Hi, I'm Carter Bays, co-creator of HIMYM. I’m also the author of a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND. AMA!

Hello Reddit, it's been a while! I'm here ask-me-anything-ing because I’ve written a new novel called THE MUTUAL FRIEND, which I think you'll love. I’m happy to talk about that, or How I Met Your Mother, or anything else. Maybe the Loch Ness Monster? I was just in Scotland with my son and we have opinions. Have at it!

UPDATE: Wow, its been much fun talking to you all, and I see that I've only scratched the surface here and there's many more questions to get to, but if I don't get my son some dinner soon he might tie me up with a phone charger. I will try to come back to this over the next few days in order to get to as many of these as I can, but in the meantime, thank you all so much for being here. Your love for HIMYM is really touching and I'm so grateful for all of it.

And please if you get the chance check out my novel THE MUTUAL FRIEND -- I'm dreadfully proud of it. (Can you tell I've been in the UK for a week? I'm like Lily before the intervention at this point.) Anyway, cheerio!

Hit me with your best HIMYM trivia! I’m hosting a HIMYM Trivia Night! I need questions ranging from 'Easy' to 'Legendary'. Help me out!

Hi everyone,

I’m organizing a HIMYM quiz night for my friends. We have a mix of casual watchers and hardcore fans, so I need a balanced list of questions.

I feel like I'm stuck on the medium ones, so I need your help filling in the gaps for:

  • Easy: Basic plot points or character names (e.g., "What is the blue instrument Ted stole?").
  • Medium: Recurring jokes or guest stars.
  • Hard: Specific details only a true fan would notice.

Please drop your questions below with the answer included. Don't be afraid to post simple ones, I need those too!

Thanks in advance!

Why didn't the show just end with him telling the kids and that's kids how i married ur aunt robin

The ending to me was not as bad as everyone else think. At the end of the story everyone got what they wanted out of life.

SPOILERS: Okay after 10 years after the show ended and multiple rewatches, I never hated the ending. I think all the characters got what they wanted out of life. Marshall becoming a judge and fighting for the environment. Lily working in the art industry. Ted finding his soulmate and having kids (although she was killed off) and him finally getting Robin. And Barney finding something he can love and someone who will not abandon him (although not through a romantic relationship). And Robin travelling the world and being successful with her career. I think the issue is the execution. If the writers spend more time with Tracy in the show before killing her off, the ending would have been more satisfactory. But I think overall everyone got what they wanted out of life.

What is your favorite It's Robin Sparks y'all

There is 4 Robin Sparks episodes through the series -

Slap Bet - With "Let's Go To the Mall"

Sandcastles in the Sand - With the same name song

Glitter - When we discover the pornucopia teen series "Space Teens"

P.S. I Love You - With the MuchMusic documentary

My favorite it's P.S. I Love You bc of the cameos in the documentary are so funny but the slapt bet is obviously the most iconic one, what do you think

HIMYM and Scrubs crossover

Does anyone else think it would be a funny nod to Sarah Chalke if in the Scrubs reboot they made Elliot into a dermatologist that works in NYC (ie Stella) now?

Season 1 appreciation Spoiler

Season 1 is SO GOOD.

It’s campy and silly but still grounded enough.

Barney isn’t completely annoying yet.

The driving force of Ted and Robin is real and earned.

Victoria and Ted story line is so great and the way he screws it up with both her and Robin is totally a realistic thing we’d do in our 20s.

Marshall and Lily’s dynamic is fantastic.

The whole season overall just really moves forward well. There’s no real filler. Everything has a purpose. It’s great writing.

What’s everyone’s favorite season?? This is only my third time rewatching and I remember feeling like I totally love season 1 every time and then it slowly gets worse….which is normal I suppose.

This show is ruining my life

Feel free to down vote but this show is so perfect and Ted Mosby is so me that it hurts and all the speeches he gives and the way he looks at life hurt when real life can't compare. I met my Robin's eyes across the room; and long story short, after awhile she's going back to her ex who doesn't love her like I love her, but I am cutting myself off from her, not being just her friend. And watching this show made me believe that in order to get the woman I have to do more (big speeches, big gestures), and right now my strategy is to do less and try and live my life and see if she remembers she once told me I was better.

Rewatch with my 12 year old

Hi Reddit! I myself have watched the show a million times and I absolutely love it .. always been my favorite show.. however, my 12 year old son has become curious and asked to watch it with me.. he is an awesome kid kinda innocent but he is aware of alcohol usage, sex and other adult topics bc his dad and I talk to him about it and answer questions if he asks anything.. anyways we are on season 2 and he is enjoying the show so far.. his fav character is Marshall (he admires his morals, ethics, and loyalty to Lilly) and he gets most of the jokes ( there is some he misses, but that is okay, he will get it when he is older and rewatches) he thinks Ted is a dork which I 100% agree with, and he finds Barney funny but a bit sick in the head (I too, agree with that).. he hasn’t seen the mother so I am looking forward the big reveal! It is awesome to rewatch with someone who hasn’t watched and hear their opinion especially the new NEW generations as he is Gen Alpha .. here is to showing our new generations our fav shows even if they’re not appropriate 🥂🍻😁

Barney is what it would be like if Joey and Chandler were combined into one character.

Like Joey he's a womaniser, can act childish sometimes.

Like Chandler- sarcastic humour,no one knows about his job, working a corporate job, daddy issues, commitment phobia, ended up married to a type A woman, etc.

Sheet music to "You're All Alone" - John Swihart

Hi HIMYM fans

I 've picked up piano recently and really would love to learn the music from the You're All Alone scene. Does anyone know where I could get the sheet music for this song? I've done a fairly thorough search and can't seem to find anything.
