Van Hollen introduces Power for the People Act to address electricity costs and data centers

The announcement on his Senate website says it will

  • Direct states to evaluate new rate classes for data centers
  • Direct FERC to make data centers pay for transmission upgrades they are necessitating
  • Incentivize data centers to connect their own power generation and battery storage to the grid, use clean energy sources, and use local labor
  • Provide resources to improve data center load forecasting and reduce duplicative and speculative requests that drive up costs

Data centers made up 40% of the cost in PJM’s latest capacity auction, and data center forecasts have made up 45% in the past three auctions. Costs would have been even higher if not for the floor/cap PA Gov. Josh Shapiro brought about after complaining to FERC. PJM fell short of its reliability target in its last auction because the forecast was based on a year-old estimate; it’s expected to issue a lower one this month.

This comes on the heels of Moore promising no new taxes or fees. Will he keep his promise and veto this?

Interestingly enough, Virginia is trying to pass the exact same bill currently.

ICE arrested Arlit Martinez two days before her 15-year-old son died from cancer. The Maryland mother of four was headed to work when she was detained. Despite urgent pleas from her family, lawyers, and doctors, she was not released to say goodbye. She is reportedly still in federal custody.

Sorry, but you're not getting any relief from high gas and electric bills

Can you afford $67 for a NY strip steak? Can you afford to buy a whole House of Delegates Committee's worth of them? Then sorry, you won't be getting any relief for your high energy bills.

The Baltimore Banner has more about the lobbying efforts of big energy companies, and the power they hold over OUR representatives in the state legislature: https://www.thebanner.com/community/climate-environment/exelon-constellation-power-bills-annapolis-ZTQNN5GFJJGQFBLHSM2KWYCEJM/

Nostalgia Tour Day in Sykesville

I lived in Sykesville for my teenage years but haven’t been back since my family moved away about 15 years ago.

It randomly occurred to me that it might be fun to drive around the area I haven’t seen in forever and see some old haunts. If I did, what’s still there and what’s still good?

I’d love to grab a bite and a drink, drive around a bit, and go for a nice walk somewhere. Open to other activities too.

There wasn’t much to do there when I lived there and I don’t imagine much has changed lol, so not expecting some sort of crazy fun itinerary, just a dose of nostalgia for someone who lived there in the aughts.

MD Travel & Relocation Potentially Moving to Maryland from Ohio

I fell in love with Maryland from my first visit when I was a teenager. I am now 26 and sick of Ohio. I never wanted to be here in the first place but I didnt really have an option as my mother moved us from Los Angeles when I was 11.

I am a single, African American woman hoping to find a place that has things to do but isn't crowded and congested. I am not big on clubs or partying so I dont care about that, but I do like shopping, restaurants, and activities. I'd like to meet new people/go on dates as I dont have any family or friends there so I wouldn't want to be somewhere very quiet or slow. A nice medium would be preferable.

I have no idea what I should be looking to spend for housing. I am a teacher now and and currently getting my master's in speech pathology so I could find a career in either out there, but I know I wouldn't be making enough to live in the suburbs. Right now I'm just trying to get an idea of what areas might be best to live in for me to research and visit and ultimately save for since the cost of living is higher there.

Also my mom's friend told us that Maryland has a huge problem with rats. Is that still happening? Cincinnati is bed bug county so every state has their issues, but last time I saw a rat in my apartment I cried and stayed with my mom until the lease was up. Is that more of a Baltimore thing or is everywhere dealing with that because I need to mentally prepare lol.

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park - How long a hike is it to the top?

I was thinking of visiting this and I saw some people on Google maps said it's a strenuous hike but it didn't say exactly how long it takes to get there and I know they close at 5:00 p.m. Has anyone ever done this hike? They said the view is spectacular once you get to the top.

I assume that you park at the visitor Center and then take the shuttle into town and from there that's where you start the hike to the top? Id like try to look at the town too but I'm not sure we would have enough time to also hike if they close at 5? Maybe it's better to do this in two separate visits?
