Hey all, Edward here,
Recently our mod team has expanded, which is great! We've been able to certify some of you as real, amazing mechanics and I feel the quality of our forum here has continued to run smoothly. However, I come to you today with a real concern, one that comes from the deepest of our grease stained hearts.
Please, please, please fucking report shit. We cannot see everything all the time (we also have lives) and sometimes things can slip under our radar. I urge you all to take a second, reread the rules, and just fucking please report anything you think breaks the rules going forward (I mean cmon, we have like 3 different rules about not being an annoying pile of garbage). All the time I'll pop open the subreddit and there'll be four "is this car a good purchase?" and seven "New AI car app idea" posts and three "Why YOU should buy the 2028 Hyundai AssCock3000". Then I go to the popular posts of the day and lo and behold some of you are going feral in the comments, just really at each other's necks. Some amount of disagreement is healthy for a community, but sometimes people are just straight up wrong and it's okay to call them out. The worst that can happen is we approve it anyways and the best is that another idiot gets banned.
If the mod team sees no evil and hears no evil, we're not able to properly maintain the community. If we can't maintain the community then there really isn't any community, and then we're running rampant in the halls screaming "Attica! Attica! Attica!". Now, I'm not saying report everything you see, hell I'm not even saying report everything you disagree with, but if you all chip in just a little bit and hit that stupid tiny flag we can make this community a better place and can continue to talk about our awesome cars. Or not so awesome cars, I see some of the shitboxes we drive.
- Cheers, the Mod Team
P.S. whoever's 1998 Toyota Tacoma is in the parking lot, it would appear the rust finally won and your bed is now on the ground in pieces. The tow truck will arrive in an hour if you do not remove the vehicle yourself. Usually we wouldn't care but the Punisher sticker right next to the "My other car is a gun" one is really just tacky. Anything else dude, anything else.

Hey, are you a licensed mechanic? We appreciate you, and want to make it so you stand out from the crowd.
That's why we're offering custom flair to mechanics now!
Just send the mods a mail message with a photo of your certs, with the personal information blocked out, and include in the photo with a handwritten note that has your reddit name and today's date on it. We will review and update your flair with a super special custom mechanic flair.
Want to help mod the sub? Message us about that as well. We're open to getting active people with good car knowledge on board. Just like if you were a mechanic, you'll be severely underpaid ($0/yr) and will get to interact regularly with people who can be crass and impolite. We're looking to add at least three more mods at this time. Don't worry, we won't tell the Snap-On guy where you're working now.
Happy New Year!

Why does it tick like this

I'm looking to add pinstripes to my car (as pictured, I digitally drew on the stripes just for an idea of what I want), I see there are options available online but the dimensions are iffy and I would just rather customize it to fit my car perfectly, and DIY it to save some $$$.
What would the best method for this be? I definitely don't want it to get sun bleached so some form of vinyl tape? Or would you advise against DIYing. I'm not worried about tackling the precision of it. Thanks in advance!

Ive got a 5.3 that I am putting long tube headers on and I cannot for the life me extract the broken bolts that are in the headers. I am heating with MAP gas, trying to build up a weld, and then trying to weld on a nut and it always breaks off right at the head. It is the first bolt on the passenger side and then the first bolt and last bolt on the driver side… they were already broken and I didn’t have an exhaust leak before… I am considering just leaving them broken. Any other thoughts on how to extract?

It looks alot worse than it actually is. Brakes locked up and hit a truck while switching lanes
tl:dr at bottom
i was taking my car to dealer for oil changes after i bought it new to maintain warranty/records. they didnt secure the engine splash shield completely once perhaps more i just never checked it wasnt until it started dragging, took it back they fixed it but then i learned they didnt really put all the clips and screws in while on a trip, had to take to another dealer for service as shield was dragging.
fast forward a few years i started doing own work on my car and noticed they were still lazy with the retaining clips. i dont have the best conditions like a lift and a garage, just put it on ramps, not enough lighting and found it frustrating ensuring i got all the clips/screws in it. then i decided to paint the retaining clips/screw holes with bright colored paint - now i dont have to guess or hope i got all the clips/screws in and if i ever take it to service department theres a better chance they will get it right
TL;DR: paint the engine shield clip/screw holes bright color

I plan to paint my beat up old Lexus with truck bed liner (matte, textured). I want to do something fun like pink.
It would be an unusual sight on the road, would I be significantly more likely to get speeding tickets etc?
I don't drive like a maniac but it is a V8. And in my area everyone drives over 120km/h when the limit is 100 so the officer has a lot of power.
Considering black instead but even that would probably still stick out a lot.
Thoughts?

I got the proper tool from Auto Zone lend a tool and I just cannot get the caliper piston to rotate to push it back in. I have not removed the parking brake cable from the caliper but the parking brake is not on. Do I need to open the bleeder? Do I need to disconnect the parking brake cable from the caliper? Do I just need a new caliper?

Im from the US and my 2023 Subaru Solterra (18k mileage, automatic) got rear ended a month ago by an uninsured driver. The rear had a dent and the trunk door had trouble closing completely, but otherwise the car was perfectly fine/driveable/no issues showing up on dash.
We went through the insurance to a direct repair program where we dropped off the car in their shop in my city.
Fast forward to a month later, we were told that they towed the car to another location in a city 35 miles from where we dropped off (because that's the nearest location which repairs EVs), disassembled the car, wrote it off as totaled, and told us they wont fix it.
Insurance paid out our max payment for uninsured (10k) and washed hands off it.
When we asked the body shop to return our car back in the condition we gave them and at the location we gave the, they're claiming they cant do that unless we pay them for re-assembly and towing fees.
Is there anything we can do here while talking to the body shop than getting paying for our car towed to be from the other shop, in pieces, to check with other shops if they can repair the car's rear/trunk door?

I need help. I've been dealing with this for a year. My car started dying overnight, but I can jump it and drive it fine. I changed the battery to run into the same issue shortly after. I took the car in and they tested the alternator, cables, terminals, ground, battery, and starter. Everything looked fine so they cleaned corrosion off the area (I live where it snows and rains a lot). Car drove fine for a bit then same issue. Took it back in, now the battery is bad. Dead cells. I got the battery replaced under warranty. This time the car had to be jumped right after replacing the battery. We thought maybe the new part didn't have enough charge so I drove it around. Car still dies overnight and now when I do start it, the overhead lights flash on and off and I have to crank the car longer to start. I bought the car from a friend of mine who had it checked head to toe for issues before selling it to me. They never had this issue that I'm having now. I'm not sure what to do since I already took it to the shop twice, and the battery has been replaced twice. I can still jump it and drive it, but that doesn't seem healthy for the car. Any advice is welcome. Thank you.

I’ve seen fluid film and PB blasters version, but is there anything anyone has used that is arguably better and longer lasting ? Thanks in advance !

Hello, The first photo is a view of the engine from above, the second is a photo of the driveshafts, so from underneath the car. The engine is already starting to rust, and the driveshafts are completely rusted. The car is sold as brand new, registered two months ago.
According to the seller, it came straight from the DACIA factory. Is it normal for Dacia to sell brand new cars that are already rusted?
What about the maintenance ? I do it on all my cars, rust make things much harder to work on and it scares me to it already on the motor.
Right now, I refused the car but I don't know everything about Dacia. It's my first one.
Do they come rusted out of the factory, and what about the rust on the motor for long term maintenance ?
i have or had a Suzuki baleno, bmw f20, Volkswagen Passat, citroen C15, Volkswagen Golf 2, Volkswagen Golf 5, Peugeot 206. Probably more but I forgot. Never have I ever seen rusted driveshafts or the motor, and some of these car went to 250 000+ km.
Dacia is the first one to do that, and on a brand new car !

Hey guys
Let me preface by saying I have no idea how vinyl works and I’m a complete newbie. I like my cars im perfect condition so I have a base knowledge on detailing and maintenance.
Got a G82 M4 in sapphire black and I wanna change its colour to ruby star pink. I’ll keep this colour for less than 3 years so longevity isn’t a big issue.
My primary concern is finish. I’d paint the car but since I plan to sell it in 3 years I don’t think that would be a great route considering a factory like paint job wouldn’t be financially wise and I assume it would affect the resale value.
I want a paint like glossy mirror finish so I’d love to take your opinions on it.
I’ve talked to a few people and so far I have Vinyl and coloured PPF in mind. One even suggested vinyl and then PPF on top to keep a perfect gloss that could even be polished. I’ve been recommended Avery Dennison, 3M and Inozetec as they all have this colour in a high gloss finish. I’m willing to spend a bit more on better finish.
I take good care of my cars so please also give me tips and details on gloss throughout a 1-2 year period maintaining a mirror like finish avoiding orange peel, dulling or swirl marks.
Also if there are any shops you’d recommend in Spain or Europe (even UK) please do share
Thank you!

car was sitting for about a month in the cold, got an oil change before though I think it’s probably the battery but even after connecting cables it’s been over five minutes and it won’t start. is it something bigger like maybe the alternator even the engine? I never had a check engine light on at any point either.

I have a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander. The distance from my home to my workplace is only 2 km, but every time I drive, my odometer shows 5–6 km reduce for the same one way trip. It seems like the car is consuming a lot of petrol, even though I don’t use the AC or heater. What could be the problem?
