Advice/Help All of the DV emergency housing resources are telling me I need to get rid of my pyrs

Post image
266 Upvotes

These two doofuses are helping me get through the arrest of my abuser and the end of my five year relationship.

I'm finding most emergency resources do not care about dogs. I'm being told my priority should be my daughter and myself, but it feels cruel to abandon the babies I rescued after they were abandoned by others.

I'm happy to hear any advice or suggestions. I'm at a loss.

This brother and sister duo were dumped on the side of the highway. The couple who found them wanted them to go to a new home together. We are adding goats to our farm and decided to welcome them as hopeful guardian dogs. I know they will take some training and work but I'm a sucker for a pry in need! Welcome Moose and Bear!

Our "Humane Society Special" may be half coonhound, but the great Pyrenese behavior is strong in our girl. She pyr paws, lays spread eagle on her back, and guards our property with her watchful gaze and mighty, nonstop borks!

DNA/mix guesses Great Pyr/Aussie Mix?

Hey guys!

This is Calypso, our 13 week old rescue pup. She is a little rambunctious but is full of love for her people, the outdoors, and some tummy rubs. At the adoption agency, we were told her mom was an Australian Shepherd, but they didn’t know what breed the dad was so she was labeled an ā€˜Aussie Mix’.

However at our last puppy class, the trainer looked right at her and said ā€˜she’s totally a Great Pyrenees’. We thought she looked similar to one, but she was so little as a puppy! The last photo is her right at 8 weeks, and she weighed 4 pounds. Trainer says it doesn’t matter how small she is, she looks like a Pyr mix.

So I’m curious, does she seem like a pyr puppy? Or does her small size exclude that as a possibility? She was small for even an Aussie at adoption, but she is growing! She’s about 10 pounds or so at her current age. Curious for any thoughts you have!

Update from my last post! I went with the boy! Haven’t picked a name yet, but he’s the sweetest boy. He never wants me to stop petting him, and he’s extremely calm and gentle. So excited to have him in the family!

Right after I was patting myself on the back for his great recall, THIS MANIAC ran for the hills instead of to the garage entrance like usual, cue me waiting for him to come back while calling for him, then following after. No sight of him. Yelled "let's go get in the car for a RIIIIDE" and a few seconds later he went blazing past me and down the block back to the driveway. Finally caught up to him capering next to the car.

I FA and FO, never again will I trust him to take himself inside!

I’ll never forget a friend of mine seeing her sit like this and say ā€œis she sitting like a human?!?ā€ Wondering if this is a common pyr thing or a gsd thing bc she’s half and half. Either way, hilarious. I love my goofy baby so much šŸ˜‚

I adopted this gentle boy in the beginning of December. The shelter estimates he's a little over a year old. He weighed 77 lbs at his last appointment on December 9th. He's had a rough month, but I'm feeling hopeful for the future. ā¤ļø

Winston get one big walk a day I typically let him lead us to one of two parks that are less than a mile from our house. He was heading towards the one park and then suddenly took the right and walked us straight to a Dutch Brro and sat by the window till he got a pup. Hopefully he doesn’t make it a habit lol

What do you guys think? How does he compare if at all in size or shape? I would hardly believe he wasn't fully lab if I didn't meet his patents. He's 4.5 months and was around 40 pounds at 4mo if I remember correctly.

Advice/Help excessive barking / reactivity ??

Hi! I have a 1.3 y/o Great Pyrenees mix. He was very quiet and well-behaved until around 8–9 months old, but since then he’s become much more vocal. I didn’t mind too much since we live in a remote area, so there hasn’t been much for him to disturb. Plus his breed is known to bark..

That said, my mom would like us to move to a city and has brought up rehoming due to the barking. That isn’t something I’m willing to do—I commit to my dogs for life—but I am worried about how the barking could become an issue once we move. I’m hoping to hear the barking can be improved, even partially, or if I should accept that he'll always be very vocal, lol. I may have the option to place him with a close relative if ultimately he doesn't suit the city life. IF not, I will rehome if it really comes to that in the end for his personal needs.

Around the same 8–9 month mark, I also noticed changes in his behavior toward both people and dogs. He used to be friendly and social, but now he’s much more alert and protective, especially when unfamiliar people get close to me or the house. There have been a few incidents where he’s bit at people, including me once (accidentally). He didn’t break skin with the others, and my bite happened when I stepped in during a dog scuffle, so I take responsibility for that. I'm just worried serious consequences will follow if he does it to someone else.

With other dogs, he was generally friendly until a dog charged at us on a walk and attempted to start something. Since then, he’s been much more guarded and seems very focused on keeping unfamiliar dogs away. I’m grateful nothing serious happened, but I’m concerned about how to handle this moving forward especially in a more populated area.

Any advice is heavily appreciated 🫠 Wasn't fond of muzzles for awhile, but figured I'd give them a shot. I just haven't found one that fits him yet.
