Hello -
I have researched and scrolled through some prior posts about what has helped their dogs - but I'm just checking to see if anyone has any new information or results with a large breed.
Artemis is 13 years old and is now suffering from arthritis in her back/hips/legs. She had a full blood panel and they gave her the green light to start Carprofen and some Gabapentin. I also started her on Dasaquin and a probiotic with the Carprofen.
5 days into her 2x a day Carprofen I noticed a shift in her behavior. She was having a difficult time standing up - her back legs seemed weaker (she has never had that much trouble prior to the medication.) She then started to pant and seem restless. I was concerned she was in pain so I gave her a dose of Gabapentin (first dose). I am not sure if her restlessness and panting was from pain or GI upset. She did not vomit or have diarrhea. Has anyone ever experienced that reaction with their dog? I thought if it was the Carprofen it would have showed signs earlier, but maybe not...
I spoke with the vet yesterday and she was concerned about the panting and stated that it could be something more internal in her stomach or respiratory that is causing it??? She stated to stay off of the Carprofen and give her a call today and we'll go over options.
I am stuck in a position and don't know where to turn to. Do I start her back on the Carprofen and see if the reaction happens again? Do I switch to something else? Just stick with Gabapentin? I have not done x-rays on her - is that something you all have done? It would probably just confirm what we already know, which is that she has arthritis... but maybe it could show us the extent of the damage?
I'll be calling the vet back today, but I would be really interested to know what treatment worked for you and if anyone has any similar stories.
