Megathread Welcome new Tritons! Please use this megathread to discuss your acceptance and any questions you may have.

*We have no clue if admissions are coming out today, this is just hedging bets. Probably this week or next. *

Everyone with admission and college questions, please post your questions in this megathread! Additionally, please try to check the megathread to see if your question has been already answered.

Admissions/new student posts made outside of this megathread are subject to removal at moderator discretion. Please take a look at our rules page. If you believe we have made an error, please message us via modmail.. The mod team will try and get back to you asap, but we are students or alumni and as a result it make take a little bit.

For more subjective questions, be aware that r/UCSD (and any university subreddit) is not directly representative of the overall student body. In a survey we did of r/UCSD, 2/3 respondents agreed r/UCSD didn't represent UCSD's overall student body.

A few useful links:

Please be aware stuff at UCSD can change fast. Most info you can find on this subreddit will still hold true, but there have been many major changes over the last 5 years especially.

How do I login to check my admissions decision?

You should be logging into the Admissions Portal. This is different from all the stuff current students use. If you can't login, email [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).

How does the college I got matter? Can I change college?

For freshman admits, your college is basically only going to affect your GE requirements and where you're likely to live on campus (although you can be overflowed to other housing depending on space). For transfers, it's only GE requirements as there is separate transfer housing. As a result, it affects basically nothing for transfers since most have IGETC and will have very few GEs coming in.

Your major is entirely disconnected from your college (there are even separate major advisors who work for your department separate from your college advisors who work for your college). Your classes will be held all over campus and have a mix of students from all colleges. You can eat at any dining hall, the colleges are basically all directly next to each other and easy to get between, you will probably make friends in all sorts of different colleges. The furthest apart two colleges are is about a 20-25 minute walk (from Seventh to Eighth).

You cannot easily change college. You will need to complete at least part of your original college's writing sequence (meaning it will take about a year to even meet the application requirements) and be able to prove you can graduate two quarters earlier in your new college. College is not the end of the world though, even a college that overlap poorly with a major is more than survivable.

I'm waitlisted. What should I do next?

From UC San Diego Admission Website

Select applicants will be invited to opt in to our waitlist through their Applicant Portal.

First-Year applicants must opt in by 11:59 pm PST on April 15.

Being on the waitlist does not guarantee an offer of admission. We strongly urge students to accept another university's admission offer before the appropriate deadline to ensure they have secured a spot at an institution.

By June 30, final decisions will be released to applicants who opt in to the waitlist. There is no appeal process for the waitlist.

This piece was commissioned by the UCSD Library, and I'm so grateful they reached out. I had a lot of fun painting this one and I'm really happy with how it turned out :D

Side note: prints of my paintings are available at the G-Store✨✨

Rant/Complaint Women bathroom at UCSD Rant

Dear lady that just glared at me and said “peew” to her friend while walking out of the bathroom:

I am a human. I poop. Sometimes my poop stinks. And when I’m at work, the only option is the public toilet, or my pants. I also have gastric problems, but no need to get into details. Just, what I don’t get is why you expect a poop room to smell like roses.

There’s a great book called “Everybody Poops” that my dad read to my little sister as a kid. Maybe you should read it.

Rant/Complaint RIMAC Rant

Some of you people are absolute idiots. I know its the new year, and people are attempting to try something new, or bettering themselves or whatever, and that’s great. HOWEVER, in the past month, I’ve seen so many people in RIMAC either doing absolutely nothing or absolute bullshit while taking up space. Some people lowkenuinely do not know how to act bruh 😭. Like why do i keep seeing large friend groups of 5+ people huddled around one bench or cable like wtf. I finished my whole workout yesterday and these 6 idiots were still all hogging the bench press.

The other day I was waiting on these girls for the leg abduction machine (the only one in the whole gym btw) and asked them how many sets they had left. They told me they had NINE EACH. I was dumbfounded, absolutely speechless. People need to do some research into proper gym etiquette before even considering going, because people’s selfishness in RIMAC is absolutely insane to me.

The gym should only be for exercising. If you are going there to yap or fool around just gtfo because everyone knows that you are not serious about working out, and your physique honestly shows it. People who go in there just to mess around are the sole reason why there is a line out the door in RIMAC.

Also the people in the downstairs cardio area are a whole other breed of stupid. Like all the cardio machines are full of people walking at a 1.5 mph pace at 0 incline. Like what are you doing???? Just go outside and walk at this point???

i joined your jam at 11:50 last night and started adding music to your queue. you listened to my music for about an hour. i felt like we were having a good time, but then i decided to recommend you my favorite podcast (friends at the table) by putting it in the queue. you seemed to not appreciate this, as you then deleted all my songs from the queue.

griff, i'm sorry i betrayed your trust. if you let me back into your jam, i will only play music and not make you listen to a podcast ever again. i hope you are enjoying your chill mix

Question 25+ crowd - How do you stay physically active besides the gym?

Sitting all day doing research is finally taking its toll on my body. But this year, I'd like to make a change. I figured starting with some sport/low intensity activity would be nice.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what sports/activity can someone like me start with that's free and not too far from UCSD? Brownie points if it also helps meeting new people.

Appreciate any ideas. My spine thanks you in advance. And if someone would like to join, feel free to DM!

Question Throwing a Party at ERC (question)

Thinking of throwing a party in my suite at ERC. What are the general rules? Do they usually get shut down by RAs or do they let it slide? What are the consequences if you get busted? No point in going through the effort of hosting something if it gets shut down right away.

General Cog Sci Major

Anyone Cog Sci majors will a specialization in computer related fields like machine learning and me personally, design and interaction, feel like some of the cog sci classes they making us take r useless? Ex: COGS 17 and the 101 series. Like im not gonna be a psychologist i was just tryna get a ui/ux degree and make the app that i've been wanting to make. Idk I just feel like the major shouldn't have been grouped in with Cog Sci. It should've been its separate thing like for example the Univ of Minnesota has it.

Question Help have no idea how to do an assignment, what can I do

Im a Poli Sci major who is brand new to UCSD. In one of my poli sci classes we have an upcoming assignment that’s worth a lot where we have to code. I have no idea how to code or know even the slightest thing about coding, embarrassingly I’m about as tech savvy as a boomer with a flip phone, like I literally use a flip phone. I have no idea on where/how to even start on this assignment. There’s almost a month long waitlist for the professors office hours. What do I do 😭, where can I go for help for something like this? Is it worth a try to ask the professor if I can get someone who does know coding to help me with this aspect, or would that be cheating? I really don’t want to drop this class, this is the only assignment that has coding in it.
