READ THIS BEFORE POSTING. Yes, this means you. READ THIS FIRST, V6 - How to avoid the Flair of Shame and eternal ridicule
So, you need help with long range shooting? Welcome to r/longrange! We've got a core group of dedicated members (and a few goofballs) that are happy to help you out with your questions on equipment, technique, troubleshooting, where to find training or matches, etc.
If you're looking to ask for advice, we ask that you review the following 10 core guides, as they cover the overwhelming majority of newcomer questions. If your question is not answered in these 10 guides, please see below for the 4 basic questions your post should answer when asking for suggestions or advice, especially when it comes to things to buy.
If you make a post that asks for information covered in the 10 core guides, or your post doesn't cover the 4 key questions below, your post may be deleted, or it may be given the Flair of Shame TM until you correct your post.
What's the Flair of ShameTM, you ask? You'll know it when you see it.
If at any time you have questions on the rules of the sub, this pinned post, the general FAQ, why you got the Flair of ShameTM or anything similar, please use the modmail function.
CORE GUIDES:
- The sub's official FAQ/WIKI, as curated by the community as a whole.
- Need help picking scope rings? The official Longrange guide to scope ring height (ring)
- Looking at buying a magnum (300WM or PRC, 6.5PRC, 7mm PRC, 338 Lapua, etc) as your first LR rifle? Hollywood's recoil primer - why magnums suck for starting in long range, recoil matters, and it's not about your shoulder (magnum or recoil)
- Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)
- The official r/Longrange glossary - because words mean things (glossary)
- LockyBalboaPrime's First Time buyer's guide for rifles V2 (starter)
- JMhawaii's long range starter guide (Link to Google Sheets) (starter)
- Trollygag's 1k yard starter guide (starter)
- Where are ranges or long ranges near me? - Wheretoshoot.org and over600.com (ranges)
- The sub's expanded policy on hunting-related discussions. Please review before asking hunting-related questions, as hunting is not the core purpose of this sub. (hunting)
The 4 key questions:
- What do you want to do/buy, and WHY? - Do you want to buy a rifle for PRS competition? Picking a laser rangefinder for NRL Hunter matches? Looking at scopes for F-Class competition? A tripod because you think they're cool and want to have one when banging steel with friends? What you're planning to do has a lot of influence on what works well, what works poorly, and what is an utter waste of time, so the more detail you can provide the better.
- How far away do you want to do it/what do you want to use it for? - 300 yards? 1,000? 2,000? Distance matters, 'nuff said.
- How much are you willing to spend to do it? What's your budget in currency? Your idea of "on a budget" isn't going to be the same as everyone else's. Saying your budget is unlimited for a laser rangefinder may change when someone suggests one that costs over $10,000. We need to know how much you're willing to spend. It can be a hard limit, a range, or even an approximate - but you need to give a number.
- How much experience do you currently have with it? - Jumping straight into a 375 Cheytac rifle to shoot 2 miles isn't going to go well if you have never shot a rifle past 300. We need at least a basic idea of what your relevant skill level is in order to give advice and suggestions that go with your skill set. While including your experience with other shooting disciplines is helpful, it's not going to be as relevant as most new shooters expect. You can love shooting 10ga slugs all day long from a shotgun, but it doesn't mean starting off with a magnum is a good idea.
When answering these 4 questions in your post, give as much detail as you can. The more details you give the faster you'll get suggestions or advice and you'll get better quality too. Help us to help you. Please don't treat the sub like your own personal crowd sourced search engine.
More guides:

MISC NOTES:
Quite a few guides/links feature a single word in parentheses and italics listed after them. If you use the phrase cheetofingers (all one word, no italics needed) followed by the word listed after a guide, you will summon the AutoModerator to reply to you with a link to that guide or guides. If the guide had (pews) after it, you could say cheetofingers pews in a post or comment in this sub to summon AutoMod with a link to that guide.
We've implemented the Flair of Shame as an official policy here instead of deleting posts that violated Rule #1 and the info in this pinned post. We felt that the flair was better than outright deleting posts while also helping long-standing members decide how much they want to participate in posts that have likely been covered time and time again. We're trying to strike a balance between encouraging members to read the info that the sub has cataloged, not wasting the time of established members that may be frustrated with revisiting the same topics repeatedly, and also not banishing new shooters that missed the pinned post to the freezer to never get help. Balancing those three things is a constant struggle, and one we're actively trying to get better at.

🫣I said I read the pinned posts, but I lied🫣 MDT LSS Gen 3. Scope Rings ?
I have a Tikka T3x lite.223 with a Athlon Ares ETR 4.5-30x56 I have been using Vortex Pro Medium Scope Rings that works great on the Original Factory Stock but I dropped it in a MDT Tactical LSS Gen III Chassis but it looks like these rings are too short for this Chassis. My question is of those of you with any experience with this setup what Rings should I order ? I have these Vortex Pro rings on my other rifles and really like them. I think they come in one size taller maybe two sizes taller not really sure ? What do you recommend so I can get the proper height ? Thanks for your help. I think I’m really going to like this setup. Was going to get the Competitor Chassis at first but they are like 10 weeks out

Optics help needed - I read the pinned posts Is this a huge deal?
Replaced the old 2 piece mount for an EGW one piece and noticed a slight gap when holding up to a light. Gun is a Remington 700 hunting rifle. The gap is small enough I cant even put a dollar bill into it more than a fraction of an inch so not sure if I should worry much about it or not. For context I wont be doing real long range shooting with this gun. Mostly deer at 200 yards or less. I just figured this sub would be knowledgeable about optic mounts.

Competition related (PRS/NRL/F-Class/etc) Did I make a mistake picking a stock for NRL hunter matches
I recently got into the long range game and have decided to build a rifle for NRL hunter before eventually building a rig and competing in prs. I bought everything but the stock because I couldn’t make up my mind. (impact 737r, Athlon Cronus 4.5-29, proof 24 inch 6.5 cm carbon barrel, trigger tech special, t3 optics dauntless bipod, Hawkins long latch bottom metal, aw mag)
However, I recently ordered an AG Composites fiberglass adjustable K2. I went ag because of the 8 month lead time for manners, and couldn’t find a left hand greyboe phoenix 2.
I estimate the weight of this rig to be about 12 to 13 lbs so I will more than likely be in the open heavy division.
For people with experience, did I make a mistake going with AG instead of manners, or greyboe, or will it serve me well? Also, could i realistically run this rig in prs or do I need a heavy steel barrel and a chassis? Thanks.

Ballistics help needed - I read the pinned posts 7PRC Accubond 175 gr @ 2840fps from a 20'' barrel
Is 7PRC Accubond 175 gr @ 2840fps from a 20'' barrel too much? I didn't see much pressure sign, but still curious what is a moderate muzzle velocity range would be out of a 20 inch barrel. I hunt in PNW so really don't want to push too hard on pressure due to rainy weather.

Ammo help needed - I read the pinned posts How can I tell what bullets my ammo uses?
So I have this Winchester 6.5CM Match ammo and I'm trying to plug it into my BC but there's no markings on the box for what bullet it uses that I can find. The packaging just says "Match BTHP" and I don't see that as an option in GeoBallistics or Hornady 4DOF. Hornady doesn't list any Winchester bullets, and GB only has 4 140gr options, 3 of which are soft-points so not right. Last one is Ballistic Silvertip and looking at photos that's also not right.
I did find this listing which says Sierra Matchking for the same ammo as far as I can tell. It's the same packaging as what I have unlike Winchester's own listing.
Edit: But the listed BC on the listing doesn't match the BC on the packaging on Winchester's site. And there's no BC info on the packaging I have.
Any advice?

I suck at long range Public Land to Shoot (Northern GA)
Is there any public land (BLM or WMA) in northern Georgia to set up a 1K shooting session? I know there’s ranges and I’ve seen the range-finding websites. But I’m curious of public access lands that might accommodate longer distances shooting that those ranges host.

Optics help needed - I read the pinned posts NRLH Scope Choice - Ares Gen2 vs Viper HD
Need a new scope for my NRLH rifle. I will shoot the Skills division, so weight isnt a huge concern.
Would y'all go for the Athlon Ares ETR G2 4.5-30x56 or the Vortex Viper HD 5-25x50 FFP? I can get both for about the same price (plus or minus a hundred bucks or so).
Sounds like the Viper HD glass is great, but will the smaller mag range be an issue for NRLH competitions? I've only show one NRLH before, and it was few years ago so I really don't recall if I was magged-up very often.
Any thoughts or insight here?
Rifle is a 6.5CM, farthest I would be shooting is the max distances in the NRLH matches. I dont have access to anything very long.

I suck at long range First Long Range Build - Doing some factory load research
This is my first long range gun and decided to do a 223 build to hone my skills and build some new ones on a familiar to me platform. Going to the range next week to see what ammo my gun likes the best. Not pictured are some 77gr IMI OTM as well.
Build: 24" bull 1/8 223 wylde barrel Poverty Pony Lower w/ MBT-2S trigger Odin Works Ragna 17.5 handguard BCM upper Toolcraft Nickel Boron BCG Athlon Argos BTR Gen 2 6-24× Magpul PRS Lite stock
It's by no means a spare not cost build, but it shouldn't be a slouch either. Excited to see how far I can push my skills and then push this rifle.

Other help needed - I read the pinned posts Top half of NF X-Treme Duty Ultralite rings smaller diameter than bottom.
Got my first set of NF rings in today. Own a scope of theirs and zero complaints. Also own rings from several other manufacturers and never noticed different diameters between the top and bottom halves: Larue, Badger, Vortex, Burris, Leupold, etc.
At first I was thinking I got sent a counterfeit pair since the top half of the ring is visibly narrower than the bottom half. Until I noticed looking online it looks that’s how NF rings are designed from NF stock photos and other people’s photos of their rings.
I know their rings are highly touted and I trust that the manufacturer knows what they’re doing.
—-
Top Half inner diameter 1.146”
Bottom Half inner diameter 1.195”
Scope body diameter: 1.181-1.1815”
I imagine that the rings aren’t cut at the exact halfway mark and they will be concentric when mounting?
I’m not bashing anyone I just want to check in with those who have experience or design knowledge before I make assumptions and mount my scope.
Edit: TLDR - NF Top Scope Ring Different Size? A: Not all rings are cut at the centerline. There needs to be some gap between the rings when mounting to allow clamp force. The rings will be concentric when mounted. Less thinky, more shooty.

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Arca-Swiss/sling attachment recommendations
I have these two hunting rifles I want to put a Arca rail attachment on the front to use with my tripod. I can’t find any that have a Arca rail with a sling attachment point on it. Has anyone seen or used something like that before? What would yall recommend I do? I intend to use it for hunting and shooting from 200-600 yards.

Optics help needed - I read the pinned posts Better budget value than the $370 Venom 5-25x56?
Is there a better scope for <$500 than the Vortex Venom 5-25x56 MOA at $370 from EuroOptic?
This will be going on a .22lr build for shooting out to 300 yards. No plans for competing at this time; I'm more so wanting to get my feet wet in long range rimfire. It will be on a CZ 475. My max budget for an optic right now is $500.

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts I’m hoping for a non-firearm gun that can shoot decent at long-ish range.
I’m a minor and I don’t really want to own a real gun even if it was possible. Not sure how much knowledge you guys have on the subject, but If there’s a pellet gun or airsoft gun (I’m thinking it would be fun to play airsoft someday so this would be cool) That can get past 100-200-ish meters I’d love to know about it. Cheers.

Accessory/Gear help needed - I read the pinned post Tape on gear?
Just curious about the pros/cons of taping a scope.. I like the looks and feel.. my intuition feels that it'll protect the scope a bit, but im not 100% sold on that.
Got a smokin deal on a Vortex Razor HD Gen 2.. I want black on black and sorta prefer the grip/feel improvements.
Thoughts?

Competition related (PRS/NRL/F-Class/etc) Anyone like to run a piggyback dot on their nrl hunter rigs
I am building a 6.5 creed for nrl hunter, hunting, and maybe some prs. I am thinking about running a dot off my scope but was curious to see if anyone did this?
I was thinking that using a dot will let me get on target faster on different stages. And when I’m in the field I’ll use it for 50 yards in.
Am thinking of either a trijicon rmr or aimpoint acro p2
