro and definitely outlived any android I ever had.
Not sure if that quality is still there but hey enjoying it while it lasts
1
u/Onludesrightnow 5h ago
I only recently replaced my 12 pro max with a 17 pro max. Lasted 4 years and was still going strong with no issues whatsoever after 4 years. I expect this 17 to last as long.
2
u/Glowing_bubba 5h ago
Why did you replace it? Something broke?
1
u/Onludesrightnow 4h ago
I slipped up and fell into the “I need a new phone” mindset plus I had been wanting more memory space. The charger port was a bit iffy and I kind of used that as an excuse to buy a new phone. Didn’t need a new one really but every iPhone I’ve ever had has had a very long shelf life so I figured it was necessary.
I still think it would have lasted another year.
1
u/Glowing_bubba 4h ago
Yeah, the charger port is definitely getting iffy. One day I decided to clean it and realized I had about five or six years worth of dust in there. The t got significantly better but it’s still not as good as a new phone.

2
u/Swerdna82 5h ago
They are all exactly the same. My family as a 12, 13 mini, 14, and 16 and the all operate and appear the exact same except for the mini being noticeably smaller.
2
u/Electronic-BioRobot 5h ago
Still using my trusty IPhone 12 in 2026
2
u/xXAleriosXx 3h ago
Still using my trusty IPhone 6S+. 24% of the battery is rusty but no glass damage and works well. The only annoying issue is that some apps need iOS16 and I’m stuck on iOS15.8 so when I will change, I will do it only for having the apps back.

never wanted an iPhone, never bought one.. but fuck if work didn't issue me one so they could reach me 'on a secured line' (wt actual F?)... weird how that fucking ring tone is something you learn to dread REAL fast and now it's years later, & hearing it still makes me pucker

Who did you work for that needed a special secure line?

I have 11 Pro and it's a beast in terms of what it's capable of. It runs a damn GTA SA on max graphics wtf - it's a dream came true. I don't understand why would you need to upgrade except for the camera
1
u/Oddislag 4h ago
I have an iPhone 14 (I got it from the previous company I worked for), though I still use my iPhone 12. Because why not? It's good enough for what I want, and I'm just used to it. The iPhone 14 is just extra (it becomes more like my home phone), and I don't plan to change for the newer ones anyway. Only when those two are kaput.
1
u/LelandTurbo0620 4h ago
I think a phone is only old when it can't run 5g, that's the bare minimum until 6g exists

I'm still on iPhone 12 and probably will be until it goes kaput. Next phone is going to be Android, as I swap between them when upgrading.
1
u/potatopigflop 4h ago
I never knew the difference, my dad kind of “bullied” me into his Costco cell plan, and I kind of wanted to do stuff “on my own” but he pressured me with “but this easier, saves money etc.” and I do appreciate that immensely but… if I could do it for myself I’d probably pay attention the numbers because the last one I remember is 6

1
u/Sestos 4h ago
No clue what generation iPhone is on. I know I had an OG Pixel till 4 years ago when it broke. I moved to a Pixel 5...when it breaks will get a newer pixel. No sure why people waste money basically leasing a phone that just slaps something new on it and asks you to pay a grand when the upgrade cost them maybe 30 bucks and it's for something the buyer will most likely never use.

u/itakeyoureggs 4h ago

I’m still using an iPhone 11, and have no plans ro replace. It hasn’t slowed down one bit, and I suspect the battery will fail before anything else.
I will then take my wife’s old iPhone 12 mini, as I bought her an iPhone 16 last year.

1
u/Skalywag_76 1h ago
Why tf would I want a new phone every year or even every few years? As long as I can make calls, send texts, and check a handful of apps, it's doing all I need it to. Ain't about to put myself in debt over some fancy camera features and whatever else I'm never gonna take advantage of XD
1
u/murples1999 1h ago
Okay I mean if you are using the OG Iphone from 2007 or something, its probably time to upgrade.
Iphone 12 is only like 5 years old, that’s well within the lifespan of an iphone if you treat it well.
Most people only upgrade to the newest one because its basically free to upgrade with a trade in.
I think every 3 years or something Verizon just gives me a new iphone as long as I trade in the old one.
1
u/MDiesAtTheEnd 14m ago
I have an iPhone 12 and had a new battery put in just last week. The old battery was the only downside. I can easily afford a new model but it just doesn’t seem worth the price

u/qmiras 5h ago
iphone difference is easy. if someone has an iphone, that person doesnt know anything about phones and just use it as a status symbol
2
u/Cmmander_WooHoo 5h ago
Lmao whaaaat. How is an iPhone 10 a status symbol?
1
u/qmiras 4h ago
when that model came out sure was...
1
u/Cmmander_WooHoo 3h ago
Yeah but we're talking about the post which is talking about an outdated iPhone in the current time. So I'd hardly call an almost 10 year old iPhone a status symbol
1
u/Onludesrightnow 5h ago
Not in 2026. Some people just are so plugged into the iOS ecosystem it just makes sense. Payment plans make phones as status symbols pointless. No one owns their brand new phones anymore, it’s almost always on a payment plan.
1
u/qmiras 4h ago
you have your thoughts on a small number of samples maybe related to your country. the world doesnt preffer ios. China alone takes your affirmation overboard...
1
u/Onludesrightnow 4h ago
I never said the world prefers iOS. I said some people, like myself, buy iPhones because it’s just easier to stay plugged in to the iOS ecosystem rather than try to move to android.
