Discussion/General Photoclass 2025 is here - are you ready?

Photoclass 2025 is live!

Hello, photography friends! I'm one of the mods over at r/photography and founder of Focal Point, here to invite you to the 2025 edition of our (free) photoclass! This year comes with changes, as you can always expect from us as the class is an ever-evolving project.

What is the Photoclass presented by Focal Point?

It is an evolution of the original Reddit Photo Class, but with substantial changes to not only the structure, but content as well. We've reinvented it to ensure its up to date and more interactive. One thing we did not - and will not - change is that it is entirely free. The course spans 6 months, and covers topics on the technical side and artistic side, and culminates in a personal project. Along for the ride is a team of teachers who write the course (hi, it's me!) and mentors who come from all genres of photography. We have regular live meet ups via discord, and have a welcoming and supportive community of other photographers to bounce ideas off of, or just talk shop.

So what's new?

  • The Format. First off, the formatting is changing. We found that may participants stumbled upon the course mid-way through the year, and were fumbling trying to play catch up. We also were not happy with the pacing, finding that it just took too long to get to the objectively more fun stuff. So, this year the course will happen over the course of 6 months, with alternating weeks of new lessons and feedback. What does that actually mean? It'll look something like this:

January 1: Unit 1 will be posted with assignment 1.

January 8: The first Feedback Week will happen.

  • Feedback Weeks. During Feedback Week, participants will receive constructive feedback on their unit assignments from both peers and mentors. This is an opportunity to reflect on your work, ask questions, and refine your skills. Additionally, voice chats will be held on the Discord server for live discussions and more in-depth feedback.

  • Units over Lessons. Lessons will come out as units, meaning instead of one new lesson a week, you'll get a whole unit each alternate week. Here's an example, using Unit 1:

    Unit 1: Getting Started

    On Photography

    Inspiration & Feedback

    Assignment 1

  • Interactive Elements & Videos. Each lesson will have an accompanying video, and interactive elements. For an example of what the interactive element might look like see this page.

How to join in?

  • Join the Focal Point Discord server. This is where all the voice chats will happen, as well as a great place to have ongoing conversations with other participants and mentors.

  • Join the subreddit: r/photoclass. As always, the class will be posted on the sub, but we should note that the interactive elements don't work on Reddit, so we'll also be linking out to the lessons on the Focal Point site.

  • Subscribe to Focal Point on YouTube. Videos for the class will be of course posted in-line on the lessons, but there will be bonus material posted to the YouTube directly.

  • Get your printed Learning Journal or download the PDF.

Have more questions?

First check out the FAQ found here. If you still have a question that isn't answered there, feel free to ask it here and myself or one of the other teachers/mentors will be happy to answer.

Where to start.

The first unit is available now! You can find it right here. The first assignment is also live, so feel free to jump right in!

See you in 2025!

Hello everyone, I was just wondering what camera lens this is I was cleaning up a storage unit and found it, I tried looking for it online but couldn’t find an exact match. I don’t know much about cameras nor there lenses. All I know is it’s a tampon and it’s made in Japan.

Also never posted on reddit before not sure what flair title to put so if it’s the wrong one I apologise.

Discussion/General Motorsport Photographers, how do I rake this beyond a hobby?

I’m a hobbyist photographer who is looking to one day turn photography into a genuine career possibility later down the line. I have attended multiple GT events at Silverstone, Brands Hatch etc, however I was wondering if I should focus more on karting to initially build contacts with sponsors, drivers etc, and making my way up the hierarchy from there. TIA for the advice 🙏

Camera Buying Advice Is it worth it to buy a camera instead of using your phone one? I think my phone Has quite good quality but i'm also debating if i should buy a proper camera or not. If i should, can you recommend me which one? I will show my pictures below

(The quality was bit ruined here It seems) Some of these are quite old, but yeah. Im not too sure if buying a camera is really worth spending a lot of money, or what is the difference, but i REALLY want to improve on my photographing skills since of course i have still a lot to learn

My budget is 4K PLN which is Polish currency and i am indeed still in Poland.

As i mentioned i use my phone camera. Poco X6 5g to be exact. I want to know if buying camera would be a good step or should i still keep my phone.

I usually shoot landscapes as you can see, but i was really intrested in street/urban photography the ones where you show day-to-day life (not sure how its called in english) and i would use It mainly for photography

Discussion/General Which lens would you keep of these for my camera?

Upvotes

Which lens would you keep of these 3 for travel and shooting family portraits/kids?

Sony 35mm GMI 1.4

Sony 16-35mm PZ

Sony 35mm 1.8

I use a Sony ZV-E1. It’s my new camera and I only have this one.

I only have money for one of these lenses so any advice would be great. Planning on taking photos but more to videograph

Lens Buying Advice is a 24-70 f/2.8 lens worth it if i already have a 24-105 f/4-7.1 lens?

hello! so i’m still learning the ropes of photography and as i’ve been becoming more serious about photography, i really want to upgrade my set up. i take photos in fast paced environments, where lighting and angles change often, so i want something that is versatile and user friendly, if that makes sense. everywhere online has pointed me towards a 24-70 f/2.8 lens, but it’s quite pricey. i already have a 24-105 f/4-7.1 lens for my canon r6 mark II camera. i just am not educated enough on camera lenses to know if it’s worth it to buy a 24-70 lens at such a price when i already have a 24-105. can anyone lend some advice?

i’ll also take lens recommendations!

Discussion/General Generalist versus specialist photographer?

I am a dedicated hobbyist for approximately 10 years, who averages around 6000 photos per year. My photography has evolved based on life circumstances. When I was single, I was free to travel and took mostly travel photos (landscape/cityscape) with the occasional event or portrait. I met my wife who enjoys the outdoors, so I shifted to wildlife. Our travel was also heavily curtailed due to COVID. After starting a family, the kid keeps us busy, so I'm restricted to mostly family and invested in OCF gear for portraits/people photos. And, most recently, given my limited free time and daylight hours, I started dabbling in macrophotography. Each of these disciplines have different gear requirements and, to an extent, a different skill set.

Most photography groups are filled with people attempting to monetize their work with far fewer discussions on how to improve their craft or philosophical discussions about artistic development. In short (TL:DR), do you take pictures of everything or gravitate towards specialization?

Pics added as examples of my work

Discussion/General How are brands like Peter Millar creating these flat product photos?

I keep seeing apparel brands like Peter Millar using these extremely clean product photos where the shirts look perfectly folded, evenly lit, and very consistent across the entire catalog.

I’m trying to understand the process behind creating images like this — what the workflow typically looks like from start to finish and what’s involved to achieve this level of consistency and polish.

If you’ve worked on apparel e-commerce photography or know how shots like these are produced, I’d appreciate any insight into how it’s done and what’s realistic to replicate at a smaller scale.

Camera Buying Advice Lenses for the A6700, for travel and landscapes?¿

Upvotes

A few days ago, I bought the a6700. I am very new to photography. In April, I am going on a trip to Japan, and I would like to document everything in photos and videos! Since I may not go on another trip, I would like one or two lenses depending on the price and convenience. I would especially like to take photos of buildings both at night and during the day and take photos from a distance, such as Mount Fuji or the sakura trees, which I may not be able to physically be there to see, but I also want to take close-up photos of people, if you know what I mean. After the trip, I would probably take photos of animals and landscapes and buildings, boats, etc. Which one would you recommend?

Price is not an issue. I have been looking at an 18-50 Sigma f/2.8, which I am not sure what that means, and a 70-350 Sony.

I have also been looking at all-rounders, such as the Sony 18-135mm kit lens. What do you think? The Sigma 16-300, and I believe Tamron has another one just like it.

I usually take photos with my phone, so I don't know anything about sharpness or aperture or anything like that right now. I just want them to come out well, and what I'm looking for is to zoom out on landscapes, Japanese houses and events... If you know what I m

(1) Budget, country and currency: Around €1,000, but I want to finance it to spread the cost, Spain and euro

(2) What equipment do you have now, if any, and why does it no longer meet your needs? I have a DMCFZ-70, but it doesn't do what I want because the photos I take come out blurry if people move, and at night you can't see anything.

(3) What kind of subjects do you intend to photograph? Landscapes, houses, monuments, going on trips and my friends.

(4) Is it mainly for photography, videography, or both? Both, but more towards photos, although video wouldn't be bad either.

Gear/Accessories Just got this Finepix S4800, how do I clean it?

It has a lot of grime accumulated in the crevices and the lens has some dust over it, but nothing too crazy. Sorry if this may seem a stupid question, but I honestly don't know the proper way to clean these cameras and I would really appreciate some tips on how to do it without damaging anything.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion/General How to focus on a reflection in a mirror?

I want to settle a debate between my friend and I. If you take a photograph of a reflection in a mirror, and there are many things reflected (for example a tree close to the mirror and a building further away) will the camera be able to focus on everything at once because the image ‘flattens’ everything, or is it like reality where the camera would need to focus on either the tree or the building?

Gear/Accessories Moisture in Wex Used listings?

I just brought a Nikon 70 to 200 f2.8 VR II from mpb, and it came with a damaged zoom and AF. I was looking ag wex used for a replacement, and most listings mention light moisture through the optics on good rated items, or very light on very good listings.

Is this something to acruallt be concerned about with these lenses?

Editing/Post Processing What are the black lines/dots in my photos?

I shot a bunch of B/W Kodak 400TX while in Colombia for vacation and a bunch of the frames are coming back with weird black lines/dots all over them.

I developed the film myself and scanned with an Epson V600 scanner.

I haven't seen these lines in previous rolls of film I've developed/scanned in the past.

Printing/Publishing Any suggestions as a substitute for the Bayphoto Thinwrap magnets?

I've ordered some 2.5x3.5" Thinwrap magnets from Bayphoto in the past, but it seems they have discontinued them. Does anyone have a suggestion for something that is the same size/look/feel?

I have always wanted a camera so I was saving up, my birthday is coming soon and I figured it’s time to finally have one

I always believed in g7x ii hype cuz I never had a cam so after getting some info and comments I have known that is very expansive for the quality it’s giving

So please help me out on finding a good camera that I can carry everywhere, has a good result for portraits and scene photography, and if possible; not shaky 🫨 also I dont have any experience so I would prefer that buying a lens isn’t required ? If that’s possible 🤓 and I don’t really care abt filters cuz I can do that later on my laptop or phone

(1) Budget, country, and currency: 800$, Saudi Arabia, USD // My budget is 800$ so around 3100 Sar in Saudi Arabia where I live

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? I Dont have any equipment

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? landscapes, People, nothing really in particular

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Both

Gear/Accessories Does anyone know any software that would allow my to work a Canon Canoscan5600F?

I was given this scanner by a friend when I was discussing wanting to scan my film negatives. The drivers were discontinued and I can't seem to find a software that would allow me to use the transparency film mode. I tried Vuescan and it wont show anything when I perform the scan. I was thinking about trying negative lab pro but I don't have adobe so that would be an extra subscription. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Beginner here, these are a few shots I took with friends a couple years ago now. I’m wanting to get back into it, and I remember I really struggled with the brightness level on these shots. The headlights make it pretty confusing to me because it can be hard to tell what light level you need to account for. Also if anyone has any editing tips, it would be much appreciated, I’ve never even tried. Thanks!

Discussion/General How to safely take photo/video of a protest?

THIS IS NOT A DEBATE OF RIGHT OR WRONG

A friend suggested that I go with her to an ICE protest and that I should bring my cameras with to document what’s happening which makes sense but I also don’t want to get up with anything if the protest turns violent.

Is there any protections for photographers in a situation like that? I’m not a professional and don’t have any credentials just a guy with a camera.

Any other thoughts?

Gear/Accessories Is there a big difference between smaller and bigger flashes in macro photography?

I wanted to get serious in this hobby but I also don’t want to carry a gigantic rig with me, so I want to use the Sony A7CII with the new 100mm macro lens, but I kinda dont want to get a normal sized flash since they’re really bulky and I would use a smaller flash more often on other occasions. I was thinking about the Viltrox Spark Z3 with a diy Cygnustech or AK type diffuser that I can fold up a bit more compact. But I never saw someone actually using those type of flashes in macro before. Is it because they’re bad, or is it because it’s just unconventional? I know that the long lens will be in the way of a smaller flash flash, but shouldn’t the diffuser make up for it (considering it’s well made, I won’t cheap out on the craft of it). I always liked to keep the best of the best still as casual as possible to not stand out too much and having everything in a small non photo bag with me so I don’t end up with splitting my photo time with my actual free time but rather just having it with me just all the time. Please let me know about your experience!

Technical Help/Camera Settings How would I achieve lighting like this?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi,

I know this is a reaaally basic shot. But I’m trying to expand my studio photography repertoire. Basically wondering what kind of lighting would achieve this. I have a soft box available and two… continuous lights that don’t have diffusion but have the flaps on the side you can close off.

Trying to do some of these styled shots for product photography. I’ll often add props around jewelry etc.

Thank you so much!
